Comparing secondary violations

When stories the last few weeks surfaced about Washington's secondary violations, a much-asked question was --- how many secondary violations are there in the Pac-10 each year?

I finally got some answers after getting a call today from Ron Barker, the conference's associate commissioner for governance and enforcement.

His report? There were 186 secondary violations by all Pac-10 schools in all sports in 2008, and 42 in football.

The Pac-10 won't provide a breakdown by school at the request of the schools. Schools typically only acknowledge violations when they become public, and the Pac-10 typically only acknowledges those that have become public, as well.

Assuming no one school really goes much more overboard than any of the others, however, that means each school committed about 19 secondary violations in all sports and about four in football.

"Every school has these, I think that's accurate to say,'' Barker said.

Barker said each of the numbers for 2008 are about average of late.

"We've averaged anywhere from 155 on the lower end to 210-220 on the higher end,'' he said.

Barker said football and men's basketball tend to have more secondary violations than other sports. But there are reasons for that above coaches of those two sports committing more violations --- there are simply more players in football and more potential for violations, and there is also more exposure on football and men's basketball programs than other sports.
