BYU focusing on defense
Posted by Bob Condotta
Had the Huskies not moved their game at Oregon to Aug. 30, they would have opened the season at home against BYU.
Instead, the BYU game comes second for UW, on Sept. 6 at Husky Stadium.
And that looms as just as dicey a contest for the Huskies as the Oregon game as the Cougars return 13 starters from a team that went 11-2 last season and will be a consensus top 20 pick heading into 2008.
BYU began spring practice this week focusing on rebuilding a defense that returns just four starters.
Here's a good breakdown of BYU as it enters the spring from the Provo Daily Herald.
And here is a bit more on BYU beginning the spring:
--- A preview with more on the efforts to rebuild the defense.
--- Another story that quotes BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall as saying he thinks the defensive line is in good shape but there will be a lot of open jobs elsewhere on defense.
--- A story on BYU moving one of its tight ends to linebacker to fill in the gaps there.
--- More on the opening of spring, with BYU hoping to tweak a few things offensively, as well.
BYU plays Northern Iowa at home the week before it comes to Seattle, so the Cougars will probably be able to save a few things for the Huskies. Interestingly, the week after playing the Huskies, BYU hosts UCLA and new Bruins coach Rick Neuheisel.
