Locker-Tebow comparison "scary''

Posted by Bob Condotta

UW offensive coordinator Tim Lappano gave an early-camp update to reporters today, but what might have been most interesting was his discussion of the trip some coaches took last spring to Florida to look at the spread offense of the Gators.

Lappano said the coaches got to watch a couple of practices and most of the scrimmages. While Lappano said UW coaches wanted to study Florida's spread offense, he said another task was to look at Florida's personnel to see how it compared with Washington's.

That included studying Florida QB Tim Tebow, the reigning Heisman Trophy holder and a player often compared to UW's Jake Locker.

Lappano said the comparisons are accurate.

"I stood right behind him for two days,'' Lappano said. "I watched him throw every ball, every hand off, the whole thing. They are a lot alike. He's a great kid, class kid, polite, good-looking, sharp kid. A really good kid. They are a lot a like. It's scary almost how much (alike).''

Here are a few other notes from Lappano:

--- He said he's been impressed by the incoming freshmen. "I like the speed at receiver, the speed at running back. Jordan Polk can run. He can fly. Johri Fogerson can run. He had a good day yesterday. Cody Bruns can run. He had the second-fastest shuttle time. Everything we thought those young guys were (they are). David Freeman is explosive. He did some nice things yesterday. So all those kids can run, which is nice. ... And the big guy, Kavario (Middleton) is showing up. He's really athletic. He doesn't have it all figured out yet at the line of scrimmage and the run game and all, but he's a really athletic kid who has great hands, good ball skills and good body control. He's really talented.'''

--- UW suddenly has almost a glut at running back with seven players at tailback due to the fact that Chris Polk is currently playing there. "We're going to have to figure it out in the next couple of weeks where to plug them all in at,'' Lappano said.

--- Lappano said Jake Locker has looked good throwing the ball. "He was great the first day, okay the second day, and great yesterday. He just missed a couple of throws the second day, but he's playing pretty good right now. He hasn't had a bad day yet, and he's had two really good days.''

--- Backup Ronnie Fouch is also playing well, he said. "He's throwing accurately and doing a pretty good job,'' he said.

Love to hear that Bruns is fast. That was the knock on him, wasn't it? He already has great hands. Sounds like a sure thing at slot receiver for the next 3-4 years.

No offense, I love Locker but I think you compare Locker TO Tebow, not the other way around. Tebow does after all, have the Heisman......

This team is going to surprise a lot of so called experts. I call them lazy journalists. Can't do their research or think for themself so they just follow the crowd. This is going to be a fun season and I can't wait for it to start. I suspect that a number of bloggers, will drop off after the smoke clears in Autzen from the Dawgs plucking duck feathers.

Since people here love discussing strength of schedule, here's an article forecasting an increase in teams scheduling easier OOC games in the near future, assuming the BCS is here to stay: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/preview08/news/story?id=3523291

Can't say the current schedule favors the Huskies, but I don't mind seeing the likes of Oklahoma and Ohio State coming to town. Shoot, I wouldn't mind seeing a UW-Florida "showdown."

Dave, I can't wait to see Bruns get on the field. I think the guys that were doubting his speed will be pleasantly surprised. There's track speed, and football speed. I think he has football speed. We'll find out shortly. Can't wait.

Well, this bit of reporting is sure to be hanging in the fancy Duck locker room. Great bulletin board material....good going Lappano. Now we are facing the Heisman candidate. I hope this goes to Locker's head. It might be a good idea to take the name Jake Locker off his locker in the Husky locker room and just replace it with "Heisman". Then it could become known as the "Heisman Locker". LOL.

@ducks dominate-

Your comment really didn't require and LOL, due to the fact it really wasn't funny at all...

For your sake, I hope you were geeked when you came up with that.

..." I wouldn't mind seeing a UW-Florida "showdown."...

...the only reason why Florida would play UW under willingham, unfortunately, is to downgrade their schedule and San Jose State's schedule is full...like Ohio St. and Oklahoma before...

Did you guys notice that Lappano likes our speed at RB and receiver? Now, if the non-skill position players also have some great speed, we could seriously surprise some opponents; not saying we won't lose some games because of our youth, but speed kills.

Speed kills. Just ask Oklahoma. West Virginia, specifically Noel Devine, put on a show last year against them. Speed kills.

Hey JH,

Better keep ole Jimmy away from those Keggers.

And to the Ducks, you wish you had a player with the potential of Locker, and every negative comment towards him is just a sign of your envy and ignorance.

Oregon Ducks, 1917 Rose Bowl Champs

91 years and counting........

mike - UO just strives for higher goals then the Rose Bowl, like the Fiesta Bowl as the most recent example. Keep shining up that AMC Pacer son, some day it will be worth something agin.

When Locker wins more then 4 games in a seaon, he might be a hesiman candidate.

don't you think he 100% regrets this UW decision, he'd be starting for a top 15 team down in oregon and I know that burns him. why do you think he played baseball?

I agree andrew, I think Pflugrad will be a good posession receiver. I think Ricky Cookman might have been a better choice, but tough not to go with the coaches son.

"UO just strives for higher goals then the Rose Bowl, like the Fiesta Bowl as the most recent example"

The problem with that statement is the evidence points otherwise........

Huskies
7 Rose Bowl Victories

Oregon
1 (91 years ago)

Huskies
2 National Championships

Oregon
0

Oregon 37-58-5 all-time versus the Huskies

Keep striving.......

That was the hardest I've laughed in a long time. Thanks to whatever Duck fan said that. The irony is your own coach, Mike Bellotti was on KJR at PAC-10 media day and he admitted that he really feels that Oregon needs to win a Rose Bowl. That that is the goal for the team every year and it is frustrating that Oregon hasn't one the Rose Bowl in a very long time. Go to KJRAM.com it was the interview with Dave "softy" Mahler. You can hear your coach say it.
