Schedule moves in the offing
Posted by Bob Condotta
Washington is working on several moves to its 2008 schedule to create what would turn out to be three byes, changes that could become official this week.
The moves would consist of:
1, moving the Sept. 13 game at Oregon to Aug. 30, the season opener for both teams;
2, moving the home game with Oklahoma on Sept. 20 to Sept. 13;
3, and moving an Oct. 11 game at Cal to Dec. 6.
If all of that is approved, then UW would have byes on Sept. 20 (in between home games against Oklahoma and Stanford), Oct. 11 (in between games at Arizona and home to Oregon State) and Nov. 29 (the week after the Apple Cup).
The Huskies wanted to create some byes to avoid playing 12 games in 12 weeks, as they did during the 2006 season. And in years when the Apple Cup is in Pullman it takes even more creativity as WSU doesn't want to move the game from its Saturday-before-Thanksgiving date due to the fact that students are off the following week and attendance would suffer.
Aside from creating byes, UW athletic director Todd Turner said he also likes the revamped schedule because "it spreads out the year and it keeps you playing right up until the last part of the season, so if there is a post-season in your future, you've kept your team sharp. The other piece about it is that if probably opens up some TV opportunities for us. I think we will have some pretty good TV exposure.''
There was talk of playing the Oregon game on Aug. 28, a Thursday night, but that couldn't be worked out, Turner said.
Turner said there was no real discussion of changing any opponents for next season --- UW will host Oklahoma, BYU and Notre Dame in non-conference play.
Turner noted that UW already asked Oklahoma once to move its game, from the 2007 season to 2008.
"I just didn't think we could go back to them again,'' he said.
He also said all of those opponents are ones UW would like to continue playing in the future and simply canceling contracts, etc., wouldn't be fair.
All of this is subject to Pac-10 approval, which could come this week.
If approved, it would create the longest regular season in UW history in terms of the time span from the opening game to the final game.
Here is the 2008 schedule as currently constructed and before any of the proposed changes.

I understand the desire to create some bye weeks, but why would you want to open the season with a critical conference game?

Yeah, right, if you have a post season game, ie bowl, your teams stays sharp. Not likely to happen Mr. Turner if you keep Baer and it seems that we are.

Having a game after the Apple Cup is horrible. Playing in December is for rivalries and bowl games.

Mixed feelings on this.
Lest we forget---seven times in the 1990's we opened with Pac-10 opponents, 5 wins and 2 defeats.
Not bad.
But I agree on the long wait after Apple Cup to play Cal. Ugh. Just does not feel right.

i like the oregon game being so early because u dub students aren't in school yet and hopefully a ton will be able to make the trip to eugene and we could pakc the stands with dawg fans. secondly, dogtired mentioned the whole baer situation. any info on what's going on with that whole situation. i'm getting worried that he may actually be back next season. that would be awful. he and ty may have a good relationship, but ty needs to syck it up and do what's best for the team. being ahead in games means nothing if the d can't hold it.

While I am concerned about the lack of movement on the Baer front, keep in mind that it most likely will come (at the very earliest) once the quiet period starts December 17th. They could also wait until after the New Year/bowl games are over. Thoug this change won't happen in the immediate future, I am very confident it will happen.

Since when does Oregon start the season slowly?
They're big faders, not slow starters. Oregon is 14-1 in its last 15 home openers.

My Huskies dynasty on NCAA 2008 for xbox360 has only 6 seniors in 2010. Good luck, real-life Huskies!
Let me tell you this right now: once you become the best Pac-10 recruiter, it's tough to compete with Texas. You gotta get that Texas pipeline going!! Also, how did I ever start an Alabama pipeline? It's funny how 5-star recruits from Maine and Rhode Island are willing to come across the country to play for coach Willingham.
It's hard recruiting solid offensive and defensive linemen, even in video games. Big ups to the current coaching staff for getting a hold of our top in-state recruits. A great line is the key to having a great football team.
About scheduling: it's tricky thing, that non-conference scheduling. You won't know how good your football team is until you line up with the best, and I think we will get that when we face Oklahoma next season. What better way to put Locker on the national spotlight than upstaging Bradford in that game?

