A.D. update, more

Posted by Bob Condotta

Though again, not that there's really much to update --- not much that has leaked publicly, anyway.

What we know for sure is that it's almost July and the Huskies are still without a permanent A.D. in place, which has led to a few rumors about what is really going on, the latest being that maybe acting athletic director Scott Woodward will just take it over, after all.

Woodward, however, says that's news to him. "Not as far as I know of,'' he said when I asked him today if there was any truth to that rumor.

Woodward, who became the acting AD on Jan. 31 after Todd Turner resigned under pressure, announced on May 1 that he wouldn't pursue the job full-time.

It's important to remember why he said he wouldn't do so --- that he was mostly acceding to the wishes of president Mark Emmert, who said he thought Woodward was more valuable in his current day job as the school's VP of external relations. In that role, Woodward could still continue to help the athletic department by leading the effort in Olympia to secure funding for a renovation of Husky Stadium (his background is primarily in politics). So it wasn't really Woodward saying he didn't want the job, but that he was being a team player and going along with how he and Emmert felt he could best serve the school.

He has several times since then said that he would "never say never'' to the possibility of re-emerging as a candidate for the AD's job, one reason the rumor that he will eventually be named to that position persists. He said a few weeks ago that if Emmert approached him about it, he'd definitely consider it.

But Woodward insisted today that nothing has changed since his May 1 announcement.

"The president and I have not talked about it,'' he said.

Woodward said he is otherwise "keeping an arm's length'' from the search and isn't involved in the process. The school has formed a 14-person search committee but the choice will ultimately be that of Emmert. The school also paid $75,000 to enlist the services of Parker Executive Search to help out, and the UW job remains listed on the firm's web site under current opportunities.

Sources have also indicated that several candidates have been contacted, with a couple conversations apparently having gotten pretty serious (I detailed all of that in this post here last week).

For what it's worth, Bill Moos continues to have nothing to say about the UW situation. Not that anyone else has had much to say, either, as the school continues to have no official comment on the search other than to acknowledge that it is ongoing.

BRUINS TAKE HIT ON O-LINE --- Also, in case you hadn't heard about this, UCLA announced today that redshirt sophomore OT Sean Sheller will miss the season after having been injured while driving an ATV recently. Sheller was the projected starter at right tackle, a spot he took over when starter Aleksey Lanis left the team in April due to a knee injury. Meaning, UCLA will be down to what a little while ago was its No. 3 RT (possibly freshman Mike Harris).

First...

And, I'm just going to put on my damn tool belt, grab a hammer and a shovel, and start the stadium renovation myself. I'll be there Saturday with some drawings on a napkin. Feel free to join me. it's time something actually happened. I'm tired of all the talk.

A nice article on ESPN.com about Juan Garcia. I sure hope the guy heals up and gets a well deserved shot at the NFL. He's probably the Husky I'll be rooting for the most in 2008. (Even if he never suits up again for UW.)

I really think UCLA will only win 5 or 6 games as one of their biggest issues before Sheller going down was their OL and they'll probably go 1-2 in their OOC schedule and there's a decent chance they could go 1-3 or 0-4 on the road...that coaching staff will really have to earn their pay-checks this year.

we need to beat ucla this year at home. They seem to be the one school that always gives us trouble. They could put in their 2nd team water polo squad and still scare the sh@!t out of us. Ricky will have them pumped for this game..... guaranteed.

Bob,
Whats the bigger waste of University money, paying this research firm to help with the AD search or paying for us to play in the CBI??? The job is listed on the internet, they might as well just put an ad on Craigslist..

For a new AD the UW should probably wait until after Nov. elections, if Gov. Gregoire wins, then think about hiring a north American native for the AD job.....so long as he ,she, has casino connection that is.... might even get the stadium rebuild, with a little grease!!!!

Anybody on this blog ever stayed at the Phoenix inn suites in Eugene? Were staying there Aug. 29th and 30th, is the place a dump or what?? My girl booked the place, but I'm not staying in some dump..Where are most people staying at in Eugene, it would be nice to go to the game in a group rather than filtering in and having to take a chance with the dumb a** Duck fans who by 7pm will be beyond drunk...this could get ugly.

i'm beginning to feel like the uw should go the way of those soulless oregon ducks and hire a big booster. look, the athletic departments are big business, and often, the success of that business is directly correlated to success on the field.
therefore: the next board of regents candidate who also happens to be a huge tyee donor should be offered the job with a huge salary provided 70-80% is donated back to the university providing the a.d. with a tax break and the athletic department with a 400k in savings on a director's salary.

these guys will know how to run a business... let them run one they've already thrown a million of their own dollars into already.

firety.....you're honestly staying in Eugene?...by choice? You ever spent the night in a cow barn? Picture that, but downgrade it a tad....with all the cows smoking weed too.

Firety,

The Phoenix is only okay, but it may be one of the better options, particularly when you factor in it's location. It is only about a 15 minute walk to the stadium, and is only about a 5 minute walk FROM the Steelhead Brewpub (okay beer, many TV's with other college FB's going on).

When I stayed there I had no hot water in my room (obviously, that couldn't have lasted long), and my bed was slightly sloped. That being said, it looked like one of the better options.

