Another DC candidate?
Posted by Bob Condotta
One commenter posted that he heard that UW coach Tyrone Willingham interviewed Washington Redskins assistant Jerry Gray for the defensive coordinator job over the weekend.
Haven't been able to confirm that yet --- yes, I did call the Redskins, but it's not always quite that easy. But thought I'd pass along some information on Gray, who certainly has a resume that would make him make sense as a hire, and who now has an uncertain future after the resignation of Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs Tuesday.
Here's Gray's bio from the Redskins web site.
Here's his wikipedia entry.
And here's a story from the Washington Post today on the aftermath of the resignation of Gibbs and what that means to the team's assistants that quotes Gray stating the obvious --- he may need to look elsewhere for a job soon.

An impressive bio, leads me to believe he could help turn this defense around, especially heis background in the secondary/passing defence.
Good work Bob, as another blogger mentioned,we appreciate your diligence tracking down these stories. You've got the bet Dawg Blog on the Net.

So, to this point, I think I've heard Gray, T Williams, and B Young as possibilities. Am I missing anyone?

If Carroll bails for the Falcons, what about Nick Holt? He has northwest ties -- U. of Idaho

Gray loooks like a solid choice.
Did you guys see the 'Skin/Hawks game last weekend?
Special Teams had a good return but was always brouoght back by some illegal contact. If they can fix that, then Gray would be a solid choice!

Another DC that would be available would be Jim Bates who served that role as the DC for the Denver Broncos this past year. Bates was also the DC that developed the current scheme for the Green Bay Packers, but chose to leave when he was passed over for the head coaching position. Previously, he served as the interim head coach for the Miami Dolphins.

Nice comments on Jim Bates but if he left Green Bay because he was passed over for the head coaching position, a DC position at the UW does what for him? Improve his resume?
I DO like the Jerry Gray bio though and hats off to Norm for having the lamest post on the blog. The "diversity" comment is completely uncalled for.

Gray's son is on my son's high school football team. He said his dad did not interview.

Nice. Looks like he's always been involved with tough Defenses in the NFL. Redskins, Buffalo, Tennessee. This would be a good choice. Plenty of NFL ties like the recruits like as well.