I'm still expecting KB to get the axe. I'm betting that TW & Co. are betting it's more productive on the recruiting front to have him around making phone calls and house visits, etc. The contact period ends Dec. 16th, if you fire him then, you have almost two months to find a replacement before signing day in early February.

I will not get the axe. Our teams have had solid defenses in the past, so Tyrone knows that I am more than capable of getting the job done. I was named defensive coordinator of the week after the Boise St win by YOUR "football god" Don James, doggonnit!!
This season was a very tough year, given our youth in the secondary. Going into the year, the plan was to not put our young bucks on an island, which happens when you blitz like crazy. Tyrone knows that, just as well as anybody.
Second, having such a young defense takes time for them to adapt to the college game. It was my decision, backed by Coach Willingham, to keep the playbook simple in order to pur our players in the best position to make a play.
Is it my fault our freshmen corners got beat like they stole something time and time again?
Is it my fault our linebackers could not make a tackle to save their life?
These were growing pains, people! I will prove to you THIS YEAR that we will have one of the stingiest defenses in the conference, or my name isn't Kent "Teddy" Bear!!
I'M OUT!!! YOU CAN SEE ME COACHING ON THE SIDELINES AT THE 2009 ROSE BOWL!

(In case you don't go back to the last thread - Wildman, I wasn't objecting to your questions, but to the guy who turned your questions into an opportunity for more Ty-debate).
Sven: You are dead-on that Oregon is a late fader rather than a slow starter. However, when I checked to see who they opened their seasons with over the last 15 years, I didn't find them playing the best teams in the world. They played Michigan State twice (losing once) and the rest were teams like WSU, Stanford, Hawaii (back when they weren't so good), Houston, Portland State, etc....you know, the classic Oregon OOC schedule.
This might contribute to their fast start.

Fast start, lousy finish is the classic Duck story, but in this case you have to figure it is to UW's advantage to face a new QB in his first start rather than after he has half a season under his belt.
I like the moves to create the early bye. From a fan's standpoint I'm not too crazy about playing December 6, but I can see how creating more weeks of practice could help. I hope we never move a home game into a post-Thanksgiving slot though.

The classic Oregon OOC? Like Michigan? Oregon typically schedules an ideal OOC. One good team (Michigan, Oklahoma), one mediocre team (Fresno St), and one bad team (Houston, Portland St). Hardly a schedule to rag on.
As for opening at Oregon, I'd say the current Huskies are the typical Oregon opponent for an opener, a bad-to-mediocre team.

HFNY - You are impossible to defeat in debate, you will always win. Therefore I won't even try. If Baer is still here on Dec. 17 then you point to January, if he's still here then, you'll point to Febuary as his firing date. When he's here in Febuary you'll point to March, and so on and so on. Then you'll provide as evidence secret meetings b/w Ty and Baer that only you know about. These meetings have "obviously" happened according to you. Yes, as a wise person once said, it is truly impossible and pointless to argue against insanity.

bye weeks help
growth of a young players
make for better preperation for games
help deal with injuries
help with inexperience
gives 3 extra weekends during the season for recruiting

rob, I like the fact that we will open the season with oregon if the schedule changes work out. Without Dixon, and most likely Stewart, the Duck offense is going to be broken for at least the first half of the season. This also means that UW gets the summer to prepare for the Ducks and it gets to develop new offensive schemes the duck coaching staff will not have seen.
I don't want this to become a trend, but I think it works out well for next year. There will be nothing better than making the Ducks look stupid on opening day in their own house on national television!

