The spirited action at Washington's practice Saturday didn't just make an impression on some fans and former players.

It also helped convince Lakes High WR Jamaal Kearse to become the latest player to commit to the Huskies.

Kearse just a few minutes ago confirmed a Scout.com report that he has committed to UW, saying he did so earlier today.

And Kearse said a major factor was watching Saturday's practice and seeing the energetic atmosphere around the team.

"That played a lot into it,'' he said. "I loved the practice, the intensity in the practice. They have time to play around but when they got the scrimmage going it was all serious and everybody was competitive.''

The 6-2, 205-pound Kearse is the younger brother of UW WR Jermaine Kearse, who will be a sophomore next fall for the Huskies. But Jamaal Kearse said joining his brother was not the main factor in his decision.

"It was more just my personal choice,'' he said. "I just liked the school, the environment, everything around the program was just more why I chose to go there.''

Kearse, given a four-star rating by Scout and ranked as the No. 27 WR in the country, also had offers from Washington State and Vanderbilt and said there's a chance he may still take a trip or two. But he said "for the most part, I'm going to stay committed.''

It didn't hurt that two other Lakes High teammates, LB Darius Waters and DT Sione Potoae have already committed. Kearse becomes the seventh player to commit to UW for the Class of 2010, and the sixth from in-state, already four more than Washington had in its entire Class of 2009. He's also the second in two days joining O'Dea High OL Ben Riva, who committed on Monday.

Lakes High coach Dave Miller said Kearse approached him this afternoon saying he wanted to commit, so Kearse picked up the phone and called UW coach Steve Sarkisian.

"He told me he was ready and I asked if he was 100 percent ready and he said he was,'' Miller said.

Miller, who also coached Reggie Williams in high school, said he thinks Jamaal Kearse has "NFL potential.''

Miller noted that Jamaal is bigger than his brother, who is listed at 6-1, 180, and said "Jermaine is a little more polished at this point but Jamaal probably has a little more physicality. .. He's very athletic and has NFL potential, no question, like Jermaine does.''

Asked how he compares with his brother, Jamaal said "he's got more speed. I'm more of a possession receiver, he's more of a play-maker, I guess you could say. We are both trying to make plays but he's got the speed and the quickness, I've got the aggression.''

Miller said he also thinks Jamaal Kearse could play safety at UW if needed, though for now the plan is that he would be a WR.

Miller said he's not sure he's had three players commit to the same school, especially this early, and called it "pretty amazing. But I think Jamaal saw the work ethic at practice going on, similar to what we do at practice as far as getting better every day with intensity, and he knows that's what is needed to get success whether it's next year or the year after and once he saw that at practice, he knew the program was going in the right direction and he was excited about that.''
