Some updated heights and weights (UPDATED)
Posted by Bob Condotta
An alert reader, uh, alerted me today that the UW's official athletic web site, GoHuskies.com, appears to be updating the heights and weights for the players on the football team.
The updates aren't on the official roster, which you can find here, but are included on each player's individual page (the school is in the process of finalizing the media guide right now so I assume these numbers are being updated as part of that work).
(UPDATE --- Since first posting this I realized I should have pointed out that it's not as if these guys all necessarily suddenly gained a lot of weight, just that the weights now are more accurate and up-to-date. A lot of the former weights simply hadn't been updated for a while. That's important to take into account before jumping to the conclusion that guys have suddenly all added 20 pounds or something. I have since also been told these are measurements that were taken in May and the school is now updating the bios to give the most accurate info. Most of the spring numbers hadn't been updated for a while.)
Most interesting are the listed weights for the offensive line, most of which are a bit higher than in the spring or last fall:
Left tackle Ben Ossai, listed at 6-6, 300 in the spring, is now listed at 6-6, 332;
Left guard Ryan Tolar, 6-5, 310 in the spring, is now 6-5, 321, while backup Jordan White-Frisbee, 6-6, 320 in the spring, is now 6-6, 368;
Center Matt Sedillo, 6-3, 300 in the spring, is now 6-3, 320 (the injured Juan Garcia is now at 305 compared to 315 in the spring).
Right guard Casey Bulyca, 6-6, 340 in the spring, is now 6-6, 339;
Right tackle Cody Habben, 6-6, 300 in the spring, is now 6-6, 316.
That's an average of 325.6 pounds for UW's probable starting five heading into the fall. The listed average for last year's line (subbing Garcia for Sedillo and Chad Macklin for Habben) was 311 though listed weights are always best regarded as estimations subject to potentially significant fluctuation, meaning it's possible the line isn't necessarily a lot bigger than last year's since it's mostly the same guys. Throw White-Frisbee in there, however, and it would definitely be bigger.
A few other interesting updates:
--- Backup guard Morgan Rosborough, listed at 365 in the spring, is now at 382;
--- WR Anthony Boyles, listed at 6-2, 195 in the spring, is now at 6-3, 195;
--- DT Cameron Elisara, 6-2, 275 in the spring, is now 6-3, 289;
--- FB Paul Homer, 6-0, 222 in the spring, is now 6-1, 239;
--- TE Chris Izbicki, 6-3, 230 in the spring, is now 6-3, 249;
--- DE Darrion Jones, 6-3, 255 in the spring, is now 6-2, 245;
--- DT Johnie Kirton, 6-4, 270 in the spring, is now 6-3, 296;
--- FB Luke Kravitz, 6-1, 245 in the spring, is now 6-0, 228;
--- DE De'Shon Matthews, 6-4, 255 in the spring, is now 6-4, 260;
--- LB E.J. Savannah, 6-2, 228 in the spring, is now 6-1, 219;
--- WR Curtis Shaw, 5-11, 190 in the spring, is now 5-10, 186.
I also notice that all players are again listed just by their academic year and not also by their year of athletic eligibility. They were listed by both in the spring after having been listed by just their academic year in 2007 (a move made after the Suddenly Senior controversy late in 2006). This means QB Jake Locker, who is a redshirt sophomore in terms of athletic eligibility, is listed simply as a junior. (And for the record, J.R. Hasty is listed on the roster and his numbers also updated --- he's now 5-10, 210 compared to 5-11, 200 in the spring).

What's up with all the shrinking guys?
And Morgan "House" Rosborough is certainly almost a duplex...382 for an O-lineman...wow!

I sure hope that this is good weight. I love the beef, but I hope its just that and not cushion for the pushin'.

JWF looks pretty solid and is quite strong...Rosborough not so much.

I don't know how JWF can gain just 48 pounds of body fat over the spring. It's probably a combination of both muscle and fat, which is very good. Rosborough on the other hand, looks like he just got fatter.

Johnie Kirton tipping the scales at almost 300 lbs! Atta boy...we'll need that size in the middle...

Well I hope Matthews stays at DE and rotates with Darrion Jones because Jones may not have the size to hold-up against the run all the time.
Nick Wood is now listed at 6'3" 299 lbs. and he's strong as an ox and I love that Elisara is up to 289 lbs. Elisara, Wood, Kirton, and Duncan will be a nice 4 man rotation with Ta'amu and Noble providing options in the fall.

If these guys are just as mobile, I like the thought of dominating the line of scrimmage. That can make up for a lack of experience when you're moving your opponent back 5 yards after the snap.
Establishing a dominating running game can control the clock, keep a young defense well rested on off the field, and ease pressure on Locker. It can be the key to a great season if it works out. Go Dawgs!

I was at the neighborhood's community pool yesterday and in walks Locker and Homer to hang out some friends of the Locker family. Not that I'm checking out dudes at the pool, but having seen Jake there a few times last summer, the kid is significantly bigger. I'm telling you, if he's not pushing 240 lbs right now, then I don't know what I'm looking at.

