On scheduling and uniforms

Posted by Bob Condotta

I've gotten a lot of questions of late about the schedule for next season, and the uniforms.

Here's what I know:

--- On the uniforms: The official word is that there are some internal discussions about potentially changing the uniforms and new coach Steve Sarkisian is "heavily involved.'' No decisions have been made but it is under serious consideration and there is still time to get some revisions ordered through Nike but it would have to be done soon to to have them prior to next season. Exactly what might be done is still under discussion but one thing has been decided --- they will keep the names on the jerseys. There is no set timetable on when something would be done but with Sarkisian now gone until Jan. 2, likely not until after the New Year.

--- On the schedule: Pac-10 athletic directors held a conference call today to discuss some revisions in the conference scheduled proposed by ESPN/ABC, which would have been made for TV purposes. However, the revisions were pretty extensive and the decision was made to send the schedule back for more discussion, hoping for fewer disruptions.

These are changes only to the dates and times of conference games, and not to opponents --- for UW, it is unlikely there will be any change in who the Huskies play, only when. UW is hoping to create a bye in the schedule as it is slated to play 12 games in 12 weeks in 2009.

One complication, however, is that there are only 14 weeks in the schedule next year instead of the 15 this year --- teams cannot start playing games until the Thursday before Labor Day. Labor Day next year is on Sept. 7, the latest it can be. UW opens its season Sept. 5 at home against LSU. It cannot play a game the weekend before that so the only way to open up any space in the schedule is to move games after the Apple Cup, which is set for Nov. 21. However, both schools would like to keep the Apple Cup on that date, if possible, meaning they would rather move another game to after the Apple Cup, most likely to Dec. 5, as happened this year with Cal. That, however, wasn't exactly a rousing success.

Cal, UW and WSU all have 12 games in 12 weeks next year, and all are looking to create some byes in the schedule.

As a conference official said, reconfiguring the schedule to create some byes, yet still keep everyone happy "is something that's harder to do than it sounds.'' So for now, the schedule remains as is, but work continues.

UPDATE 6:30 p.m. --- Also, looks like Ed Orgeron is taken as he is apparently headed to Tennessee.

I think the Oregon and Oregon State uniforms are awful. Last year I think it was OSU that had a color scheme on the jerseys that made it look like...  Posted on December 18, 2008 at 5:53 AM by von_Trips. Jump to comment
Eugenedawg (Isn't that an oxymoron?) Anyway, I don't think anyone is calling for faux diamond plate and cartoon numbers on the uniforms....  Posted on December 17, 2008 at 5:17 PM by bowdown2uw. Jump to comment
Seriously, does Sark read the comments section on this blog? Open practices? More media access? And now new uniforms? As far as PR goes, this...  Posted on December 17, 2008 at 5:22 PM by PhinneyDawg. Jump to comment
