Sporting News reports Walker to Washington
Posted by Bob Condotta
The Sporting News is reporting that UCLA defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker is coming to Washington to fill the same position, replacing Kent Baer.
There is nothing official from UW, and Tyrone Willingham had no comment about any possible moves after the Husky basketball game on Monday.
The LA Daily News, which has had the best read on the Walker situation throughout, says only that it is "headed in that direction" (meaning toward UW) but that nothing is final. The Daily News had reported earlier in the day that more than money would play into Walker's decision. While the Daily News story doesn't say it, that could possibly mean Walker having a say in decisions about the rest of the defensive staff. So there's a chance this could mean more changes on UW's defensive staff if Walker is hired. The LA Times blog hints that the issue of the rest of the assistant coaches on the defensive staff could be a factor in whether Walker stays at UCLA or comes to UW.
If Walker is hired, he is likely coming at a multi-year salary worth more than the $330,000 he was reported to make at UCLA (though I've heard the amount is closer to $360-380,000), which would make him the highest-paid coordinator in UW history. Here's an Orange County Register story that talks about how new UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel will have more money to pay assistants but also mentions Walker having talked with Willingham on Monday and that the Huskies are said to be offering him a possible bump in salary.
As the Daily News reported earlier, Walker and Neuheisel met earlier today, and Neuheisel has called Walker his number one recruit. The Daily News then reported that more than salary would factor into Walker's decision.
If Walker comes aboard, that will fill the most significant of the three openings for the Huskies, who also need to find a new running backs and tight ends/special teams coach. But if Walker comes aboard, as mentioned earlier, it could mean a reshaping of the defensive staff for the Huskies.

bob, you're a dedicated man, happy new year. what an incredible and exciting offseason.
as the verbals stand, do we have room for woods?
anything new on mackay? I can see wulff smoothing him over regarding doba's departure. i'd hate to lose the kid. but... assuming all the other verbals sign, would that scholy be the only way to fit ej? i imagine there may also be some kind of deal to work out for walker's son. grayshirt him best bet if he's coming too?

Im wondering if Prince will count against the scholarships since he could possibly greyshirt. He will be leaving to do his mission work after graduation, thus Im wondering if we could somehow get an extra scholarship.

From the Shelton Journal a New Year's wish for the Huskies...."a 70 point a game offense so that they have a chance at finishing 6-6"....Go D!

Hope that this is so! He would make a nice addition to the coaching staff.
Re: Room on our class. We have 25 commitments but only 23 will count against the current class. Chris Polk is enrolling early and will count against last year's class (taking Emeka Iweka's spot, I guess) and Kevin Prince will either take a year off to rehab or two years off to go on a Mormon mission. So we have room for at least two. But chances are at least one player will not qualify, so they might be able to accept another commitment on top of that.

Wow,
The UCLA blogs at the LA newspapers ar steaming. Many fans stating Walker will help UW become a winner next year and the recruits will come with him. Some are also remarking how Slick Ricks record became progressivly worse at his recrits took over at Colorado and UW. Some are predicting a BCS bowl for UW or a terrible season if Locker gets hurt.
The gist is most are very upset that Rick could not close the deal on DW and UW could.
The Dawgs are on the rise. TW has done everything the right way and now it is time for the wins and bowls to follow.
BTW: The last time a team did not go to a bowl and had a top ten recruiting class was Notre Dame last year and this year.... Oh yeah- Add UW to that ELITE GROUP!

I'm praying this is true. As I posted several days ago, Emmert and Ty need to pay Walker whatever it takes to get him here, including a guaranteed two, three or four year deal regardless of whether Ty is fired or not. Once he's here, we then need to go after any and all UCLA soft verbals, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Happy New Year and GO DAWGS!

NC Husky: I'm confused by what you're saying there at the end. Notre Dame played in the Sugar Bowl last year, so they can't fall into your category of teams without bowl games but with Top 10 recruiting classes.
I do however doubt that we will finish in the Top 10, even on Scout. Things are very tight at the top in terms of points and we've almost maxed out our class; the teams behind us only need to add a few recruits to leapfrog us. I think we may wind up around #13-#17. Still a nice class, but not elite.
Historically the only way to recruit an elite class at Washington is to win the Rose Bowl the preceding year.