Obviously, something is wrong with those weights posted by UW Media Guide or Bob Condotta. UW has always tried to have the linemen in fit good shpae/weight during my time spent there. Unless, they are trying something new...

uwlb, I wouldn't be too concerned because it sounds like off-season conditioning/weight lifting participation is at its highest in years. Plus, there has been consistency in Trent Greener overseeing the workout program and Denbrock as the OL coach so I doubt guys are ballooning over the summer because they don't know who their strength coach is/will be and they don't have a new OL coach who is unfamiliar with them and doesn't know where they should be regarding weights.
The only OLman who concerns me somewhat is White-Frisbee because of his foot. I hope he can get down to 340 to 345 by fall practice because I can't recall many OLmen carrying 365+ lbs that well.

These weights are meaningless. Teams lie all the time about heights and weights. Patrick Ewing was listed as 7'0" his entire college/NBA career when he was really 6'9". If these guys really gained that much weight in a couple of months someone needs to get them on Alli.

I've saw Locker and few of the O-lineman at a buffet near Northgate in the spring.
They all looked big, but not in a fat way. They all seemed quite trim (especially if these weights are correct on the website). Locker's shoulders were HUGE, and he's definitely not packing on the pounds in any way but pure muscle.
I see this as a good sign that the team is taking their offseason conditioning seriously, and we're going to have a punishing offensive line this coming season.
Bob, how does the size of our O-lineman compare to some other Pac-10 teams?

It's all turning around slowly.
More and more of the recent recruits are getting older and setting a new tone.
The comeback is getting going!

...thought you may like to see what they're saying in South Bend...
..."So far in 2008, with just nine players, Notre Dame has already signed more four star players and more five star players than Notre Dame signed in Willingham's last two years at Notre Dame... combined. In case you want to compare notes, right now Willingham has exactly zero commitments so far at Washington. Zero."
...nice...

Unfortunately a lot of these guys are going to have serious health problems down the road. UW should be helping them lose weight, not gain it. How well can someone who carries 340++ move anyway? Some of the weight changes have to be wrong, or at least I hope so. If all else fails, some of these guys can sit on the ducks. That is, if they can catch up with them first.
Speaking of Oregon, what's its reputation for compliance with recruiting and academic eligibility requirements? Is U of O known as a clean program or one that cuts corners and covers up? Just curious if anyone has an opinon. It's always good to harbor groundless opinions of the opposition. Troy Must Be Destroyed (ducks demolished)

last report on locker was what....6-3 230...wow if hes up to 240 and ripped it could be a long season for opposing LBs...Hopefully hes on target.....cant wait to see this offense......is 40 ppg a reach? hopefully we dont give up 45 lol. I dont see a donatel D giving up that much or these weights are gonna drop a significant amount with all the running drills after loses!

There's a trend over the past 5 decades of players, especially linemen, getting bigger & bigger, & it doesn't appear to have topped out yet. I can remember seeing a 280 lb lineman & thinking he was a giant.

I updated the post a bit since I should have made it clear initially that most of these numbers are the first updates in a year or so. So it's not as if these guys have all gained 40 pounds since the spring, just that the measurements --- taken in May --- are more reflective of where they have gotten to in the last year. The numbers are typically only updated once or twice a year.
Also, comparing to teams of even eight years ago isn't really going to tell you much since all teams are getting bigger these days. More accurate would be a comparison to other Pac-10 teams. That would probably be best done in a month or two when teams release their fall media guides, which would have the most up-to-date heights and weights.

A few quickies:
I'm delighted to see Elisara getting bigger. I have high hopes for his UW career. I'm equally thrilled to see we have some size along the D-line. If the Huskies can have a big improvement here, perhaps there is some hope of a decent D in '09.
As for the O-line, I would be more interested in knowing body fat%, quickness drills, and strength numbers. I love seeing the man mountains across the front, but I sure hope they're packing muscle and not flab. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and commend them on working hard. (I hope.) If nothing else, maybe the line can platoon a bit to keep them fresh. Having better depth in the program should really help (especially in the 2nd half.) It can't be easy moving around 350 pounds for a full game! A rotation makes a lot of sense at several positions in my opinion.
Finally, the Tedford thing is interesting. (From yesterday, I think.) I will say, as a guy who went to Cal's rival, the weenies are not exactly textbook fans nor does the institution pour out support for the football team. Talk about a bunch of pot smokin', tree huggin', ultra-libs! Seriously, I think Tedford could be running into a buzzsaw of frustration if he thinks he's going to get a lot of support for building facilities and pumping money into the program. My understanding is that right now they are having battles over any kind of stadium work because there are lawsuits being filed to protect a handful of trees which would have to be removed! As a coach trying to build a national powerhouse, I imagine he has bigger things to worry about than a group of trees being trimmed or cut down! At any rate, I'll be curious to see if he sticks around. Frankly, knowing what he's up against politically down there, I am a little surprised he hasn't already packed it in! While they do have some loyal and rabid fans, the majority of the folks going to games wouldn't blink an eye if the program fell back into disarray. It's just not even close to a priority down there.

I sure hope White-Frisbee and Rosborough aren't really that heavy, I don't see how they can contribute that much at that weight. Either that or they both lose 40 lbs between now and the start of the season. There's big and then there's too big...

Gabe,
Excellent point.
ESPN outside the lines did a great story about 10 years ago on the tons of eating disorders and health problems that former college football players and wrestlers have.
It is quite disturbing. There are also some disturbing discussion boards out there by ex-atheletes.
Society forgets about the ex-lineman and wrestlers after their eligbility goes. Kind of swept under the rug.

JWF is now 368 pounds?
My God. His poor foot. Yikes.
That is a 15% hike in weight since the spring.