Whatever happened to starting out the season with San Jose St? Or even Purdue back when you were suprised they even still had a football team? Or even Wisconsin in Alvarez's first year? (Side note: I always remember Coach Alvarez anectodely pointing to the Huskies and telling his team "Now that's a football team. That's where we need to get to." Next thing you know, they're winning a Rose Bowl. The Badgers? What's next, Hawaii winning a BCS game?)
Where's Nevada now that we need them? Or Idaho St.? Does Toledo still suit up? This program can't have enough 'confidence' wins.
OMG, it just hit me. We need to figure out a way to schedule ourselves. Maybe we can count the spring game and the fall scrimmage? There's got to be a way. Maybe if Mora were AD? (Relax...)
Oh wait, we have Notre Dame scheduled. Better be a complete and utter pounding. Those late season triumphs over Duke and Stanford have me a little worried, but hopefully Weis can make some more colossal mistakes. It's like the guy never met a fourth down he didn't like.
Other than that I guess that means we have a great opportunity to start off with High Quality wins, which is cool. At least we have those games at Husky Stadium. The Oklahoma game will hopefully get the Locker for Heisman campaign to another level.
Not as many graduating QB's in the Pac-10 as I had hoped. Haven't we been hearing about Carpenter, Tuitama, Cowan, and Longshore for more than four years now? Seems that way. (2009 is ours!) It's going to be tough again. Now THIS is a conference. TheOhio St. should be embarassed of themselves and concede their invitation and let theASU beat theLSU; instead they get rewarded by serious cash and a spotlight. Hopefully they'll get further rewarded with another thePounding in front of the nation.
GO HUSKIES!! C'MON PLAYERS IN THE OFFSEASON!!! WAY TO HIT THE WEIGHTS!!! WAY TO STAY IN SHAPE!!!

Moving the Cal game back is a GOOD thing, regardless of how the team does:
For the people who do not favor Ty, and have a bleak outlook: the late w/ Cal game buys you 2 more weeks of practice (remember if not in a bowl, then there could not be organized practices after the AC)
For those who think that this will turn around and UW will go bowling: Turner is right (a scary thought) and it will help keep the team sharp, garuntee a TV slot. Just ask tOSU last year...

Any way we could just have a bye every week?? I'm pretty sure we could do it if we started the season in early August and ended in mid-December. This way we'd only have one week off before the Yahoo.com Fun Bowl or whatever absurd bowl we might qualify for and would be really sharp for the game against Nevada or Kent State!

Turner needs to get Oklahoma off the schedule and replace them with Idaho, Utah St., Toledo, NM State, New Mexico or some other guranteed victory. What is he thinking? We need a soft nonconference schedule right now (think Kansas St in the late 90's to early 2000's) since the conference is as tough as ever. Opening with a conference game is a stupid idea - yes its worked for us when we opened against Stanford and ASU in prior years but if you lose (1996 loss to ASU - only conference loss that season)you have an immediate hurdle to overcome. Turner needs to clear up this schedule, even if we only play 11 games.

Pushing the Cal game was wise this season, and if you look at their trends in the Tedford era, they have stumbled near the end of the year. That game could be huge for the program, and I think this schedule is a great strategy. I know it feels weird playing games after the apple cup, but we have to do whatever it takes to be successful.

iowa husky,
Most of Oregon's home openers have been against mediocre to bad teams. Unfortunately, the Huskies still fit in this category. Oregon will have an interesting QB competition, but Roper played decently against a very good OSU defense in the Civil War. Oregon will definitely have advantages in RB, WR/TE, DL, and could have advantages in LB and CB as well.
Oregon has also beaten Washington by 20 points or more in four consecutive years. I like moving teams around to create bye weeks, but Oregon is still one of the toughest conference opponents to have as the opening opponent. If Washington loses, the sniping at Ty's job will be going full speed before Labor Day.
Posted by Ty is NOT the guy

The Ty sniping will go on for as long as Ty is the head coach, especially after he announces that the same ol' coaching crew is back and gives the same ol' reasons. Teddy Baer is just about to turn the corner and we need stability, Ty will say. And the Ty lovers will blindly follow. Ty's a lame duck coach and with every blown lead the seat will get hotter. My prediction for the 2008 Huskies: we'll be about one or two plays away from winning 5 games, and get blown out in 3 for a 4-8 season. Way to go Ty!

