Is Patterson off the list?
Posted by Bob Condotta
You can apparently scratch another potential UW candidate off the list as reports out of Dallas are that TCU Gary Patterson has no interest in the Husky job.
Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist Gil Lebreton said on KJR-AM today that Patterson was approached about the UW job but said he had no interest. The paper will apparently report that tomorrow, as well, according to what LeBreton said on KJR.
LeBreton said that "I have reason to think that on Sunday evening he told Washington that he doesn't think it's a good fit and he appreciates them but he's not (interested).''
Patterson, who has been at TCU eight years, is also being mentioned as a candidate at Clemson but told the Star-Telegram that rumors he has already talked with the Tigers are "false.''
So if everything can be believed, that's at least the fifth potential candidate who no longer appears a possibility.
Let's briefly recap:
GARY PINKEL --- Has agreed to a new deal to stay at Missouri after saying his agent had conversations with UW.
JIM MORA --- Released a statement Oct. 31 saying he is not a candidate. Rumblings persist that he may still be in the running, but the Times heard from several sources over the weekend that things hadn't really changed with Mora and he's no more of a candidate now than when he released the statement.
WILL MUSCHAMP --- Agreed to a deal to stay at Texas last week and become the coach-in-waiting. The Times was told he had apparently been offered the job.
LANE KIFFIN --- Apparently headed to Tennessee if anywhere, according to numerous reports today, though that report has also been denied.
CHRIS PETERSEN --- Reported to be in discussions for a new deal at Boise State and reported not to be all that interested in leaving, with his sights set on eventually taking over at Oregon if he goes anywhere.
DENNIS FRANCHIONE --- Though one web site said he may be a leading candidate, he told KJR on Tuesday he had not been contacted.
DAVE CHRISTENSEN --- The Times has learned that he has not been contacted. Is thought very interested in the job, however, so things could change quickly with him.
TROY CALHOUN --- A story today stated he had been contacted by Clemson and Tennessee but not Washington.
So who does that leave?
There are increasing rumblings that the the Huskies may set their sights on Jeff Tedford. It's also known that Pat Hill is interested in the job and he has connections to the decision-markers at UW. Cincinnati's Brian Kelly is also thought on the list though one source reports that more likely options for him are Tennessee (if the Kiffin stuff isn't true or falls through) or Notre Dame, were that to come open. Utah's Kyle Wittingham is also thought high on the list and while there have been no reports of contact, there haven't been any saying he hasn't been contacted or isn't interested, either. There is also a rumor making the rounds that UW may have some interest in Jim Harbaugh.
There was also a report that UW had some interest in Brian Billick, though one source called that really unlikely and said money might be a factor there, with Billick maybe holding out for a richer NFL job.
And there doesn't seem to be much to rumors that Les Miles could be involved in any way. That talk arose largely because Miles is known to have interviewed in 2004 and knows the decision makers at UW.
There's also Notre Dame offensive coordinator Michael Haywood, who is known to have interviewed, though most consider him unlikely to get the job.
For now, the search apparently continues without Patterson.
