More on new Husky
Posted by Bob Condotta
A new addition to the UW roster, offensive lineman Nick Scott, will apparently be a walk-on, according to an article on Scout.com this evening.
In the article (which is subscription-only), Scott is quoted as saying that "I don't have a scholarship or the promise of one, but they said if I have a good camp and they have one available for me, that I have a good chance of getting one.''
Scott transferred from Drake, a Football Championship Subdivision school where he spent the last three seasons --- redshirting his first year and playing the other two. After last season, he moved to Seattle to be close to family members after an illness in the family. For those reasons, he has apparently received a waiver making him eligible to play this season.
In the Scout.com story, Scott says he is 6-5 and about 337 and played last season at left tackle. He figures to join in the depth at that spot behind two-year returning starter Ben Ossai and backup redshirt freshman Mark Armelin.

Leaving school to support his family?
Walking on the team thinking if he works hard enough he may earn a scholarship?
6-5 and 300+ with 2 years experience in college?
IMO, this is the kind of kid with the kind of attitude I want on Husky field.
Nice, really good choice Nick. You will not be disappointed. Welcome to the UW!

Thanks for the article onewood (previous thread).
Sounds like it came straight from the campus paper though....
Keep emailing Bernard....you can renovate Martin Stadium to pack it with the entire fan base of 24,000 rabid Cougs who actually come to see the football power house that is Portland State.
Please......

...it's been alluded to that I've made fun of Mr. Scott just because...well...not true......the context of this kid joining willingham and the UW football team this year has to be viewed against the backdrop of the dearth of commitments willingham has received from the recruiting class of 2009...if willingham had really worked his butt off recruiting and had, say, two or three commitments in the six-months he's been "working" on this class...then nobody would think that the announcement of an occasional starter from a mediocre Division II midwest football team was interesting...nor comical. I find it very interesting AND comical because this kid may be the best willingham can do this year...and as I said...he might keep this recruiting ploy a secret...you wouldn't want SC, Cal, BYU, Oklahoma nor Oregon to learn about this...or the Division II teams may have depleted rosters for years to come...

Scott is a walk-on. Walk-ons don't use a scholarship unless they play well enough to earn one. And he's not a commit, he's a non-scholarship transfer!
Our back-up Offensive tackles are just RS-Frosh and haven't played a down of college football. Seems like the coaches welcome Scott because he is physically much more developed and has played a good bit of college football. Walk-ons with significant experience are a very helpful thing.

...welcome away...but when your touting a Division II, occasional starter as the next best choice to a red shirt freshman...somethings terribly wrong with the recruiting...but we already knew that...didn't we...

Wow jh, what you're saying is so interesting, please go on. You're ability to relate every piece of UW news back to your obsession of Willingham is quite impressive. I'm talking Glenn Close in 'Fatal Attraction' obsessive. Keep clicking that lamp on and off in the dark.
On a more interesting note, welcome to UW Scott!

jh -
I agree that recruiting is looking a little thin right now. As I've said before though, this is a very weak class for Washington State HS Recruits.
Next to California, Washington State is normally the place most recruitiers start looking for talent. This means that after Colemen, Trufant, Enger, Moore, Heard, Simone and maybe Washington (Kennedy HS) the State recruiting cupboard is bare.
6 or 7 recruits from Washington State means that 10-12 are coming from out-of-state. Most, if not all of these kids, will not commit to Washington until they have taken all of theiir visits.
My concern is our in-state kids. Unless most of them are second choice kids to Ty (which very well could be the case), we should have at least those commitments by now.

...this recruiting year for willingham/UW is setting up as more of a disaster than his first two years,,,remember that he wasn't fired from ND because of his W-L record...it was his historic worse recruiting in ND history...

Well JH,
Let's see how Weis' recruits at ND do against Willingham's recruits at UW this year.
Oh, I forgot, regardless of who loses the game this year, it still will all be Willingham's fault because you're a "Weisspologist?"

...I can't wait...that is if willingham still has a job after going 0-3 and 1-4...

JH,
Isn't the more interesting question, whether Weis will be around after ND starts 1-5 this year? Of course, that assumes it can be San Diego State in its opener.

Welcome to the UW, Nick!
I believe UW will go 1 - 2 to start the season, Ty will remain coach at the completion of a .500 season, and you will continue to be irritating and a good target to poke fun at on slow days.

jh, Drake is not a D2 program. They play non-scholarship FCS football in the Pioneer League. And have been pretty sucessful doing so. Therefore, since you have no idea what you are talking about all UW fans should be on notice to wonder why you question Willingham and his staff's recruiting techniques.
