Exploring Tenuta rumor

Posted by Bob Condotta

At this late hour, I can't confirm anything on the comment posted by "Brad'' that he heard on an Atlanta radio station that the Huskies have hired former Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta as their new defensive coordinator.

What I will say is that the radio station he cited, WQXI 790, is the flagship station for Georgia Tech football, so assuming "Brad'' heard what he wrote he heard, the people there might know something.

Also, Tenuta has not gotten any of the jobs of late in which he was rumored to be involved and is still on the market.

He was thought to have a chance to go to LSU, but the Tigers just decided this week to apparently go in a different direction (you can read about that here).

He was also initially thought headed to South Carolina, but the Gamecocks also went with someone else.

Tenuta was the DC at Georgia Tech the last six years (read bio here) but lost that job when head coach Chan Gailey was fired. Tenuta, who was also associate head coach, stayed on to coach Tech in the Humanitarian Bowl against Fresno State, a game Tech lost 40-28. He was then not retained by new Tech coach Paul Johnson.

This Sporting News story on the coaches convention a few weeks ago referred to Tenuta as "considered by many to be the best in the business.''

So I was surfing around on Scout, and I was interested to see that the 2008 UCLA class has slid down the rankings a little bit. Anyone know why? Did some of their recruits commit elsewhere?

I recall a large handful changed to soft recruits when Dorrel got fired, and they still have about 6 listed as "soft."

What is most interesting is Walker's son, the guy they retained as DC, is still isted as "soft."

I figured they just hadn't updated anything in a while, but they have updated EJ Woods back to a firm commit. You would think they would update Walker's son too, wouldn't you?

Well I hope we get him. Would be nice if he could get a repeat beatdown on ND this coming season.

Guest they update the rankings on scout.com every morning at like 6 am, so what is on there is accurate as they have heard. It maybe that they are slow in gathering data, but I doubt it, they seem to be pretty up to date with the rumor mill.

I hope the rumor on Tenuta is true. That would be an awesome hire for the Dawgs.

this seems like a great move any coach that is in line for a dc job at lsu can come coach at wash

do you think he will bring some of his own assitants?

if he is the DC then that only leaves running backs coach, Tight End, and special teams coach left correct?

slick rick just hired a new running backs coach at UCLA so where does that leave dino babers?

ucla probably fell because all the other teams around them starting picking up comimitments

this is huge news and others just want to talk about college recruiting rankings like they know how these players are going to turn out.

Washington might have just landed a DC that can help them get to the rose bowl? kinda big news

"Washington may have landed a DC that can help them get to the rose bowl."

Wow - I want whatever you are eating, drinking, smoking. We need to think about getting a winning record next year - not a rose bowl.

Sadly, whatever DC is hired, it's a one-year gig because the new AD is going to want to bring in his own coach - plus TW sucks.

Do we really want a DC from the ACC? They have been down the last couple of years!!!

Funny how KimisGod keeps coming back here to post... if this sight really sucks and is for losers that is! Do you actually have something constructive to add, or more that same negacrap?

Although I may not be TW's biggest fan, most people can see that the garbage you and you're kind are spewing out is ridiculous. Lets move on and focus on the DC and get excited about Husky football again!

Tenuta would be a grrrreat hire! However, I am a bit skeptica... because "some guy" heard it on a radio station on the other side of the country. Hope it's true. If so, our defense will definately be on the rise!

For all the dawgman.com guys, here are a few reasons why the "TW will be fired after LOI day" yarn is bogus.
1. Recruits would feel betrayed. Why would they stick to their LOIs if the UW recruited them on false pretenses?
2. Head coach candidates would assume Emmert et al. are always lying to them and that any promises are valueless.
3. It would make Emmert look bad. Say what you want, but the guy is a consummate politician. He homes in on the glory and avoids bad PR like the plague.

So guys, how about a fact or two to validate your fairy tale.

And BTW, what are you to do next season, when the Huskies win 8 games and you're rooting for them to lose? Will your heads explode?

Cheers, jerks

Wasn't The Sporting News the outfit that broke the 'Walker to Washington' story??

Salemdawg -

No one can be sure about the length of the new DC's contract. I hate to keep refering to UCLA's DeWayne Walker, but he himself admitted that the Dub was will to give him a "multi-year" contract.

Plus, this school has a history of keeping it's assistant coaches through coaching changes, i.e:

Randy Hart - has been here under Don James, Jim Lambright, Rick Neuheisel, Keith Gilbertson and Tyrone Willingham.

Chris Tormey - Keith Gilbertson and Tyrone Willingham.

I don't think a coach of Jon Tenuta's status would come here for a one year deal, you can bet, he has too many other offers to choose from.

You do make a good point on us - Coaches, Players and Fans, just focusing on a wining record. It's been too many years of sub-.500 ball to be talking BCS bowls.

Anyway, if Jon Teunta comes to the Dub, we will be able say "this was a good day"!

I'll throw one more thought into the fire concerning Jon Tenuta.

We all KNOW Coach Willingham was in Oakland three days ago and in Arizona two days ago, so it's safe to assume that he was not in Atlanta to offer Jon Tenuta a job.

Could that have been Mark Emmert going back to his old stomping grounds and finding a DC that HE wanted and planned to keep for a while? Just a thought. Wouldn't be the first time Pres. Emmert was involved in a coaching decision.

ian,

Sporting news did break the Walker story, but all they are doing in the above article is stating that Tenuta is probably the most desired commodity currently available and that he was drawing a lot of interest during the coaches convention. They did not state where he was going, nor did the speculate.

For what it's worth, it wasn't that Johnson did not retain Tenuta. The ball was in Tenuta's court whether to stay or not. Tenuta made the decision to leave GT all on his own...

YlwJkt, thanks for the input. If you're close to the Jackets, do you have any idea why Tenuta hasn't been snactched up by someone? The rumors have lots of programs interested in him, and he seems to be respected. Thanks

A point of correction to your story. Coach Tenuta was offered the opportunity to stay with the team, but decided he wanted to pursue other things professionally. Many of us GT fans were very sad to see him go. After he got passed up for the head Coaching job at GT, it was extremely unlikely that he was going to stay.

For more conjecture on why Tenuta hasn't been hired somewhere by now, see here:

It is a somewhat strange thing for most of the Tech fans that Tenuta has not been hired.

The impression given locally in Atlanta was that new Coach Paul Johnson was willing to discuss the potential of Tenuta staying, but the Tenuta stated he had "other professional goals" or similar.

Tenuta does present one problem organizationally in that he is not a very willing recruiter and he probably wouldnt be the guy that perhaps a mother would want to send to college with. The fact that he doesnt recruit can present a burden to a staff, IMO

He prefers to sit upstairs and some coaches dont like that. He is an architect and operator of the defense, and relies on his position coaches to work with the players on the sideline during the game.

he is more a man behind a curtain than an open personality to the masses. but he had results.