Thank you seriously, that's a very important statement. You see, what people need to realize, is that we're still a young team. We've got a lot of young players who are still learning the ropes, and our execution isn't always there. But I love our young guys, you've gotta admire their spirit. They're hungry for some wins, and if we just make a few more plays those wins will come. What people need to realize is that nobody wants to win badder than Coach Willingham and his team. Thank you seriously for your support, Coach WIllingham's Huskies don't need to kind of negativity that is on many of these backlogs or blogs or whatever they are. And as seriously mentioned, the PAST is in the PAST, so let's leave it there. Coach Willingham's career record and his 11-25 record with the Huskies is irrelevant heading into next season.

It's not very hard to imagine. You've got an Oregon team that has lost a substantial amount of its starters and has proven that it really doesnt know what its doing without a solid QB.
Washington is coming into the mix with a more experienced Jake Locker combined with what is looking like a really strong O-Line. Brandon Johnson has looked really good this season, and I expect him to shine in 2008, assuming he starts over Hasty. There looks to be some additional speed in the back as well as at WR, and catching could look to be improved as well.
With regards to the coaching, I fail to see any evidence that Bellotti is that superior to TW. His entire team revolved around Dixon, and he showed a complete disregard for his player by having him continue to play on what had already been diagnosed as a torn ACL.
So you've got a team on the downside and a team that is poised to move upward. While I have not been thrilled with TW gameday coaching, and I am certainly no fan of Baer's, I think that when he is under the gun the way he is, he has got to focus on changing something. He must realize that his current system isnt working. If he doesnt, and the Huskies again suffer a losing record, the he gets canned. I wont weep for him.
For now, though, he is the coach. We are less than 2 weeks past the end of the regular season, and people are on here simply stating what every real husky fan knows -- this season hurt. Before it was announced, there was room to complain about getting a new coach. But that argument has been settled. It's fine to criticize him, but he has done nothing but sign strong Washington recruits in the last 2 weeks. I certainly see nothing wrong with that.

I guess nobody here actually watched the Civil War.
Maybe people will take Oregon seriously after watching the Sun Bowl. Their offense will be fine.
I don't think much of Bellotti, but I don't blame him for the Dixon thing. If Locker was in a similar position in his final year, I think must of us would want Jake to decide for himself what to do, just like Dixon did.
Oregon did have 11 underclassmen on the Pac-10 postseason honor roll, so to assume they are losing a ton of talent is shortsighted.

Even if they do lose Stewart as expected, Oregon still has Jeremiah Johnson coming back. Oregon has more talent, better coaching (Chip Kelly over Kent Baer is no contest) and homefield advantage. It will be a tall task.

You forget though Sven, these are the Ty Willingham Huskies! We have fine young men, of course we can beat Oregon! These aren't the Neuheisel Huskies who always lost to the NW schools... oh wait that's right Neuheisel always beat them...

I wish we could get ND to postpone for a few years. I don't like how tough this schedule is. It might be tougher then this years schedule was. Insanity, if you ask me.

I like pushing a game all the way out to 12/6. It's more practice time for out team, and we'll be young. If we don't get to a bowl, it will be vital for team development.

I might want to agree with you on the Willingham bashing. I have been a husky fan for many many years. I follow them year round, inside and out. So it is a good bet that you as a friend of mine can get a good look or answer on a question you may have or the future of the huskies. So many of my friends do just that. I want to say that 70-75% of the people that I spoke to after the willingham hire wanting my thoughts, had brought up the fact that he was black. Wether that was positive(inner city recruiting, which is still a form of racist thinking) or negative(flat out racism) it was still brought up and generally in a negative way. So my guess is that at least 50% of the willingham bashers are either racist, or closet racist, and have wanted willingham gone before he ever took the field. The other 50% are made up of guys with A.D.D. and lack the patience it takes to build a solid product, or in there early 20's and have no idea how this thing really works.
.
You guys can live in denial, but the fact of the matter is this. Yes we stil live in a society that day in and day out, racism plays a huge role in decisions that are made and opinions that are expressed. Wether you want to believe it or not is up to you.

If this stretched-out schedule is going to be a permanent arrangement, we should permanently move the Apple Cup to two Saturdays after Thanksgiving so that it is the last regular season game.

