More from Willingham
Posted by Bob Condotta
Here's a bit more from Tyrone Willingham's meeting with the media today:
On the team outlook: "I believe we will be eager to get started and believe it was a good week of work (during the bye).''
On OSU: "They are a team that seems to start the season kind of slow and then they start to come on like gangbusters. It happens usually about the time we are playing them so we are anticipating the full force. ... Probably the only thing a little different is they haven't had the field goal kicker be as perfect as he has been in other years coming into our ball game ... Their defense presents a lot of problems from the standpoint of their structure, what they do with their corners and how they involve their safeties down in the front, so it will be a matchup that will force us to play some of our best football.''
On whether there will be any carryover from the emotions of last year's game: "I think there is always some concern about that, especially with the way things happened down there and who it happened to. That has the ability to impact on it. But we will try to get our guys to focus on the game and hopefully play it with great emotion, but never cross that line.''
On trying to simulate OSU's offense in practice: "Again, you try to and hopefully we have some guys on our team that have some similar attributes. Obviously I think Jordan Polk can run the fly sweep or do thinigs like that that will give our defense a chance to see in real time what it looks like and feels like. ..... (OSU RB Jacquizz Rodgers) is very small in a sense but yet very big because he's a 200 pound kid, so they offer some unique things fron that standpoint to. It's difficult to duplicate, but hopefully we have some things that will give our guys a good look so that we can best simulate what they do.''
On David Freeman: "Freeman, we hope to be able to get back to work. Actually still trying to figure out exactly what is the injruy, believe it is a high ankle sprain. Seems to be one that is hurting one foot more than the other but they are both hurting.''
On Casey Bulyca's knee: "Just seemed like it's not getting better, so the best thing to do is operate now and maybe have him come back later or just go forward. ... It's something that has been going on for a while. He has done a great job of hanging through it, but now it's reached a point where it's better to have the surgery.''
On whether UW tried to recruit Jacquizz Rodgers: "Our timing was not right because we did get a call on him, but the timing wasn't right and he ended up going with Oregon State.''
Goodwin be as close to full as possible based on the nature of that injury
On importance of trying to regain winning edge at Husky Stadium: "It has to be because that has to be one place that you count on great things happening for you, that you want to have your consistency. It's always great to go on the road, but you want to be able to count on winning at home. What we've got to do is create the plays and the energy to get our fans excited and make it that very difficult place that it has always been.''
On Jake Locker: "He is doing fine and it will be the timetable that we gave earlier.''
On OSU's defense: "They play very physical, very active and been able to get their execution and have some success and create some energy with their defensive play. In that USC ball game they were able to come up with critical stops and make big plays that made a difference, and when you do that you get the momentum on your side and are able to keep duplicating those kinds of plays and that to me has been their strength.''
