January answers, volume seven

Another set:

Q: Anything new on the assistant coaching front?

A: With Monday's news on Joel Thomas, there are just two spots still open, including QB coach. One rumor making the rounds there is that it could be Doug Nussmeier, currently offensive coordinator at Fresno State but, you guessed it, a former QB at Idaho. Here's his bio, and he also has some extensive NFL experience, coaching for a few years with the Rams under former Husky assistant Scott Linehan. But so far this is just in the rumor stage so we'll see where it goes. Also still open is receivers/tight ends.

Q: Are they going to replace the Field Turf at Husky Stadium? It's looking like it needs it.

A: For now, most major decisions on anything regarding the stadium are on hold pending the effort to get public funding from the legislature. The results of that effort will be known by early spring. If approved, as we wrote the other day, this would be the last season in the current configuration of Husky Stadium, so they'd wait until the construction to do any major work.

Q: Are there any players on the Western Washington roster who might be candidates to play at UW?

A: Not as scholarship guys, but maybe some might try to become walk-ons. There's still quite a bit of difference between D-I and D-II football so there aren't a lot of guys on that roster UW ever recruited --- and now, obviously, a new staff is in place at UW that likely never saw many, or any, of those guys in the first place. Word is a number of the Western players will try to keep playing college football, but for scholarships they will likely have to look at the lower divisions.

Q: Where is Jon Brockman projected to go in the 2009 NBA Draft and is there any chance he plays football for the Huskies instead? He seems to have the prototypical build for a tight end?

A: Brockman doesn't show up on most mock drafts for 2009, indicating that right now, those who do those kinds of projections view him as a free agent. However, Lorenzo Romar has been adamant that Brockman has an NBA future and I think Brockman thinks similarly, so I think all of his efforts are devoted to that right now. He would have one year of football eligibility having never redshirted, but there is no indication he is thinking of anything other than pursuing pro basketball options after this season.

All for now.
