Official APR numbers released
Posted by Bob Condotta
The NCAA this morning released the official APR (Academic Progress Rate) numbers for the 2006-07 season, and as reported here earlier, Washington State's football program will take the hardest hit of any Pac-10 school, while the Huskies have charted above-average numbers for both football and men's basketball.
WSU's football team will be restricted to 22 initial scholarships this year and 77 overall due to a multi-year APR of 916 (here's the link to the WSU team page here). WSU is the only Pac-10 school to lose football scholarships. UPDATE --- Here's a Times story on the WSU situation.
Washington had an APR of 948 for football and 943 for basketball, both solidly above the NCAA's goal of 925 for every school, which it says equates to a graduate rate of 60 percent. Here is a breakdown of UW's scores. The NCAA Division-I average was 928 for basketball and 934 for football.
Here are the Pac-10 football APR numbers in order:
Stanford 986
Cal 967
Washington 948
USC 948
UCLA 941
Arizona State 933
Oregon State 926
Oregon 921
Washington State 916
Arizona 902
As you can see, Arizona has a lower APR than does WSU. However, penalties are not levied strictly on the number. As the NCAA release says "teams that score below 925 and have a student leave school academically ineligible can lose up to 10 percent of their scholarships.'' Meaning, more than simply the score is taken into account when doling out penalties. UPDATE --- Here's a good explanation of WSU's situation from the Spokesman-Review noting that WSU lost eight scholarships because it had eight players depart who were not in good academic standing at a time when the overall score was below 925.
USC is the only Pac-10 school that will lose scholarships for basketball as it will be limited to 11 next season due to an APR of 863.
The only other Pac-10 school being hit in any sport is Arizona for men's indoor track.
Here is a full explainer of the APR from the NCAA web site. And here's a good Q-and-A about it.

Thanks Bob,
So it looks like WSU initially had 27 signees for the class of 2008 according to rivals.com but now the WSU athletic dept website lists 22 - the same number as you give above. Does that mean that 5 kids lost scholarships? And how does a coach decide which scholarships to pull?

Hsky69 --- Good questions. I would point out they officially signed 24 on LOI Day, including five JC guys. The JC guys can count backward depending on when they enroll, as has happened with some UW guys the past few years, as well. So that could be it. I'm not sure they are taking scholarships away from anyone. It sounds as if they knew for a while this was likely. I'll pass along more on this as it becomes available. With the numbers becoming official today there should be more clarity coming.

Sorry Bob, you explain it quite well in your write up. Yes early entry & course completion is a major point.

Bob,
Is there a website where you can look up results for all NCAA schools? Thanks.

E --- Here's a link to the school-by-school reports:
http://www.ncaa.org/wps/portal/home?WCM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=/wps/wcm/connect/NCAA/Academics+and+Athletes/Education+and+Research/Academic+Reform/APR/2006-07_School_APR_Data_J5lt9A.html
One note --- the NCAA uses the formal school titles, so Arizona is under University of Arizona, etc.

Is this why Ty seems to be trying to get JR to quit the team? Does this come into play when a coach has to decide if a player loses a scholarship?

Bob,
Are there any walk on players who have stood out as possible contributors next year?

WHy is it that WSU's hoops program has such a low score? The Bennets have been there for awhile now.
How is it that Jim Sterk isn't under a load of pressure to quit. Todd Turner was pushed out after presiding over a far more successful program than Sterk's.
With this academic probation, off-field football problems, failed Doba, Heffernen, and Marbut hires, unglamorous WUlff and Daugherty hires how does he survive?
Is he the teflon AD?

Jamaal --- WSU had a lot of turnover early on in the Bennett era, and remember, the APR is a four-year average, so in this case, that's the first four years of the Bennett era since this year isn't included. As for Sterk, how do you know he's not?

Bob,
Are you saying that Sterk is feeling the heat?
One has not read anything to that affect in the papers. One does recall reading about the pressure Todd was under.
Would please clarify any information you have on this.
Thanks.

I'm not saying he is, just saying how do you know he's not. The premise of the question is that all of this has happened and nobody there cares. I would imagine they do, but not being close to the situation I don't really know. So I'm just asking how this person knows Sterk is under no heat.

Bob--
So, are you saying WSU doesn't care about all of this?

I'm sure they do care. Just saying I'm not close enough to it to really comment. And I was asking how the person who says Sterk isn't under any heat for any of this knows he's not? I'm not saying he is. But the question made a declarative statement that he's not, so wondering how the questioner knows that.

I do not believe that Sterk in under pressure because there has been no mention of this in my ever trusted Seattle Times. I am given to understand that the Seattle Times does a commendable job of keeping tabs on the community pulse and presenting information in a fair and objective manner. Furthermore, there has been no mention of the same when highly knowledgeable and widely respected WSU insiders accept invitations to share their views on the state of WSU athletics/academics and/or the lack thereof.

What a joke - they take away 8 scholorships from a sad sack losing program but let all the big boys - who cheat on a whole different level - off scott free. Orwellian.

Regardless of who cheats in terms of recruiting, it's interesting to see that the real universities are at the top, while the junior colleges (Pullman CC) are at the bottom.

As long as public schools are compelled to share documents upon request (due to the freedom of information act) while private schools can tell investigators to get bent, we'll never see a level playing field. As an example, USC is running a circus down there, but they never get busted. How do you prove anything when they can just tell anyone seeking the information to go to hell? Somehow the NCAA, reporters, etc. need to get equal access to private institutions. Otherwise, we'll continue to see public schools get nailed while private schools get away with murder! (Or at least taking hundreds of thousands of dollars during college -- ahem... Reggie for example?)

"What do those people say about why he's not?"
They don't specifically say anything. They turn red and seem agitated...and then conclude the dialogue by saying huskies suck and purple = gay.
After a few hours of hard drinking the conversation invariably shifts to weasals, camaros and a beverage called zima.
Hope that was insightful
