Hill talks about interview UPDATED

Posted by Bob Condotta

Fresno State coach Pat Hill confirmed his interview with Washington on Saturday in a brief interview with reporters there tonight.

Reporters caught up to Hill shortly before he entered FSU's annual team banquet. He said that UW officials had contacted Fresno State officials last week expressing interest in speaking with him.

He said he spent Saturday at UW talking with Husky athletic officials.

Hill called it a "great'' meeting in an interview played on KPGE-TV in Fresno and also reported by The Fresno Bee.

"They talked about their goals, their expectations, the facilities they're going to (build) and the things they're going to do to put Washington back on the map amongst the best teams in America,'' he said. "That's what they want to do.''

"They asked me about what my blueprint for success was, what my expectations and goals were. It was a great conversation,'' he said.

Sources have said Hill was not offered the job, and Hill appeared to confirm that when he discussed where he thinks the situation is.

"And in the end, I'll say this --- whoever accepts that job is going to have a great challenge but a great opportunity to be successful,'' he said.

Hill took no questions in an interview that lasted roughly 54 seconds. He then said he wanted to devote the rest of the night to the FSU banquet.

SOME INFO ON BRIAN KELLY --- The other coach to emerge over the weekend is Cincinnati's Brian Kelly. There is lots of talk that he may prefer the Notre Dame job should that come open, but it hasn't yet.

The Times was told that Kelly might be in town for an interview next week, possibly Wednesday. But a Cincinnati source pointed out the team is due to leave for Hawaii that day, making it hard to figure when he would fit in an in-person meeting in Seattle.

One source said Kelly and UW may have already talked a time or two.

There has also been speculation that Kelly is due to have a meeting on Wednesday with university officials discussing a couple of clauses in his contract, specifically regarding improvements to facilities and enlarging the school's 35,000 seat stadium. Clauses in Kelly's contract require the construction of two practice facilities by Sept. 1, 2009, and an indoor facility by Dec. 1, 2009, or his buyout is cut in half. (Here are some details on that in a story from October in which Kelly expresses satisfaction at the progress of the facilities.)

One source said most in Cincinnati view it a longshot that Kelly would take the UW job pointing out that he's from the East Coast and is exceptionally close to a brother who flies in for every game.

Kelly's contract is reported to pay him a guaranteed $1.2 million to $1.35 million per year. It also includes a buyout of $2 million before Jan. 15, 2009.

Anything related to Kelly could be much ado about nothing, however, if a report on Scout.com is to be believed. A writer for the Scout.com Notre Dame site reported today that Kelly has already told UW no.
