Curtis Shaw leaving team for personal reasons

Posted by Bob Condotta

UW has just released a statement saying that receiver Curtis Shaw has left the team.

Here is the release:

Washington sophomore wide receiver Curtis Shaw has left the Husky football team for family reasons, head coach Tyrone Willingham announced today.

Shaw, from Stockton, Calif., played in all 13 games as a true freshman last season, serving as a tailback, wide receiver and kickoff returner for the Huskies.

"The opportunity will be here for him to return once his family issues have been resolved,” said Willingham. “For the time being, that needs to be his focus.”

--- To add futher comment, we have been assured that Shaw is not in legal trouble or anything like that. And that while the door is being left open for him to return at a later date, we are told this is a "long term'' situation and he is not expected back any time soon.

Shaw was at practice this morning and visible in the lunch area today during our regular media session as this is apparently something that just occurred.

Shaw was the second-leading returning WR for the Huskies with five catches last season for 47 yards, with a long of 23. He was expected to be a key contributor for the Huskies this year as they seek to replace five graduating WRs from last year's squad.

Shaw was one of seven true freshmen to play last season, initially coming to UW as a running back before switching to WR at mid-season. He had four receptions for 46 yards against Oregon State late in the season. He was regarded as one of the fastest players on the team, running a 10.54-second 100 meters as a high school senior.

His departure means the only UW receiver with any playing experience is sophomore D'Andre Goodwin, who had six catches for 29 yards last season. The Huskies will otherwise depend on true or redshirt freshmen at the spot, or walk-ons.

That could be a big loss, but the more important thing is for him to resolve the "personal reasons". Best of luck to him in the meantime, he appeared like a good kid. Hopefully it is nothing major.

me too. yeesh... truth is, shaw is one of the guys i was most looking forward to watching this year. those few times we saw him make soft catches last year had me interested in seeing him develop. nonetheless, i'm mostly wishing he and his family are okay.

* Garcia (only returning all pac10 player) -- injured
* Locker (pac10 frosh of the year) -- injured
* Savannah (team's leading tackler '07) -- injured, academically ineligible
* Johnson (effectively only returning RB, projected starter) -- injured
* Shaw (one of our two returning receivers with any experience) -- gone from team for personal reasons

Gosh, the hits just keep coming for this team.

Seriously, for this team to have any chance of a successful campaign, we need everything to go right. And as of August 11th, it seems like everything possible is going wrong.

I've had this inside info on this for a while.. He's a good kid, but has had many many personal issues over the past year that not many have known about (I won't get in to the details). I was really hoping getting to play would help him get over those issues, but I guess it didn't at the end of the day. This is a big loss.

Everyone needs to chill out.

First off, just because a guy is being held out of pre-season practice doesn't mean they won't be ready come Aug. 30.

Also, Shaw is a loss, but let's look at what we do have at that postion:

Goodwin
Logan
Boyles
Aguilar
Kearse
Bruns
Young
Taylor
Jordan Polk
maybe Chris Polk at times too.

Those are some impressive athletes. I hope Shaw comes back, but Tyrone has upgraded the WR talent significantly.

Garcia- recovering remarkably well from injury and could be ready early in the season

Locker- will be back at practice soon in preparation to shred the Ducks on Aug. 30

Savannah- ineligible but could return any time.

Johnson- being held out of some practices but will be ready soon.

Shaw- door is still open for his return.

Out of curiosity, who out of the list just posted by Sunny do people feel will be the biggest surprise? Obviously, they are all pretty good athletes and highly rated, and I don't mean which one will be the best, but which one do you think will open the most eyes?

Coach Brooks here;

Wow you guys are striking out left and right.

Just for the hell of it - I went to an online anagram generator and typed in: 'Lambright Neuheisel Willingham and it pooped out;

Gullible, Nightmarish Meanwhile

Seriously, look for yourself at http://www.anagramgenius.com/server.php?source_text=Lambright+Neuheisel+Willingham&emphasis=1&gender=2&vulgar=0&seen=true

What does it all mean? Hell I don't know, but it makes me smile when I think about it.

