Locker baseball debut June 6
Posted by Bob Condotta
I spent part of the morning at the Experimental Education Unit at the University of Washington, observing as a group of six Husky football players read books, built towers and otherwise hung out with a couple of sets of Kindergarten classes --- the classes are a mix of typically developing and developmentally disabled kids.
I'll have more on that in a story that will run in Thursday's newspaper. The visits are part of the team's annual "Blitz The Sound'' community outreach event. Almost every player on the roster will take part in a visit to a local elementary or middle school over the next two days.
Among the UW football players at the stop I visited was quarterback Jake Locker, and when I caught up to him afterward, I also slipped in a quick question about his summer plans.
Locker said he will make his debut with the Bellingham Bells of the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League on June 6 (here are details on the league from a past story on Locker's decision to play for the team).
The Bells open the season at home with a three-game set June 6-7-8 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham and Locker said he plans to play in all three games. The games Friday and Saturday begin at 7 p.m. and the Sunday game at 4 p.m. (here's some ticket info and here's a schedule.)
The Bells play the Everett Merchants on Friday and Sunday and the Langley Blaze on Saturday.
Otherwise, Locker said he will make up his schedule in two-week increments and has no idea how many games he will end up playing for the Bells, having said all along he will work his baseball schedule around his football commitments.
"I'm going to go on a two-week basis and sit down with the coaches (of the Bells) and say 'okay, I can make it to this one, I can't make it to this one,''' he said. "Whatever that number (of games for the season) ends up being at the end of the summer is where it ends up.''
Still, he sounds enthused to play again. He noted that the June 6 game is also his grandmother's birthday "so she is excited.''
He said he's been fitting in a little baseball along with his football workouts to prepare for the season.
"I've been hitting a little bit, taking some fly balls,'' he said. "I've got to take some more fly balls because I'm a little out of sync there. Hopefully it will all come back to me.''
