A little more Arizona post-mortem

Posted by Bob Condotta

A lot of times on Sunday in this space we've analyzed and debated some of what happened in the UW game the day before.

But right now, there isn't much to analyze or debate. The cold, hard truth is that the Huskies just aren't very good in any area. It really doesn't matter much what they do, or what the other team does. The basic difference in these games right now is that the Huskies just aren't as good as their opponent, in any area.

Greg Hansen, columnist for the Arizona Daily Star, wrote today that after seeing the Huskies on Saturday, he thinks they might be as bad as some of those "1-10 Oregon State teams of yesteryear, the 1-11 Stanford team of 2006 and the 1-10 Cal team of 2001. And of course, the 2-10 Arizona team of '03.''

That's not the kind of company the Huskies want to be keeping. But right now, it's hard to argue the point.

For added proof, take a look at some of the updated stats.

Here's a link to the Pac-10 team statistical report from the NCAA. There are 14 team categories in which the teams are ranked nationally.

UW doesn't rank higher than 73 in any of them (pass offense). UW ranks 87th or worse in all of the rest and is 104th or worse in 10 of them and dead last in two (pass efficiency defense and punt returns). UW is 118th in another (total defense, ahead of only Idaho) and 117th in another (scoring defense).

The schedule can maybe continue to be considered a minor factor in inflating some of the numbers. But five games into the season --- three of them Pac-10 contests --- the numbers now are starting to even out and be fairly reflective for everybody (and one could argue that teams like Oklahoma and Arizona probably could have done a lot more damage had they not stepped off the gas so early after getting big leads).

Most disappointing continues to be the rushing offense --- UW is 105h in the nation and Washington's average of 2.91 per carry is the worst in the Pac-10.

Consider further that UW has been outscored by 117 points this season --- no other BCS team has been outscored by more than 103 (Arkansas).

The numbers, unfortunately for the Huskies, just about say it all right now.
