ASU-UA create cool award
Posted by Bob Condotta
Nice story out of the Phoenix-area today as Arizona and Arizona State have joined forces to create a Most Valuable Player award for their annual rivalry and name it after sports writer Bob Moran, a longtime journalist in the state who covered both schools at different times.
It's not so much that they named this after a sports writer that I like, though Moran is a very deserving honoree. Anybody who covered the Pac-10 long got to know Moran, and his never-ending smile, and he was a constant presence on the conference's weekly media teleconferences, asking insightful questions of just about every coach every week. At Pac-10 media day one year, I saw then-Oregon coach Rich Brooks and a couple of others serenade Moran in the lobby with the old Beach Boys tune of "Barbara Ann'' but with Moran's name in the title, instead.
What I also like about this is the idea of creating an MVP award for the annual rivalry game (obviously in our case up here, the Apple Cup). To be honest, I thought this was the kind of thing that might be done this year with Boeing's sponsorship of the game.
But in any case, it seems like a good idea that could easily be copied up here. It would add some intrigue to the game and give some player an honor he would remember the rest of his life --- and be remembered for for as long as the game is played. It would be a fun and tidy way to further preserve the history of the game, just like is done with the MVP award of the Super Bowl where every so often all of the past winners are invited back and every year all the newspapers run the list of the winners, again bringing to life their accomplishments.
Not sure if there's a similar person to name it after up here --- off the top of my head, can't think of someone who has had the same kind of all-encompassing impact on the Apple Cup. But even if they just named it after Boeing or something, seems like an idea worth considering.

How about the "Bob Condotta MVP Award"
or perhaps
the "Thiel Trophy"
:)

actually tenth but who's counting

my point was that the winning team in the Apple Cup would finish 9th and the losing team would finish 10th...
Posted by nah

and the huskies would win only after having clinched tenth place with seven straight losses

It should be the Lou Gellerman award...

"Corey Williams MVP award" -no matter what happens the rest of your career a good play in the Apple cup will leave a good taste in the mouth of husky fans.

Name it after Keith Jackson or Royal Brougham.

Even as a Husky, I could support naming it after Keith Jackson. He's given a lot to the game and he's well loved by both sides.

Whoa Nelly! Add my vote for the "Keith Jackson Award."
Alternatively, we could name it for Carl Bonnell ;)

Chow was hired two days ago.
As far as an award, why not? It's a big game for both sides, so recognizing a certain player for a great contribution seems worthwhile. Especially since its often a no-name guy who has a career day in the Apple Cup.

Only one option here: The Blaine Newnham Award. He's the dean and a lot of us miss him greatly.

the Blaine Newnham Award should go to the winner of the UW vs. Cal crew meet

Please keep in mind, the Apple Cup involves two schools, UW and WSU, and a MVP award would have to be named for a person significant to BOTH schools, not just one or the other.
Bob is right. There is probably no such person in the State of Washington that is / was so significant to both schools as Bob Moran was to both Arizona schools.

Love the idea. I'd hate it to be named after a Cougar, they'd hate it to be named after a Husky. But, how about the Curtis Williams Award?
Bob, why is it taking SO long to get any assistants hired????

What about Paul Allen? If I'm not mistaken he's a Cougar alum and has a building named after him on UW campus

How about the 18 MPH Treadmill award? The individual gets the trophy and the winning team will actually get an 18 MPH Treadmill to boost recruiting.

oh c'mon i can tell you are all neophyte husky fans here if an award should be named name it after Bruce King komo-4's host of the weekly husky show back when the dawgs and cougs were a true rivalry. Not like today, since the Seattle media has typecast this into a "friendly" game

Keith Jackson. It's a no brainer. He's the voice of college football. Graduated from WSU but got his start covering Huskies football in the early 50's. Come on you've all heard the voice of a young Keith Jackson on the Husky centennial highlight video. According to his Wikipedia entry Jackson was also the first american sports announcer to broadcast an event from Soviet Union when he covered a UW crew race against a Soviet team (we won--also first ever American sports victory on Russian soil)

Or how about Keith Jackson's call of the famous game against Nebraska in Lincoln. I was at the game, but have the broadcast on tape. I love Jackson's "hold on there little fellah" attitude toward Bob Griese, who seemed to think the Huskies had no chance. Of course, when has Griese ever given the Huskies any cred?

