Another round. ...
Q: I see UW doesn't have a coach with the title of recruiting coordinator. Who is going to handle it? Isn't it against NCAA rules for someone other than a coach to handle it?
A: You are correct that none of the 10 coaches --- Steve Sarkisian and the nine assistants --- has the title recruiting coordinator. And only a coach can have that title, so apparently no one will. However, it's not as if no one will handle the duties normally associated with a recruiting coordinator. Jared Blank, who has been named as the director of player personnel, will handle much of the administrative duties normally associated with a recruiting coordinator. While he has a title new to UW, he essentially is taking the place of Nicole Morry, who was an external relations director in the department last year and did a lot of administrative stuff related to recruiting. UW has also retained Matt Peterson, who held a similar job last year and is now officially a program coordinator for recruiting. Sarkisian will apparently head up the personnel aspects of recruiting from a coaching standpoint.
Q: Any salary details for Blank and Dennis Slutak, who is the new director of football operations
A: Slutak will make $120,000 a year, Blank will make $70,000 a year. Slutak has been given the title "Assistant Athletic Director for Football Operations'' and as such, will have oversight of the day-to-day details of the football program.
Q: Is Sarkisian considering moving Jake Locker to another position?
A: Despite what seems to be pretty definitive statements from all involved that Locker will remain at quarterback, I continue to get this question, including again this morning. No offense to those who ask --- as far as I can tell, you are all well-meaning, devoted Husky fans --- but what are you thinking? Is there really a significant faction of people who think the Huskies would be better off with Locker not playing quarterback? For starters, who plays QB if Locker this doesn't? Again, no offense to Ronnie Fouch --- he was thrown into an impossible situation this year --- but I can't imagine anyone really thought the Huskies were better off with Fouch at QB this year than they were in the games that Locker played. Sure, Locker needs some improvement in his passing. And yeah, he hasn't lived up yet to the immense hype --- though to be fair, no one could have. But in what was the only game against a good team that UW had a shot at winning this year --- BYU --- Locker was the QB, and as big a reason as any that the Huskies were able to stay in that game to the end. Otherwise, it's pretty hard to judge how he played this year since he was still ailing against Oregon, and also got hurt against Oklahoma and Stanford (and as an aside, I think Tyrone Willingham did a disservice to Locker by not being more open about his hamstring injury and making it clear that he wasn't 100 percent in that game, leaving a lot of people to just think Locker played bad that day). Also, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of examples of highly-talented QBs who took a few years to hit their stride. I imagine had the internet been the force in 1999 that it is now that there would have been all kinds of people questioning whether Marques Tuiasosopo should stay at QB. I remember getting e-mails his first two years that UW was misusing him and should move him to another spot. By the time he was a senior, he was in the eyes of many the best QB in school history. Given the circumstances of the program right now, Locker may not make that kind of meteoric rise. But it wouldn't surprise me at all if he shows vast improvement the next two years (assuming all goes well in his recovery from his broken thumb). While the thought of him playing another position may be intriguing to some, he is by far UW's best option at QB and the team would weaken itself by moving him.
All for now.
(And sorry this was on the hoops blog for a few minutes).
