Bulyca sidelined, could be out for year
Posted by Bob Condotta
The biggest personnel news emanating from Tyrone Willingham's press luncheon today is that guard Casey Bulyca will have knee surgery in the next week or two and could be done for the season.
Willingham said Bulyca had been struggling with a knee problem for a while and it was finally decided he should have surgery. He said Bulyca could return this year but also left open the possibility that he is done for the year.
Ryan Tolar, a starter at guard last year, will return to the starting lineup to play guard alongside Jordan White-Frisbee. Willingham said the No. 3 guard behind those two is uncertain but one option is Matt Sedillo, who has been getting reps at both center and guard.
Willingham also said that RB Brandon Yakaboski will have knee surgery soon and is out for the rest of the season, one thing that may have played into the decision to take the redshirt off Terrance Dailey.
Safety Darin Harris also remains out with the concussion suffered against BYU.
RB David Freeman, he said, seems to be improving from what he said is a high ankle sprain, though his status for this week remains uncertain.
Otherwise, Willingham said the injury situation is pretty good. He said S Johri Fogerson "worked last week'' and is getting better, and that WR D'Andre Goodwin also practiced and should be ready go to against Oregon State. Dailey and Willie Griffin, he said, got most of the reps at tailback last week, but Brandon Johnson was one of the players who showed up and pronounced himself as on the road to recovery from what he said were rib and shoulder injuries suffered against Arizona. He said he should be able to play against OSU.
The Beavers have a few significant injuries. WR Sammie Stroughter is suffering from a hip pointer, safety Al Afalava a groin injury and cornerback Brandon Hughes a hamstring, but all are expected to play against UW. Afalava is the player whose hit sidelined Jake Locker in last year's game in Corvallis. Afalava and Hughes each sat out against WSU. OSU WR Shane Morales also suffered a quad bruise and back spasms against WSU but is also expected back this week.
LOCKER UPDATE --- Also, Willingham said today that Locker is progressing fine from his surgery and that his ETA to return remains the same as before. He was judged to be out 6-8 weeks when first injured.