I'm referring to the 1991 game in Lincoln Nebraska. Anybody else go to it? After the game Cornhusker fans cheared the Huskies as they left the field. One offered to buy my '91 rose bowl hat.

Wasn't there Spoke but I watched it and whooped it up for Jay Barry's run. You're right on about Keith Jackson, a coug, voice of the Huskies and THE legendary boraodcaster of college football, couldn't be a better choice for an Apple Cup honoree.

Dave,
Watch a replay of Jay's run you'll see little brother Damon chasing him down the sidelines . . .

BASED ON THE PREVIOUS BLOG STRING:
KimIsGod:
Your post is almost entirely wrong by all the evidence out there...namely, the feedback of the signees on why they chose UW.
I preface this by also noting, I completely disagree with Fernpatch Dawg, who basically claims UW has no mystique. Just walk across campus on an autumn day, or during the cherry blossoms and tell me the lack of mystique. Walk on husky field, imagining your a part of something bigger than high school ball and tell me the lack of mystique. Sorry, I digress...(that comment from Fernpatch just bugged the crap out of me..very shortsighted).
Anyways, back to your point of recruits signing no thanks to Ty. Your crazy. Case in point Carroll:
"Carroll, listed at 6 feet 4, 286 pounds, told ContraCostaTimes.com that he was drawn to UW by Huskies coach Tyrone Willingham, calling him "a great guy."" (Seattle Times, today)
This is just one example of many who have said Ty was the draw for them to commit. Have you not been paying attention?!?
By the way, I'm not a real big Ty supporter (his coaching hasn't shown me anything but character, no coaching, just character). But let's give credit where credit is due...A GREAT RECRUITING CLASS!!!
BTW: Does anyone out there know why there is such a big discrepancy between the two websites about our recruiting class rank?

Name it after anybody except any of those juveniles at KJR. Today's carrying on about on-air flatulence (Mahler, et al) is just one more example of a once classy program gone bad. What a wretched state of affairs that we have to listen to them to get Husky or Cougar news.

Keith Jackson would be great. I think he even did a year or two of Husky football.
Of course Bob Robertson would be great as well. Although affiliated with WSU he was voice of the Huskies for at least a year.

all i can say about magnum is that he looks like MAN
now the only other recruit i even care about out there is bayless but if all the huskies had was the recruits that have committed now it would be a great class
martin bayless said that his best part of his whole visit was the one on one with ty. scout also says that him and his family loved the whole visit and you would think that he was going to make his decsion but stayed with plans and will vist north carolina and then make a decsion?
he seems like a stud i think he will be the last commit to the class
also Rick Neuheisel added to his football coaching staff by hiring Wayne Moses Wednesday as the running backs coach. found on scout.com
what happened to Babers?

I thought this blurb from scout.com was interesting. Does it mean we have a DC? (kidding)
I wish we could get Mangum's uncle to come out of retirement, but I guess he's too old (Gayle Sayers).

SEATTLE - It's tough for a prospect when things are out of his control. For Kurt Mangum, the 6-05, 228-pound linebacker prospect from Chandler, Ariz. would love to have left his official visit to Washington this past weekend with an official offer, but the Huskies have to do something on their end first - hire a defensive coordinator

magnum looks like a beast. 230 lbs and runs a 4.59 forty. those are some outstanding numbers for a middle linebacker. keith jackson is a no brainer, i actually enjoyed watching the pac-10 when he was calling the games. now we have papadorkis to listen to, equivalent to nails scratching on a chalk board. keith we miss you!!

Keith Jackson is the obvious, if brilliant, choice.
As for him living in the area, only if you consider the San Fernando Valley to be nearby.
But it is a short flight.
