Savannah breaks arm, out two-three months
Posted by Bob Condotta
Some bad news for the Huskies today as school officials confirmed that linebacker E.J. Savannah recently broke the humerus bone in his left arm in a non-football-related incident on Saturday night.
Team trainers say this is an injury that typically requires two-to-three months to fully recover, so that means Savannah could miss Washington's season opener on Aug. 30 at Oregon.
The humerus bone is the long bone that runs from the shoulder to the elbow. One source indicated Savannah was injured while arm-wrestling.
Savannah, an outside linebacker, was UW's leading tackler last season with 111 tackles and has been named to a few pre-season all-conference teams. Savannah was suspended for the first half of spring practice for missing a few off-season workouts, but came back to lead the team in the spring game with eight tackles.
His loss for even a game or two could be a big blow for a UW team that faces a tough early schedule in what looms as a make-or-break year for head coach Tyrone Willingham. After the Oregon game, UW hosts BYU and Oklahoma, each likely to be highly-ranked.
Savannah, a junior, figures to be a key part of the plans of new defensive coordinator Ed Donatell, who has said he might use some 3-4 defensive schemes to take advantage of the team's depth at linebacker. But losing Savannah would obviously curtail that depth for a while. Savannah was replaced in the early part of spring drills by walk-on Joshua Gage, with Trenton Tuiasosopo and Donald Butler sharing the middle and Mason Foster starting at the other outside spot.

Ed Donatell says he may run a 3-4 to take advantage of our depth at LB. Athlon's tells the nation our LB's are the worst in the conference - who ya gonna believe?? I take the coach!!! Get well EJ.

Are you freakin' kidding me?? Why all the lousy luck? I say put in Chris Stevens. He plays outside doesn't he?? Besides he's fast and has a good head for the game from what I've seen.

Injured while arm-wrestling?
That is one strong arm-wrestling opponent. Sign him up for DL.

It might take 2-3 months to recover, but can he play with a cast on? I know it is more serious than a broken wrist. Will the cast go over his elbow?

Can't play with a full arm cast. tough spot to break your arm...

twalker,
humerus is between elbow and shoulder. Sometimes, they have to pin it.
I imagine the cast extends well above the shoulder.
I suspect he will lose a fair amount of strength and conditioning and be trying to catch-up all season to what he could have been, unless he takes a medical redshirt year. Very poor timing.
Curious what the trainers say. Most unfortunate.

Well if he did push him out of a tree house, I'm sure EJ fell right into Ty's doghouse.

twalker,
ignore my earlier speculation. Apparently I did not know what I was talking about.
From the following link: http://orthopedics.about.com/od/brokenbones/a/humerus.htm
'What is the treatment for a humerus fracture?
The good news is that most humerus fractures will heal without surgery. The majority of patients can be treated with a sling or brace, and with time the fracture will heal. Casting is not possible with most types of humerus fractures.
Surgery may be required when the bone fragments are far out of position. Determining when the alignment is acceptable depends on a number of factors. Fractures close to the shoulder and elbow joints, especially fractures that extend into the joint, are more likely to require surgery. Conversely, fractures in the center of the shaft of the bone rarely require surgery, even with the bone fragments appear not perfectly aligned."
So...presumably there will be no cast, just a sling/brace.

Bob..
If Donatells gonna play more 3-4 why wouldn't we use Kavario to play the Demarcus Ware/Shaun Merriman role, oh yeah I forgot Losinghams gonna play him at TE..

No way E.J.'s going to play until that injury is healed. This will just give someone else an opportunity. Don't understand all the criticism for this kid. He was acting jiust like a football player is supposed to act.. They all do this stuff. You think they play chess or croquette in the offseason? Rumor is he was arm wrestling with his sister. So someone else will have an opportunity to play. Troy Must Be Destroyed.
P.S. I thought someone on this blog made a good case a few months ago that UW doesn't have the personnel to play 3-4 because Teo-N isn't big enough. If so, maybe this presumptive one game loss is even less a set back because UW would put only 3 linebackers out there anyway.

What a great package deal with Savannah and Hasty. One can't get on the field because of grades, and the other makes not so smart decisions. Hurt arm wrestling??? I sure question the common sense and committment these 2 have. I'm beginning to think these aren't the two sharpest knives in the drawer.

