New equipment deal coming?
Posted by Bob Condotta
Rumors are making the rounds that the Huskies are thinking of ditching Nike as their equipment supplier and going with another company, either Under Armour or adidas. One rumor has it that UW has already set its sights on Under Armour and that Nike is phasing out its selling of Husky merchandise.
Officially, however, nothing has yet happened and won't for a little while.
To clarify the situation, UW has had a contract with Nike since 1997, renewing it in 2001 and 2004. Under the current deal, UW gets roughly $1.1 million in product and about $210,000 in cash every year from Nike (that doesn't cover the entire budget for such items, and some UW teams also have separate deals with other companies to cover some specific apparel/equipment they need).
The deal between UW and Nike runs out July 1, 2009 and UW has already begun sending out "requests for proposals'' for companies to submit bids. The department will decide later this year which one to accept.
Some UW fans think the Huskies should align with someone other than Nike, which is headed by well-known Oregon Duck booster and alum Phil Knight.
Scott Woodward, UW's acting athletic director, said last week that would have "very little factor, if any'' in Washington's decision. "Whichever one provides the best value to the student-athlete will be the winner,'' Woodward said.
It's likely that any significant changes to logos and other such items won't happen until after the Huskies have signed a new contract.
Nike has already lost one major school this year when Michigan recently announced it had signed a new deal with Adidas. Michigan unveiled new gameday jerseys today that are a product of that new association.

The new Michigan jersys have piping on their home whites - but at least they still have the block numbers.

Block numbers - no piping!

I would absolutely love UW to hitch up with Adidas. The 3 coolest college unforms last year were Tennesee, UCLA, and Nebraska all of whom are Adidas.
Adidas unforms are by and large more progressive and creative. In contrast, Nike unis are loud and crass IMO and take away from the team's tradition.
I know this first hand because my beloved Arsenal has gone with Nike and the unis are just the pits. Liverpool, Chelsea, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Ajax have far cooler jerseys IMO. The Nike soccer jerseys may appeal to some juveniles but most soccer types prefer Adidas by a large margin.
Its great to see increasing Adidas visbility in the NCAA.

I'm with the Seaplane. Let's go totally retro. The team might then perform up to that high standard on the field. Along the same lines, why don't we start using plain English again and calling players players instead of student-athletes. I suppose this turgid term serves some purpose for the athletic department, but it starts sounding like so much politically-correct gobbleydegook. It's really irritating to listen to TW say it 10 times in 10 seconds as if it were a religious mantra. Those guys in the old uniforms were called players, and that should be good enough today. I don't know why everyone hates the dawg logo right now. I like having different uniforms represent different eras in husky football. I like seeing the team wear throwback jerseys, which wouldn't happen if we kept the same uniforms all of the time.
The UW's tradition of winning is extremely important to me, but not its tradition of uniforms. Of course, I would also hate to see UW have crazy unis like Oregon.
That being said, I would have a hard time with new helmets.

Great news!
Woodward should come out and say it though. A dollar spent on Nike is a dollar donated to the Oregon Ducks athletic department. Phil knight is so clearly and unabashedly aligned with Oregon's athletic department it makes me sick. Living in Portland I have to read about it every day. He got the Hayward field he's always wanted, he's going to get the basketball arena he always dreamed of (without actually spending an money as he somehow weaseled the Oregon taxpayers into footing that bill). All major college programs should take a good look at where they are spending their money and not support a company that so clearly cares, above all others, about the University of Oregon.
Ditch Nike!

According to the Colin Cowherd show...
The Las Vegas Sports Consultants released their over/under lines for the CFB season and they have UW pegged at 5.5 wins, with 7-8 wins very possible if we go 1-2 or 2-1 in the 1st 3 weeks.
I only mention it because these guys are scary accurate each year in this particular area.

Let's hope what happens in Las Vegas stays there, and the bookies are wrong about the 4.5 wins. Someone is going to make a lot of money betting against the line when the Huskies stun the nation by upsetting the quackers at Autzen in six short weeks. Whoever is replacing Dixon just won't be able to replace enough of him to mount the offensive onslaught we saw last year. Troy Must Be Destroyed (desultory ducks demolished)

As a Duck, I am certainly hoping that the Dawgs choose someone other than Nike. It would be such a recruiting advantage, as if we do not have one already. Second class uniforms, locker rooms, stadium, etc. Then the recruit comes to Oregon and sees a big screen tv next to his locker, state of the art video, equipment, uniforms, etc. He watches Game Day replays with Chris Fowler and Lee Corso outside of Autzen. Well, you get the point. Playing for the Ducks is a lot more exciting than wondering if your coach will be around next year. How many recruits have you guys lined up for 2009. Do you ever wonder why.

Unfortunately the Duck recruit then exits the locker room and has a look around Eugene and wonders...

I want to see a new road uniform;
White on White with Royal Purple block numbers thinly outlined in Gold.
The White pants have to have "HUSKIES" in Royal Purple block letters down the outside of the Right Leg.
I would also like to see a Royal Purple Helmet and faceguard with the Gold "W" just for the road.
This time though we HAVE to make sure that the purple on the helmet matched the purple on the uniforms.

