A.D. update

Posted by Bob Condotta

Had a chance to talk with both UW president Mark Emmert and interim athletic director Scott Woodward in the past couple of days about where the search for a permanent AD goes now.

Emmert said the plan is to form a "small search committee'' in a month or so and then go about the task of finding a replacement for the fired Todd Turner.

Before then, Emmert said he plans to meet with groups of faculty, athletic staff and other such groups to get a sense of what they want in a new AD, then form a search committee.

He said he'd like to hire a new AD by the end of the academic year at the latest, saying "there's no reason not to.''

Some have speculated that Woodward, who is currently the school's vice president for external affairs, could just slide into the full-time AD's job --- he officially becomes the interim AD on Jan. 31. But Woodward said it's still too early to tell if that's even something he would want to do. "I really love the job I have now,'' he said.

Upshot is, sounds like this is a process that is going to take a little while.

EMMERT ON DC SEARCH: I also asked Emmert about his role in the search for a new defensive coordinator --- he met witih UCLA 's DeWayne Walker twice before Walker decided to stay with the Bruins. Emmert said he talked to Walker the day before the Rose Bowl --- Emmert was there as all conference presidents and chancellors are invited to the game each year --- and again at halftime of the game (Walker was also in attendance).

"My role in any of these things is just to help out the coach,'' he said. "I don't normally get involved in those things --- this is Tyrone's search and his decison. When he was interested in pursuing coach Walker, I just asked if there was any way I could be helpful and it turned out he was talking to someone in the same town (where Emmert was) so we chatted a bit.''

Bob -

Regarding the AD search, do you know if Ron Rivera (fromer DC in Chicago and current LB coach in San Diego) is being considered?

Posted by KemoSabe

"By the time Neuheisel had a conference call with reporters announcing Walker's decision, he'd already phoned a recruit to tell him Walker was remaining on staff. Neuheisel said he couldn't reveal the recruit's name but did say the recruit was elated. Walker seemed happy to be staying as well."

The above was copied from the LA Daily News. Wasn't this past couple weeks supposed to be a quiet or dead period? If so, what is Skippy doing contacting recruits...or is this possibly his first violation at ucla? Wasn't he also required to take a test of some sort prior to contacting recruits?

Great question KemoSabe!

Frankly, I hope Neuheisel screws himself over.

KemoSabe,

I don't have time to read throught the previous entries, but your question was addressed earlier this week. In short, coaches are allowed some contact with recruits during the dead period. I am pretty sure his contact was allowed.

Which is too bad.

Thanks for the input guys. How about the question regarding the test he was supposed to take prior to contacting recruits? I read about it somewhere that it was a NCAA requirement.

During the dead period the coaches can call recruits once a week, but the recruits can call the coaches everyday if they wanted to.

The following article mentions that he can't recruit on the road until he passes the NCAA test.

How come nobody has thought of D'Marco Farr as defensive coordinator? He is very knowledgable about football and he would add some personality. They should at least see if he would be interested. Or what about Mora, he said he wanted to coach the Huskies. Maybe he would be interested in being the DC. Jerry Glanville is a pretty big deal down here in Portland, he would be ideal. Come on guys, think.

They should see if Rod Thorn would accept the AD position. With Jason Kidd demanding a trade maybe he will resign from the Nets. Who better to get our athletics going in the right direction. I hope the committee will consider him. Go Huskies!!!!

OregonDawg,

D'Marco Farr? Has he ever coached at all? Mora has been mentioned on this board for about 16 months. Glanville doesn't sound too bad, but I've always heard he was pretty content in Portland.

I think TW has a few people in mind and it will all shake out after the coaches conference. I don't think us throwing any names out here will affect the hire.

Posted by OregonDawg

8:04 PM, Jan 04, 2008

I don't know if he has coached or not but he is always talking about football on the TV...seems to know what he is talking about. I was just throwing it out there, maybe he reads this blog and will apply for the job. Or maybe coach Willingham will decide he is worth talking to. I would rather get an ex-husky who has never coached than some guy who will just leave in a few years.

Go Dawgs!!!!

Only Tyee members should be allowed to speculate about potential coaches. At least we have some intelligence. This is getting ridiculous, I am embarrassed to be a Husky sometimes. Hey Oregon Dawg, how much money do you contribute to the program? Do you have season tickets? Are you an alum? How old are you, like 12? Should have to pass an IQ test to get a login for this board.

Go Huskies! (except for the dumb ones)

Hey TyeeTony,

Just because you donate a bunch of money to the U does not make you intelligent about football. I am not saying you don't know anything about it, but rather... money does not equal intelligence. Neither does age... I've had plenty of good arguments with people older and younger than myself.

Although, I agree with you on this issue (and may well on others), and obviously don't think DeMarco Farr would be a wise decision, the way you respond to people only perpetuates the problems this discussion board seems to have... ie. people lashing out at others simply because they have a different view or one you view as less important than your own. You're the one who needs to grow up! We're all supposed to be on the same team here!

8:52 PM, Jan 04, 2008

This board is just getting ridiculous. It's as if anyone who used to PLAY football here is now a coaching candidate. Steve Emtmann, D'Marco Farr, Steve Alvord. It just gets old. Why don't you all just shut up and wait and see what happens.

Who pissed in your Cheerios Tyee Tony? That is what this board is for. People have fun speculating and discussing different topics. No need to trash someone because their ideas may be farfetched.

hey tyee nee toni,

take a chill pill bud.
i remember going to husky games as a kid when sonny sixkiller was playing in foul weather but thinking this is the coolest place to be ever. i'm not saying that oregon dawg is a kid but there is a husky fan in the land of o's. we should welcome him for being part of a great tradition.
but no, you come across as an elitist!, arrogant, snob.
this is a no pay site. so please, go back to dawgman with your tyee buds.
me thinks you may have more money than sense.
i feel for any coach of your kids that had to deal with you.
it's alums like you that persuaded ucla to hire slick rick.
geesh.

