More from Willingham
Posted by Bob Condotta
Here's the rest of what Tyrone Willingham had to say today when he met the media at UW:
(Is there a point of no return in the season with freshman playing?) Yes. And exactly when I hit it, I don't know. If you remember a few years ago, we were going right down to the wire with Jake Locker. If one of those receivers Cody Burns or somewhere else was going to make a difference in us being in a bowl game, you know what ... you say let's do what we have to do to get it done for the team. Ok and I think they would be excited about that opportunity.
(Victor Aiyewa out?) "Yes."
(Is that becoming a concern at safety?) "No. They'll come back."
(I mean, for this week?) "Yes that's a little bit of a concern. We're thin back there. But our guys will find a way. We'll move somebody else in. I think you saw this week that Marquis Persley got some inside work. So we'll move some things around and make some adjustments. Those guys on the backfield should be able to almost play any position because that's one of the best way, the strongest way is to have interchangeable parts. That's what we want.
(Any more significance because it's a nationally televised game?) "Absolutely. It does. You think about, I go back to when it was a little different day of communication when you only had one or two games on national television. For the teams that got three games on national television in a year, that was something special. Now it seems like if the right cable picks you up or the right satellite position is there, people can pick you up all across the country. These are special opportunities here. Our young men need to understand that. Even in today's age where it seems like you're global all the time. This is a special opportunity to be on national television and we got a chance to show a lot of people what our program is all about.
(For recruiting?) "Every facet. The guys exposure. Team exposure. Recruiting. The university. We have a great university. There will be a lot of things about this university that will be showcased because of our football weekend. How strong this place is academically and how it fits into the national rankings.
(Brandon Yakaboski?) "Brandon could see some time. Right now, we're still anticipating that it will probably be Freeman, Griffin and Johnson. Those three first and Yakaboski could see some time."
(Can you take advantage of OU's secondary?) "The pressure is on everyone. Because if you're getting that much heat from everywhere else, which we think we will, then that means the offensive line, running backs, everybody has got to protect. If the receiver do their job and they don't have enough time to do it, then you still fail. So it's everywhere. Everybody has to perform. Everybody has to win their one-on-one.
(Is the secondary one area you can exploit?) "They're too good in the secondary. ... The positive is, you can't play the game on paper. That's the positive. They got to line up and play. We got to line up and play. And when you do that, no one knows what's going to happen. That sun coming off that west, southwest corner, they can not be familiar with that as it comes off our stadium. That could make a difference. The adjustments they have to make. Playing in this stadium as opposed to playing at home. I don't know where they are sleeping at, the bed may be a little lumpy down there. (laughs in audience) I don't know. If our hotels in town recognize that they have them, make the beds lumpy. (more laughs) All those things. You got to play the game. That's what you do. That's what so much fun about athletics, about football. You got to play the game.
(Has the schedule toughened you up and prepared you for an upset?) "We hope it does. And if not, we know one thing, it will make you ready for the Pac-10. Because these are some three pretty good teams that we've had to line up against and I don't think anybody can dispute that. These are all top caliber teams. Very professional they way they go about playing the game. Oregon is very methodical. They know what they are doing. They execute. BYU didn't seem quite as explosive or fast, but guess what, they're execution was equally as good. Oklahoma seems all of the above. And they're going to be excellent. No, we're going to be a better football team. What we have to do, as I tell the young men, you got to keep pumping water. There's water in our wells, we got to keep pumping because it will come.
(Can you predict an upset as a coach?) "I'm already shaking my head because I'm not going there. (laughs) Somebody else can give them bulletin board material. I won't. I love it, but no.
(You seem more loose this week.) "No. I'm not any more loose than i am most days. I'm usually pretty intense about what I do. You see it in different forms. That's all. The focus is still the same. Win the next ball game. Oklahoma is next. We got to do our best job. Put our guys in the right positions as coaches and win that game.
(It was meant as a compliment.) "Ok. Thank you. I'll take it."
(Plans for the bye week?) "We got a pretty standard routine for our bye week. Obviously the first thing when you get there - it's a little early for me to be talking about, but since we know when it is, we like to work just like we would for a normal game week. We're going to work three days. We'll work Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday just like we normally would for a regular game. We'll give our guys off Friday and Saturday. We'll be back to our schedule on Sunday. So that doesn't change. Our guys know what we do. They know how we do, when we do it. And they get into the rotation and we should be able to execute.
(Is it too early for a bye week?) "No. My safeties have been screaming for a bye week."
