Here's a good wrapup of all that happened at the Football Forum from Yahoo.com.
The front page features a picture of Tyrone Willingham, which as one poster pointed out is the second time in a week UW has been highlighted on Yahoo's sports page (Jake Locker last week).
Speaking of the Football Forum, a writer for The Bleacher Report has this take on Willingham's comments on race being a factor in hiring college football coaches. (I'm somewhat hesitant to pass along a story on Willingham by an anonymous writer with a ND bent for all the obvious reasons. But seeing as how I figure someone will pass it along anyway, here you go).
The author, whoever he or she is, points out that Willingham has never hired a minority as a coordinator as head coach at Notre Dame and Washington (and if the writer had done deeper research, I think he/she would have found that was also the case at Stanford). But to be fair to Willingham, the author should also have pointed out that Willingham did try this year, making a well-publicized attempt to lure DeWayne Walker away from UCLA. (So well-publicized that The Sporting News called it a done deal for days).

Willingham also tried to hire Michael Haywood as his offensive coordinator at Washington.

Emmert told Willingham to make the attempt. I doubt it was 100% TW's idea.

jh, that's the same article as Bob linked to in his article. I don't agree there is a prevelant opinion regarding Willingham; I don't see it here and I'm in a pretty solid college football area. Also, how could anyone with half a brain miss the fact TW recruited DeWayne Walker? The article also fails to mention how many open recs TW had for coordinators. Shoddy reporting, but par for the course for an ND apologist.
"Emmert told TW to make the attempt" - really? Is that verified?

...are you saying that the football world believes that willingham's career has been good for minority hiring?...is THAT verified?...

You need a source for that, Mello. Unless you expect us to believe you know what you're talking about.

We will be a lot better off when we acknowledge that the color of a man's skin is one of his least significant features - what is critical is what's in his mind, or heart, whatever you want to call it.
When it comes to sports, the only color that matters is the color of the uniform he puts on. . . .

Willingham has never hired a minority as a coordinator as head coach at Notre Dame and Washington. Period. Trying is not an excuse.
His Grade for that is an F. Grade for Effort = D, he didn't get it done.

John,
Think about it. Tyrone Willingham stuck with Kent Baer for 13 years because he is a loyal friend. Even the 1999 Stanford Rose Bowl team, a Kent Baer defense, had one of the worst statistical defenses in the nation....but Willingham stuck with him.
There was so much heat on Ty this offseason to get rid of Baer, but he could have done that at any point during his career. Winning football was not a priority at Stanford so he didn't worry about it. Winning WAS a priority at Notre Dame, but they took the easy route and just fired Willingham flat out.
There's a difference here at Washington. We want to win, but we're not Notre Dame and we don't have their attitude. The Typologists said they were willingham to excuse Ty if he would throw Baer under the bus and look for other assistants. It may not have been directly Emmert, but it was certainly Todd Turner who likely told Ty that he was gone if he still refused to make changes.
It wasn't some stroke of football genius that woke up Ty. He had stuck with Baer for 13 years and would have if he hadn't felt pressure from the administration this past offseason.

Pressure to get rid of Baer does not equal pressure to hire a specific candidate. Unless you have real reason to believe that Willingham wasn't allowed to choose his DC then stop making the claim.

Willingham, without having to do the dirty work himself, played the race card to keep his job at Washington. Bob Condotta, is this true? and if it is , we have a MAJOR problem at the UW.

Wrong 999. Simmons tried to play the race card and it failed so he was sent packing with Baer. Simmons and Baer were lazy recruiters and it is great to have the dead weight gone.
It is clear you don't like Willingham but at least get your facts or rumors right.

Qoute from the "Bleacher Report"
"But this isn’t just one data point. Willingham’s pattern of blame has continued at Washington. Last year, Willingham’s job was all but over after Washington President Mark Emmert had decided to go in a new direction. Again, Willingham, without having to do the dirty work himself, played the race card.
Athletic Director Todd Turner intervened, lining up power brokers while James Bible, president of the Seattle-King County NAACP, requested a meeting with Emmert to discuss "the value of Coach Willingham to this community."
The Turner/Willingham end-around forced Emmert’s hand.Willingham won again"
It wasn't Simmons or Baer. It evident "The Truth" that your a TW lover. When it comes to fact , TW lovers can's stand the truth.

John,
You're missing the point. I realize the original question was whether or not he was pressured to hire Walker and in regards to that, I can't say I have facts or rumors.
However, he would have never even considered hiring ANYONE if Emmert and/or Turner hadn't come down on him. Does that make sense? See, Kent Baer is awful but he would have stuck with him if no one had approached him and said "you are fired if you don't make changes."
The report that bigdawgdaddy posted is well-known, but to all the Typologists, it's just heresay and a conspiracy theory.

...here's the actual link about willingham being a detriment to minority that BOB fought so hard to keep away from you...

...as you will see...it is an opinion prevalent in football America - with the exception of the Northwest...
