Ranking the Pac, week seven
Posted by Bob Condotta
The week we learned that Stanford equals contender, Arizona pretender, and not much else that we didn't already know.
Well, maybe that Washington State is even worse than we thought, UCLA maybe a little better, and that it's to believe now that Arizona State was the No. 2 pick in the preseason media poll.
In fact, for those who want a reminder of the preseason poll, here's how it looked:
1, USC
2, ASU
3, Oregon
4, Cal
5, UCLA
6, Oregon State
7, Arizona
8, Washington
9, Stanford
10, Washington State
The two big misses right now look like ASU and Stanford, though worth remembering when the two met in Tempe on Sept. 6, it looked like we all had it just right as the Sun Devils won 41-17. Showing again how quickly things can change in college football.
Now on to this week's rankings:
1, USC --- Looking like it will be another year that when it's over, everyone will wonder how the Trojans ever lost a conference game.
2, Cal --- Bears are only undefeated conference team left at 2-0, but will get a test this week at Arizona where it lost in 2006, 24-20.
3, Oregon --- 5-2 overall, but 0-2 against ranked teams (USC and Boise State). Now has a week off and won't play at home again until Nov. 8.
4, Stanford --- Now No. 2 in the conference in rushing at 184 per game --- and hasn't even played Washington State yet. Critical game at UCLA this Saturday. But if it wins that, Cardinal should be 5-1 in conference play heading into Nov. 8 game at Oregon.
5, Oregon State --- Got a nice start on its quest for a third straight Neuheisel Cup (also known as the Northwest Championship). Can take step two this week with its fifth straight win over the Huskies (which is also yet-another hard-to-believe stat indicating how far UW has fallen of late.
6, Arizona --- Guess we should have held off the coronations for UA's breakthrough after last week. Loss at Stanford showed this is still a team learning to win, and now the hard part of the schedule kicks in --- Cal and USC at home the next two weeks.
7, UCLA --- A gritty effort by the Bruins in Eugene and now they get Stanford for homecoming. Ranked just 106th in the nation in total offense this week.
8, Arizona State --- Biggest problem is inability to mount any kind of a running game. ASU ranks 116h in the nation this week in rushing (last in the Pac-10) at 83.67 per game.
9, Washington --- So how are they going to stop Jacquizz Rodgers, whose 119 yards per game is 10th in the nation?
10, Washington State --- Allowing 55.75 points in four Pac-10 games, and now USC comes to town.
