Sarkisian on Michalczik
Posted by Bob Condotta
There was a lot said at today's press conference so I'll break it up a little bit.
First, here are some of Steve Sarkisian's thoughts on the hiring of Jim Michalczik as offensive coordinator and O-line coach.
On hiring Michalczik away from Cal: "I'm a pretty good recruiter I guess, I don't know. ... I think Jim realizes it is a great opportunity. Obviously he has ties back to Washington. His wife went to school here, played volleyball here, there were some nautral fits there. We obviously have a lot of philosophical things where we align in the run game, the physical nature of how we want to be up front, and he realized it's a geat opportunity to be part of something special.''
On how duties will be split with Sarkisian calling plays: "A lot of (what Michalczik will do) is going to be the day to day operation of it, keeping meetings alive, keeping meetings going. Obviously I have other things to attend to at times that he's got to keep the thing flowing, keep it going, obviously a huge part in the run game in what we are doing there, a huge part in the pass protection. I really trust him because I've seen his body of work now in our conference for years. He's been successful at Oregon State and at Cal and at both places been a physical football team. On game day I will call the plays, but I will rely heavily on Jim, especially in the run game, what we need to get done, what we are seeing from the defense and what adjustments we need to make.''
On who will game plan: "We will do it together. I trust what he has done. I think Cal has had a 1000-yard rusher almost every he has been there. He knows how to run the football. Their numbers in sacks have been the lowest in the conference year in and year out. So I like what he's done.''
On importance of getting an O-line coach in quickly: "One of the key hires for me was to get a really good offensive line coach. It's a critical position. He coaches the nost players, more players than any other other coach on the staff, coaches five guys every snap. So that position to me was critical I and wanted to get a couple of recruiters in there, we are a little bit behind there on recruiting, so to get Johnny Nansen and Demetrice Martin in there going recruiting for us, especially in Southern California and Hawaii, was huge.''