It's people like me that pay the bills around here so that jerks like you have a team to watch. People like me ARE Husky football, people like you are nobody. If someone who knows something has something to say taht is intelligent it will just get lost in the midst of all this crap about ex-players being coaching candidates. You are only hurting the program that I help pay for by doing this. So stop it!!!!

All of the "Tyee's" need to chill the hell out. This isn't your little circle jerk, it's a public board, people can say whatever they want.
I'll throw out Norton JR and Banker as good candidates, that as an added benefit would damage conference foes.

Let's just say there is a defensive recruit out there that is on the fence and he checks into this board to see what the buzz is regarding our defensive coordinator position and reads that we are considering offering the job to D'Marco Farr? How does that help anything? Next thing you know he is going to UCLA, and isn't in our backfield next year. Do you understand what I am saying you pee-brains?

1:00 AM, Jan 05, 2008

Tyee Twat-
Because you say you pay the bills you feel as if you are better husky fan than everyone else on this board? You donate money because you want to, not because you feel like you should gain power out of it. It is people like you who are a bring shame on the UW.

Who do you think should be the DC?

Oh and I really doubt any recruit is going to say "hey man those people on that seattle times blog dont know what there talking about, i think i am going to go to another school." Come on man.

Coach has a plan for the DC position. He has chose to not publicize his intentions following the Walker debacle. Those who need to know, know. Those who do not need to know, don't know. Nothing being done on this board is going to do anything but hurt that process.

Posted by guido

1:17 AM, Jan 05, 2008

What about Chan Gailey for defensive coordinator? He might be looking for an NFL DC position but he would be a great choice if we could get him.

Posted by MelloDawg

2:24 AM, Jan 05, 2008

Isn't it fun how this DC search becomes incredibly hectic when Ty's Plan A doesn't work out? As far most Husky fans are concerned, it was Dwayne Walker and ONLY Dwayne Walker. Heck, we've got people propsing D'Marco Farr for Christ's sake. Why don't we just throw Joe Jarzynka into the mix as well? He was balls-to-the-wall, he'd be great scheming defenses.

Ah to see Ty get used as a bargaining chip...how funny.

I just hope the Seahawks lose tomorrow so that we will then be able to talk to Jim Mora. I really think he is the guy we need. If the Seahawks go deep into the playoffs, the Huskies will probably have to go on to plan C. Go Redskins!!!

Things are already in the works. Just because Coach has only made his intentions known to the inner-circle, do not assume he does not have it all under control. When the name is announced it will exceed your loftiest expectations....trust me.

Joe Jarzynka !!! Thats genious. I haven't laughed that hard since the post a few up higher where the guy speculated a quality recruit would look on this blog to see what all of us think the U should do next. its just the most important decision of their lives to date, why not leave it in the hands of one of the clearly sane people in here who think D'Marco Farr or any other husky who has played defense in the last 15 years, would be a legitamate college coach. What about Dave Hoffman or Lester Towns ? They were good. Jason Chorak ? Scott White ? C'mon. Anyone who has left a big college team, like say Texas, isn't coming here. Akina would be awesome, but its a dream. It boils down to a smaller college team with an up and coming defensive mind, or an NFL guy who just got his marching orders.

I think it's odd that some of you actually think mora would be considered for the DC job. First, he isn't a Ty guy because he has a loose mouth. Second, he would have incentive to perform badly at that position, since a few homers want him to replace Ty. Mora will never be hired due to a conflict of interest and a bad fit. You can whine about this all you like, but that's the way it is. So get over it.

tyee.....if thats true then it could only be singletary! and we all know that wont happen. If woods doesnt want to come up here because of what he reads on the seattle times blog then he really wasnt all that much into us anyway. Id love to have him here but I have a feeling hes gonna go to CO. only because he cant get into ucla which sucks for him but thats life. Woods, come up here and be part of something special the next couple years with JAKE!!!

GO HUSKIES and kill the cougs today!

Bob: What do you know about the NAACP sticking their nose in UW's business regarding coaching changes? What impact did this have on Turner and his resignation? What pressure did Emmert receive from politicians regarding this whole affair?

Posted by NC Husky

10:33 AM, Jan 05, 2008

Good Question Piper

However, With U Dub already being one to two D-1 schools that have ethnic minorities at the helm in both football and basketbal one would think the NAACP would be holding up the U as a model for other schools to follow and not attempting to suggest they need to find more monority coaches. Just my 2 cents.

It was mentioned up above but nobody has commented on it...I don't know if you didn't notice it or what but I am going to readdress it because I think it is a good idea that should get some attention. What do you guys think about hiring Jim Mora for the defensive coordiantor job? Discuss.

Posted by MukilteoSean

12:54 PM, Jan 05, 2008

Funny to think that people are actually going to stay on topic in these discussions. It usually breaks down into name calling within 4 posts. Jim Mora as defensive coordinator ? Its not a bad idea, and he could definitely take over if things don't go so well in 2008. As pointed out by bob, there are bigger teams with better coaching situations out there, Texas, LSU, etc... Mora is probably the best bet to get a known name at DC...

I wasn't campaigning for Mora as the new d-coordinator. It would be interesting, and he's a known name around seattle, even to the casual Husky fan. I honestly don't think it will be him. As I have maintained, it will be a smaller college coach who will try to make his name and a larger calibur school, or an NFL guy looking for a job. There are former huskies that fit that bill.