Hmm...
LA Daily News reporter Brian Dohn on the Sporting News story:
"...I am not saying the report is wrong, but I will say this is the same reporter who pulled one story off his web site because it was wrong, and he also had bad information on the coaching search in terms of who was being interviewed (including Texas Tech Mike Leach). Maybe the report turns out to be correct, but I trust my sources, who tell me no deal is done yet."

While Ty Willingham is managing this team to a very slow, methodical improvement, progress like Walker will pay huge, immediate dividends. Let's hope this is true and that we can return to our autumn tailgates with huge smiles on our faces. Get some sleep, Bob. Cheers and Happy New Year!

So long as Tormey stays with Walker's arrival all is good. I see Tormey as a great recruiter in his own right. Bob, looking at the time of your post, you are one dedicated dude! Thanks for all that you do and I hope you and your family have a great New Year of joy, health and prosperity!

That is very good news.
Changes on the D staff? That would mean Randy Hart, Chris Tormey and JD Williams.
If you look at the past few years, we've seen little progress among the D linemen.
Likewise with our linebackers.
The DBs did improve since Williams joined the staff.
It would be heretical, but if you look at the staff from the "what have you done for me recently" standard, either Hart or Tormey could go.
Torms of course, is our lead recruiter adn doing a great job.
But is it time for long-standing UW coach Randy Hart to be replaced? Tough question....

Randy Hart has gotten by on reputation for many years.
Bob Simmons got screwed. His TE's consisted of a walk-on, an out of shape former running back, and a converted linebacker.
The kick off coverage team consisted of walk ons and true freshmen.
Simmons got canned because Tyrone couldn't supply him with decent players to work with.

Did you all follow the link to the Sporting News story? In part, it says:
Walker . . . is replacing Karl Baer on Tyrone Willingham's staff.
Erm... Karl?
I'm with DPM. Although I am heartened by a comment Hugh Millen made back when Skippy was still the head coach: "There's a myth that Rick Neuheisel is a great recruiter." And DW is his No. 1 recruit. Calls to mind the memory of the Lorenzo Booker chase, eh?

I read the LA Daily News and the LA Times blog. As Bob mentions, the News does not say anything about Walker wanting to have a say in decisions about the remainder of the defensive coaching staff. The only mention of the other assistants in the LA Times blog is related to Neuheisel's decision on whether to retain them or not. Maybe I missed something.
Nevertheless, I think it would be a mistake to remove Hart or Tormey. I, for one, want to see the Huskies go back to their Don James roots. These guys are those roots. Removing them would be going in the opposite direction. As mentioned in this thread, Hart is a great recruiter (he recruited perhaps the Husky's number one all-time recruit, Napoleon Kaufman). I know, ancient history, but the guy can recruit. Randy Hart has been retained by every head coach since Don James departed. I doubt that they all kept him solely on reputation.
Lastly, bringing in Walker will more than likely be seen as a positive event by the incoming recruits. Axing Hart and/or Tormey may be received as a negative thing by recruits. Why take a chance on losing some recruits from the best Husky's recruiting class in years?

Good news for our defense.
While I am convinced that Willingham is not the right person as a head coach, Walker certainly should be our top choice for DC now that we've decided to keep Ty.

This just in...Dwayne Walker has asked Mike Bellotti if he has any opening for him. Mike turned him down and said he would rather have him coaching either the Bruins or the Huskies making it that much easier to win next year.

And...when was the last time the Huskies won a NC...or were even in a bowl game....or had a winning season. The Ducks have come alot closer to NC in the last few years than the Huskies. If it wasn't for the silly BCS computers in 2001 they would have played in the game.....they did finish #2 in the BCS that year. I find most Husky fans just living in the past and not dealing with reality. Meanwhile, the Ducks continue to dominate them.

Hey Duckstick -- where did the Huskies finish the year before? 2000 -- Top 5 finish FYI.
But don't let the facts get in the way of your blather.

In this particular year (thinking short-term), the recruit(s) that Walker might bring with him are maybe just as important as Walker himself. If one or two top UCLA defensive recruits, who had UW on their list anyway, end up following Walker, this could be the greatest recruiting year in UW football history (currently ranked by one national publication as #7 in the nation already).
