Willingham on the redshirt issue
Posted by Bob Condotta
What feels the hottest topic right now is was the decision Saturday to play two more true freshmen, most notably WR Cody Bruns, who was on the field for just a handful of plays and wasn't inserted until the third quarter, when the score was already 38-7. Running back Terrance Daily also played but he saw action in the first half and had six carries.
So here are the full quotes on that topic from Tyrone Willingham's meeting with the media today:
On the fact that decision raised some eyebrows: "Any time you play a freshman at any point other than the first ball game it raises eyebrows. But I think if you go back and look over my career over the time that I have been here, we have been very wise in how we have used and utilized our freshmen. And I think that is still consistent with the freshmen we put in on Saturday. If you saw, I think still when they went in to play there were still eight games that we had remaining. We had injuries that affected their timing of going in and I think also the young men wanted to be involved and help our football team win.''
On whether there was a goal this year of how many freshmen would play: "I have one rule --- play the best players and play them when they are ready to play and ready to contribute and do a great job to help themselves and help the football team. But no, I never had a number because you really don't know how your freshman will respond. We said a couple of weeks back one of the concerns I have is the first week of school because now they are inundated with a lot more information. So how do you handle that? You don’t know. It's guess work to try to figure that out. So you have to watch them, see when they are ready and if they are ready. Then at that time you provide an opportunity to get them in the lineup and help the team.''
On whether there was any indication from Bruns or his family that he didn't want to play: "Let me say it this way -- I didn't hear anything about him not wanting that opportunity.''