Can someone explain to me how you'd break that bone while arm wrestling? Torn ligaments, rotator cuff -- those make sense. I can't conceive of the mechanics that would result in that injury. Thanks.

naterob4,
Middleton wants to play TE.
Nate Williams wanted to play RB last year, then he changed his mind.
Personally I kind of like football coaches who let you have some say in what position you are going to play, and tend not to make fun of their name and insert the word "losing"' into it. I alsoI find it hard to fault such a coach for letting the #2 TE recruit in the country choose to play TE in college, especially on a team that had NO production from their TE's last year.
But hey, that's just me. I might be in left field.

Bob,
can you post a link to your entry on projected LB line-ups that you had on the blog a few months ago?
Do you see Mangum getting on the field with this injury?
Thanks.

jeremy stevens, maby Ty should start recruiting more Bellevue kids. He missed out on the highly intelligent David Decastro and lost out big on missing Stephen Schilling who's gone onto Michigan starting as a freshman and websites like scout.com gave him 2nd team all-america honors. too bad Ty missed those guys.

Arm wrestling puts enormous torque/twist on the upper arm's humerus bone to a degree seen in few other physical activities. Most people's bones are not accustomed to being significantly stressed in this direction, and injuries can occur surprisingly easily. The arm typically fails because of a diagonal break at or below the midpoint between the shoulder and the elbow.
The natural tendency of an inexperienced arm wrestler is to push the hand, wrist, and shoulder in the same coordinated direction, against the force being applied by the opponent. This is how we throw a baseball or hit a tennis ball.
However, turning one's shoulder this way simply adds to the torque already being applied to the humerus by the opponent. US Arm Sports advises of the danger of "letting your shoulder get inside your hand." It is better to pivot your shoulders so that you never look away from your hand.

Well crap.
At least its his left arm, and not the right arm (likely his stronger arm in tackling).
I imagine he is embarrassed and upset at himself for the injury, especially so close to the start of the season. No need to be hard on the guy.
I'm happy that we have Stevens just behind him on the depth chart. He is a playmaker, and has made some great and unexpected plays in the last two seasons.
Heal quick EJ!

Olydawg,
If he really broke it arm-wrestling, I imagine he is a lefty. I don't see people arm-wrestling with their non-dominant arms.

"I don't see people arm-wrestling with their non-dominant arms."
Really? Never heard someone boast that they could beat you left-handed.
Happened to me in the third grade. A reclusive nerd named Patrick was kicking everyone's ass in chess. When nobody would accept his challenge Patrick offered to play left-handed.
Of course, as Gabe points out, real football players don't sit around playing chess. Patrick was no football player. First day of freshman football tryouts Patrick was sent home when he showed up wearing his own helmet and jersey--one of those plastic Dallas Cowboy helmets and a Staubach jersey. After high school Patrick went off to a monastery on some island in the middle of the mediteranean sea. I ran into Patrick at a book store 25 years later. Asked why he left the monastery, Patrick replied, "I got lonely."

Losing and anchor on offense (Garcia) and an anchor on defense (Savannah) is a blow. Let's hope some players step up to fill the holes and that these guys get healthy!

Hurting your off-arm seems more likely, as you would probably have your shoulder out of position trying to overcompensate.

The reason I would want to see Middleton at DE/OLB did you see our DEFENSE last year?? enough said, and we just got the kid from Ldub last year and he was a top 100 player as well, and look at all the weapons we have on O..
Posted by John
4:14 PM, Jun 04, 2008
Naterob: Middleton wants to play tight end. It's his choice.
And the only proven weapon we have on offense is Locker, so that argument doesn't work.
Posted by Formerly Guest
4:22 PM, Jun 04, 2008
Naterob4,
Yes, I saw our defense last yr. I also think our O has a lot of questions regarding skill players. As I mentioned before, we got really nothing out of the TE position last yr.
Hopefully Izbicki is great. Many people project Middleton as tons better, but you never know until you line them up side by side.
Again, I find it hard to fault a coaching staff for letting a player play the position THEY WANT TO PLAY when they are the #2 ranked recruit at that position in the entire country and we had the least production of any conference team at that position last yr. (Granted that was Izbicki's redshirt year). (I also wonder if Middleton would want to come here if he wasn't going to get a shot at his preferred position).
We could move Izbicki to DE/LB as some on this board have discussed. My guess, from what people say, is Middleton is probably going to be better than Izbicki at TE, and/or at DE/LB.
Personally I hope they are both great where ever they end up.
Some people say we should have moved Jake Locker to safety. He wanted to play QB. I think he could have contributed at safety immediately, don't you?
