Ranking the Pac
Posted by Bob Condotta
This will usually (hopefully) be a Sunday feature of the blog, but moved back this week due to the UCLA-Tennessee game, which then caused even further upheaval in the rankings themselves.
1, USC --- Meet the new boss, etc.. .... Trojans looked as good as the Huskies bad.
2, Oregon --- Are Ducks really that good or did Huskies just make them look that good? May not find that out until Oct. 4, when Oregon plays at USC.
3, Arizona State --- I don't read much into that first game. ASU got the early lead it needed then took the foot off the pedal.
4, Cal --- Sounds like Tedford might have been right with all that pre-season praise of his running backs.
5, UCLA --- I was watching a pre-season interview of Rick Neuheisel last night when he made an interesting point. He said that after taking over, he asked all of the former UCLA assistants who had worked for Karl Dorrell last year how many other Pac-10 teams had more talent than the Bruins. He said they unanimously said the only one was USC. The Tennessee game showed he may have more to work with than people thought.
6, Arizona --- Scoring 70 on air would be impressive. Should at least be a lot of exciting games, if nothing else. Their Pac-10 opener at UCLA Sept. 20 looks mighty interesting now.
7, Stanford --- We'll really get a feel for these guys this week when they play at Arizona State.
8, Oregon State -- OSU has lost its first conference game every year since 2003, so Beavers are used to rebounding. But 0-2 start looms with game at Penn State this week.
9, (tie) Washington, Washington State --- Maybe they'll just cancel the Apple Cup this year.
