Bonnell heading overseas
Posted by Bob Condotta
Former Washington quarterback Carl Bonnell is continuing his football career in a rather unlikely locale --- Austria.
Bonnell has agreed to play for the Hohenems Blue Devils of the Austrian Football League and is already in Europe with the season due to begin March 29. His brother, Ray, who played football at Washington State, will be a player-coach for the team, serving as defensive coordinator. Ray Bonnell coached in the same league a couple of years ago.
Here's the home page for the league and here's some information on Hohenems, a small town in western Austria.
Bonnell's father, Glenn, said Carl plans to return home in May to participate in a combine for prospective NFL free agents with the hope of getting invited to a camp but will then also have the option of returning to Austria.
Anyone who wants to know the type of experience Bonnell may be in for in Austria should read the recent
best-selling John Grisham book "Playing for Pizza'' which described a fictional season in the Italian Football League.
Carl Bonnell graduated with a degree in history and is touring Europe with his wife, Katie, until play starts in Austria.
"They took a second honeymoon,'' Glenn Bonnell said. "He's having fun.''

IslandDawgFan -- Bob's 2-deep was only including players that will be there for spring football (i.e., returning players and those that enrolled early). Since Ta'amu and Noble are both incoming freshmen that didn't enroll early they won't be around until fall camp.

playing for pizza is the worst $8 you'll ever spend on a book... grisham should stick to legal thrillers because that booked sucked arse.
bonnell going to "austria" to play football... well, the whole todd turner academics/experience priority is really paying off.
look, i'm glad for carl if he's getting to continue to play, but let's just be honest here.... there IS a place to prioritize football in colleges and turner's lame-O mandate doesn't wash... even if we come in last place, why are our players going to austria to play football vis-a-vis becoming rhodes scholars?

Mick,
Were you an Italian major?

Tyrone should be sending thank you cards to Bonnell every day for saving his job. Imagine how much hotter the heat would be on Tyrone if Bonnell didn't pull out the Apple Cup in 2006 and Cal in 2007. Good luck to Bonnell. Good riddance to Tyrone.

Actually, the book is a great, light, read and Grisham does a great job of describing the football action and the players- I had the opportunity to catch a couple of games when I was stationed over there and its incredibly fun, passionate football.
Bonnell will have a great time, and given his passing skills and cool head, I have a hunch he'll end up on an NFL practice squad.

Jake on the Hardwood?
Did any one see Jake Locker on Huskies all access? He did a basketball- football challenge with Ryan Appleby. Appleby won shooting 5-5 to Jake's 4-5 3 pointers around the key.
They then went to the gridiron where Appleby won again hitting the goal cross bar 2 of 5 attempts while Jake went 0-5 passing from 20 yards.
Guess where Jake missed most of his passes? If you said they sailed high then you are correct. I hope this is not an omen for next season.

Regardless of the book, Bonnell and his wife are going to experience something many of us never will. I say do it while you can Carl...congrats.
Mello, I don't have to interpret anything Mark said. If you were paying attention to what happened and what was said after the season ended then it should be quite clear what Mark's, and his group of influential donors expectations are. It is to me. 6-6 and no bowl will not cut it, no matter what any of us want to happen. Anything better than that and I'll be a joyous Dawg looking forward to Ty guiding the program through 2009.

Hey NC Husky -
Where did you find that link Locker/Appleby clip on all access? Thanks.

Appleby is more accurate than Jake passing the football? Wow, we really have problems. I thought Jake had been working on his accuracy. Time to move the kid to RB or S and let a real QB take over.

We have an awesome running back for a quarterback!!
We're doomed!!
But I'm sure it's Ty's fault Locker can't hit the ocean while standing on Neptune's head. Mora wouldn't take this Luke Huard nonsense sitting down, and make turning Locker into an accurate passer his number one priority. You can do that with just about anyone, right?

One of the funny things I've noticed about some of the predictions for next year is that the dawgs should get more wins, because the other teams are not as good as this last year. What a terrible and hopeless thing to base your predictions of success on. Meanwhile, the rest of the pac 10 is looking at their incoming kids, the returning players, and dawgs with Ty, and marking us down as a win for them.
The thought of another year with Ty gives me a headache!

Thanks for the Bonnell update. Looks like fun. I hope Carl has a great time: football, bier, und wurst. What more do you need?
And Mick,"Playing for Pizza" is a pleasant, lightweight little sketch, and waht Bonnell does after the UW has nothing to do with Todd Turner, who is gone anyway.

Hey bob question. Where is Alameda Ta'amu and Craig Noble on your depth chart. It seems like Alameda at least should be vying for playing time given his size and strength