Going to Eugene, staying at the Phoenix inn...WOW!
You must be a adventurous soul, the Marines could use you.
Number (1), take bug spray for your mattes, and the hippies, (2) try not to touch anything, (3) take your own food, (4) don't give the hippies spear change, other than that you should be O.K.?

In Eugene we'll be staying at the Hilton.

It was a tad pricey, but having not been to Eugene before, I wasn't in the mood to experiment with a total dive just based upon cost.

My brother and I are going with some buddies. I'll either call the table bed in there RV or I will be sleeping in the back of my bronco with the top off of it. There is no way I'd stay in a hotel in that town. I am a little scared about the scene there. I've never been there, but have heard the horror stories (even at a national press level i.e. Kevin Love this past year) and I'm scared of getting into a huge fight or something. That being said, I'll turn up the volume tolerance for a bit and let them talk S, and just have a great feeling at the end of the game when I look at the score board.

I will sing the fight song when it's all over and will make haste back to the group to drink in celebration.

i think it is funny, the same people here complaining what a farm town eugene is are the same fans bitching about east coast bias for sports and people thinking it always rains in seattle. try not to have the same ignornace you despise in different context.

as a duck, I'll be kind enough to share some local knowledge.

the phoenix is one of the newer hotels in Eugene. it is fine, you get what you'd expect. however, this is right in the middle of campus, fraternity row (what's left) bars, sem-dive eateries, shortest walk to the game. hell of a nice walk for anyone that has actually done it.

valley river inn is probably the best hotel, generally where the players stay. it's a bit outside of campus (not walking distance), fairly good sized mall right there, red robin's of the world etc...If you are not wanting to be in Duckville, on campus with the sutdents and drunks, this is a good place.

hilton - downtown eugene. definately tired hotel, but walking disatance to the better breweries/restaurants and to campus. 6th st. Grill is a good spot across the street, but this is for sure packed with Ducks. I will be there.

respect works both ways. at Husky stadium, I am a guest at someone else's house, and act accordingly. any Husky fan doing the same would not have a problem, there are of course exceptions to the rule in any city.

need any other advice?

The mud slinging towards duck fans is more than earned. For starters, as a duck fan, why are you even here.? But that aside, the behavior of duck fans over the years and the obnoxious posts on here have more than justified some pretty intense hatred toward the ducks.

Using your analogy, if UW fans went on some east coast blog to act like obnoxious idiots, then I'd rather expect some heat coming back our way. But as is typical with duck fans, your logic is completely flawed. Moreover, I don't even see how your analogy makes much of any sense at all.

Furthermore, you don't like reading a bunch of duck slamming? Then don't come here. I'd say 90% of the really nasty stuff said about duck fans is a direct response to something said or done by a duck fan. So, don't keep coming on here to start stuff, and maybe you won't read a bunch of nasty stuff.

But that being said... eugene and the nike ducks really do suck. So, perhaps we'd still sit here talking about what a crap hole town you have and what a bunch of toothless morons make up your fan base! Buh - bye.

Better DUck,

Got a question for you.

What was the general feeling by Duck fans when the team played Dixon, with torn ACL, at UA?

It was an interesting dilemma they were in, and I am wondering how the decision to let him play was received by the fans.

Thanks.

FG - Ducks fans thought it was sneaky for sure, coaches knew a lot more then what was in the media clearly. That's about the only gripe.

Most feel it was Dixon's call to make (with his family) as a Sr. QB, leading the Heisman race, in the BCS championship hunt, hard to sit him if he wants to play.

He was going to need ACL surgery either way, so if he blew it out completely or not, not much difference in the end result (surgery) and there wasn't really a bigger long term risk playing on it.

He did bolt right into the end zone, straight ahead albeit, so he didn't look that bad, wasn't like he came out in a wheel chair. Even after seeing him go down, the move he made looked like he could have fully torn the ACL even on a 100% healthy knee.

Realtiy Check - that name gets funnier by the minute. It's my blog, mine, mine mine. Try to open your mind beyond husky nation my friend. smoke and pass please.

Ummm. I fail to see what you're driving at with your misguided comments again. Here's a simple analogy.

There's a blog about gardening. Some idiot comes on to talk about cars. The folks who want to talk about gardening get a little tired of the moron talking about cars. Can you get it? Take the frustration level and multiply it by 100x and maybe it will sink in. Or perhaps a better analogy would be if some guy who hates gardening comes on for no other reason than to say gardening and gardeners suck. Can you possibly see how that might be viewed as obnoxious, antagonistic, and uncalled for. Moreover, you make my point for me. Duck fans are jerks and obnoxious.

It's a HUSKY blog. It's not a duck blog. We don't care what you think. So go away. You're obnoxious, your comments bring no value, and you are annoying. What's worse, your comments don't even make sense. In short, I don't mind other opinions if they have some merit, bring some interesting angle, or offer some entertainment value. You and other duck fans come on here for no other reason to be obnoxious @$$holes. It's a shame you can't get it.

WHICH IS IT?

I know - only if you agree with your rant are you allowed, nice clubhouse rules, not sure Bob would agree. I like this blog because it goes beyond just UW football as Bob posts many things that are in general to Pac-10 football.

Do you know Ciscoe Morris:? Seem to know a lot about gardening. I am done for the day, need to shine up my A8.
