Monday Willingham notes
Posted by Bob Condotta
Not a whole lot of news from Tyrone Willingham's weekly meeting with the media. But here goes with some notes:
--- Willingham said he anticipates that every injured player (save for guys already out for the year) will be available for the OSU game Oct. 18 with the possible exception of safety Darin Harris, who he said could be a long-term absence. Harris has not played since suffering a concussion against BYU. The list of players he expects back, he said, includes Nate Williams and D'Andre Goodwin.
--- Willingham again defended the decision to play Cody Bruns saying that there were eight games left in the season at the time the decision was made and that Bruns wanted to play. Asked if he heard from anyone on the Bruns family or Bruns himself that Bruns didn't want to play this year, Willingham said: "I didn't hear anything about him not wanting that opportunity.''
--- Willingham said the goals for the bye week are the same as they were for the last bye week --- get healthy and get better. But with injuries being more of a concern now than they were then, getting healthy may be more of a concern.
--- Willingham talked a bit at length about the running game struggles against Arizona. He said one of the main issues was that the absence of Jake Locker meant that the defense now doesn't have to devote a player to just defending Locker, meaning the other team essentially has another defender for the rest of the field. He also said the offensive line regressed a bit from the Stanford game, which he felt had been the best game of the year for that unit,
--- Asked what pitch he gives to recruits right now, Willingham said he tells them that they can "see that this is a young football team'' that will soon be "a much better football team.'' But he said "the goal for us is to not wait. We've got to do it now.''
--- The players of the week are WR Devin Aguilar, DE Daniel Te'o-Nesheim and snapper Danny Morovick. The service team players of the week Bruns, De'Shon Matthews and Riley Gervais.
--- QB Ronnie Fouch was the only player who met the media here today. He said he feels more sore than any other game he has played but that the bye week should mean he will be just fine for the OSU game.