Your solution? One word......TEQUILLA!!!

This link is not intentionally related to my previous post, just some footage of Kearse I had not seen before.

Minor note, at the start of the interview he stated he almost committed to Oregon. I wasn't aware of that.

Listen brookes,

We get it. You laugh at us because we're awful. We've been bad for a few years, and will probably be bad for four or five more if we end up getting rid of Winningham.

Don't you have anything better to do???? Leave us alone. Please?

You now what makes me smile. Oregon Football fans. Who base their bloated, self absorbent view of themselves on a Fiesta Bowl victory and a Sun Bowl victory. The rest of their history is full of woulda, coulda, shoulda wishing they had the tradition and history of their rival to the north. Nationally they are known as the most obnoxious, classless fans in the PAC-10. BRING'S A SMILE TO MY FACE EVERY TIME. AND I'LL HAVE AN EVEN BIGGER SMILE ON MY FACE WHEN THEY AGAIN ARE AVERAGE AND GO TO AN AVERAGE BOWL. AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey DawgFan,

Regarding your 4:24 post below, is it possible to give us an indication of if you expect him back this season without getting into the details of his personal reasons? I understand the article states it is a "long term" situation, but can you add any anonymous but clarifying post to the matter?

Many thanks, if so.

Dawgfan sense it seems like you have some inside info (or at least you say you do) do you think Shaw will be returning this year at all or ever?

None of us will ever know why Curtis had to go home unless Curtis wants us to know. It's obviously important so lets leave it at that. Damn, I'm bummed.

5:16 PM, Aug 11, 2008

I'm fine not knowing, I'm just wondering if it is possible for DawgFan to give us an indication if he'll be able to return this year. Obviously it's not absolute, if he can provide us one, but he is in the position to let us know that without divulging the personal reason involved. Obviously, should he chose not to, then so be it, it didn't hurt to ask.

Does this kind of thing happen at USC?

Posted by DawgFan

5:40 PM, Aug 11, 2008

I honestly have not heard..

You should take news coming out of athletic departments with a grain of salt (as most of you know already).. They word things in a way that it has a minimal negative impact on the student athlete in situations like this. For Curtis' sake, I hope he's able to work things out and get back to Montlake as soon as possible.

I hope this more like the Sammy Straughter situation at OSU last year. He was able to come back and join the team..

Curtis' situation regarding playing time was good last year and things looked bright this year. Sounds like this had nothing to do with TW or the program. Hope his issues at home work out and he is able to come back; unlikely to be this year. A real loss especially with his speed and some experience. The raw talent at WR is still a big upgrade from the last few years.

Thank you Curtis Shaw for the time that you gave to us UW fans and thank you for coming to UW when you could have gone to so many other colleges in the US. I thank you for coming to our school and talking to the kids and give up your time in the summer to help out in our school we thank you so much. Please just keep in mind that you should always take care of your love ones like your family becuse when it is all said and done and football is over and no one even rembers your number on your shirt or knows your name; your family will be there. (God first, Family second, and UW FOOTBALL Third). We love you Curtis Shaw and I know that you will be back and you will show the state of Washingtion why you are one of a kind and the Lord will bless you always. Go Curtis Shaw!!!!

I don't think he will be coming back. I had him in my class last quarter (a class that he was repeating by the way) and he never showed up football liasons had to constantly come to class and Coach Ty even had to show upa few times. He is a great athlete but in college you are a student athlete and he wasn't able to master the student part.

Class at UW is a joke, I was a former student athlete there and I got through those classes without going more then 20% of the time and graduated with a 3.1 GPA. I'm not brilliant or anything but if you just turn in the homework you'll pass. Willingham and the athletic department checks on the young guys on the team to make sure they develop the right habits which I think is wonderful but I found that the hours in class where typically a waste of time (at least in the social sciences and psychology classes)
