Willingham on recruiting

Here are a few more notes and quotes from Tyrone Willingham's meeting with the media today.

At the top of the interest meter might be what Willingham had to say about recruiting.

I detailed last week the difficulty UW is having now in recruiting.

One reporter today asked Willingham what he tells recruits. Willingham used an analogy of a fire, that people from far away only see the smoke while it's only those close to it who know the cause, apparently trying to say that the closer people get to the program, the more they will continue to be attracted to it.

"They know there are some conditions but they don't know all of the stuff that you get on a daily basis, so they are not aware of that so we still have a great opportunity to go in there and if we turn our things around we can still present a very positive outcome to the young men that we are recruiting and they can see themselves coming in and helping our program and getting better,'' he said.

Asked if recruits express concern about the future of the head coach, he said "some do, some don't. There is always concern there because every young man I think wants to identify with the head coach of our program.''

Reminded that he's said in the summer that recruits are watching and waiting to see what will happen at UW, he said "I think they are still waiting and watching.''

And asked if getting an endorsement from Scott Woodward would help, Willingham said: "Those things all count. Any positives that we keep moving forward with helps with everything that we are trying to do.''

Finally, asked if the Huskies are changing their recruiting approach any due to this year's struggles to bring in more JC players, Willingham said: "We've had very limited success with the junior colleges, so we've focused early on on the high schools. But if there is a junior collge player that meets the university's needs and standards, we will recruit him.''