If given the choice of Purple Helmets under Lambo and his 44-25-1 (.664) record over 6 seasons (during the near death penalty Probation Years) verses the last 5 years and Gold Helmets - well - I think we'd all take Pink right now if thats what it took.

Why not use the same color scheme and uniform style as the '91 national championship team?

In regards to the Uck colors -- your teams are outfitted in urine yellow and black (never a school color), with tire tracks on the sleeves, letters on the back that can't be read since they match the shirt color, and gold helmets that look like they were painted in a 7th grade Shop class.
Top it off with a toilet seat logo, and congratulations, you have the ugliest uniforms ever.

Mother Hucker: one who throws far. As in, Jake Locker is one crazy mother hucker!
I'm thinking they should either totally go for it and go with the throwbacks they sported last year (like the chargers and bills have done)
or, more likely, just get a bit purpler, go back to the "yellow-gold" pants and white stripes around the biceps, ala 1991. mostly just want those Gucci-bag gold pants gone. i see Babs every time I'm watching a game. gross.
getting rid of the logo goes without saying. something new (not a reissue of the previous happy Dawg) would be cool there.

Come on bro, the Happy Dawg logo was the best. So much cooler than the trying-to-be-cool weasel. Current helmets, purple jerseys with block letters, 1991-era bright gold pants, black shoes, panting Happy Dog on the scoreboard -- over a winning score.
We are on our way back, by the way. For the first time in years, there's some talent in the program. 7 win season, the coaching staff stays intact, and Locker comes back for his junior season, the easier 2009 schedule... no telling what might happen.
Go Dawgs.
By the way, not that anyone on this board needs to know this, but the University of Oregon and their traditionless, 13-year-old wet dream uniform wearing, video game in the locker room playing, never quite good enough to break through football team SUCKS.

Please, please ditch the contract with Knight University. I haven't bought a Nike item in 14 years, because of their blatant and unprofessional ties to the University of Oregon. If they want UW's money and exposure then they should shill out the same benefits (minus the nasty uniforms) to every school in Div1 that they do with the Ducks. Nike shareholders should throw a fit about the level of give-aways and cash contributions to Oregon, it's called misuse of funds..

Be careful what you ask for. Nike is clearing the top brand for athletic equipment for ALL sports - Adidas and UA can't support all of our sports teams with the same quality, performance, and look that Nike can (remember, athletes DO look at uni's in the recruiting process). Blame the administration on the ugly unis and colors - Nike, Adidas, UA have influence but don't choose the designs.
Nike has some of the most classic unis in college football - Ohio State, Penn State, OU, Texas...all those schools protect the tradition of their unis. Washington should too.
And to those uneducated enough to think that all Nike dollars support the Ducks (which btw the way our rival is WSU, not Oregon - i'm tired of giving them the "honor" of Husky fans treating them as a rival), Under Armour was founded by a Maryland Alum and is tied to the hip there. Adidas blindly supports Notre Dame (boos from UW fans)...grow up guys.

In 97 (I believe), the seniors wanted to go with white pants at home for one of their last games (maybe senior day can't remember)...it looked HORRIBLE even with the purple jerseys. It would look worse with white road jerseys. I still have nightmares of seeing the jock straps of all the OL and DL - the white pants were basically see through....

I may be one of the only ones that prefers the Nike uniforms and gear. I agree that the “ferret” logo is lame, but it’s not really used much anymore. It doesn’t appear on any uniforms. The athletic dept. transitioned to the normal “W” logo as the official logo years ago.
I don’t think we’ll see much difference in the actual team uniforms, but just the gear the coaches wear and we buy in the stores. I for one am NOT a fan of the under armour apparel (unless you like this http://s3.amazonaws.com/coolspotters2_development/photos/5002/CeF223D05d906B7d__profile.jpg ) I think what it comes down to, which company is willing to shell the most out to Udub for the rights?

I love the idea of the Dawgs wearing Adidas or Under Armour gear. Either one would be a massive improvement over Nike's quality and very suspect PR and "ownership" decisions. Phil Knight exerts more control and leverage over a university than any other individual in the country in the way that he manipulates the university of Oregon. Knight inserted one of his buddies as the AD (an insurance broker & booster with no prior experience) and is single handedly funneling millions of dollars into the coffers of our biggest rival. Most recently he pledged $150M of his own money to the Duck athletic dept on the condition that U of O officials obtain $250M in separate public financing to build a new basketball arena. None of the $150M can be spent on the arena and all of it must be spent on athletics. It's great for Duck athletics, but makes the university look like a joke and pawn in Knights goal of making U of O essentially a Nike franchise. Cannot believe Oregon residents went along with the idea ($250M is crazy money for the state, esp for only 15-25 events per year) and equally shocked that OSU fans haven't revolted against state legislators as their school won't be receiving a dime of state money.
If the Dawgs give Nike the boot it will send a strong signal to the rest of the Pac 10 and hopefully all the other schools will follow.
Go Dawgs.