Four fingers down...and ONE finger up to TT for our current schedule! This guy continues to be a moron. Everyday I wait to see what this UW Athletic Dept. is going to do next...there unbelievable! Emmert, put a tent over those guy's and sell some tickets, they make one heck of a circus! And HUSKYTHOR, I am racist...racist over IDIOTS like you posting that crap! If you really have 75% of your friends worried about the fact that TW is black or not, then it's you my friend who has the problem! Because for myself, and I am a season ticket holder and huge Husky follower...have heard NOTHING racist from anyone that I have spoken to...except to say how stupid it is that idiots like you even bring it up. The Apple Cup should be our last game of the season...PERIOD! That is until our bowl game that is! GO DAWGS!

Desert, if you look at the schedule you should be thanking Turner's predecessor. This has already been explained multiple times, so I won't bother explaining it yet again. Bottom line is that Turner recognizes that giving UW the hardest schedule in the nation 2 years in a row while the dawgs are rebuilding is not an ideal situation and he's adjusted as much as he could within reason.

If you want to fix the schedule, ask Todd to drop UW down to the WAC. 3/4 of the schedule is Pac-10 opponents, after all. Those are the teams that are killing Ty.

Don't mind the moving the Oregon game, but really don't like playing a game after the Apple Cup. It just seems to me that the rivalry game should be the last game. Especially of the Pac-10 schedule.

Iowa Husky - I understand the dynamics of our scheduling, and how we came to be where we currently are. I guess I just assume people on this blog recognize that as well. What I am speaking to is the proposed Oregon move, and most directly, the Cal game to end the season. I don't like it at all. And explaining it away as being advantages to play that late into the year, so that if we go to a bowl game that we would stay sharp. I could not disagree more with that statement...it would be MUCH better to have some time off at the end of the season to heal the wounded and prepare for the team your playing in the bowl. FYI, I actually prefer playing tough non-conference teams, it's a bit risky, but it pay's off HUGE if you can win a game against the likes of Ohio State or Oklahoma. The National TV exposure pay's big dividends down the road in recruiting. And when you tell a kid that we have these types of teams on our future schedule...it's GOLDEN! We just need to win a few of them now! GO DAWGS!

I don't care if Baer gets fired...
.
Turner can make the schedule as hard as he wants...
.
Willingham can keep his whole staff, I don't care...
.
Because if they don't win next year...
.
THEY WILL ALL BE FIRED!!!

Fred, I suspected you would say that (ie ty sux therefore we lose). Please feel free to respond with a reply of a semblance of substance.
Sven, I watched the Civil War. I agree with you that Roper looked good for the Civil War. He didn't look great though. And also, if you are going to give him a full assessment, you should look at how he did vs UCLA. He looked horrible. It should be remembered he also was behind a few at the QB position, so that means he has not done much at any other moment. I also know that Oregon hasn't won a game since Dixon went down. No matter how you slice it, the Ducks have HUGE questions about their offense going into next year. Especially if Stewart commits, which I suspect he will.
With this in mind, I'm very happy that the Huskies are catching Oregon at the beginning of the season. That team has some serious bugs to work out.

GO HUSKIES!
That being said, here's something to put in the pipe and smoke. The game we want on the schedule next year is Locker vs. Tebow. Obviously it would be the last game of the season.
And this after Locker wins the Heisman. First time two 'sophomore' winners face off. Doesn't have to be for the NC, but will get all the TV it can handle.
And then throw in the drama surrounding Tyrone Willingham serving his critics a murder of crows, with his new DC Jim Mora helping the Huskies to an amazing 2 loss campaign (UA & ASU). Good god...see now that's fun.
OK, I ruined it with the Mora addition because we know that definitely won't happen. Or will it? Hawks lose to Green Bay (sorry, NFL won't allow GB or Dallas not to go) and then Mora comes on board just in time.
GO DAWGS!

My biggest fear is NOT that Ty gets canned after next season....it is that he gets replaced by a really enegetic, players coach who ends up not knowing how to recruit and finish seasons strong....No, Not Slick RIck, the Kelly guy, Mora, lasted three whole seasons and won 4 of 13 the last two seasons second halfs...our savior...makes me want to give Ty four more years!

I like the schedule changes. With a young defensive team, and young running backs and receivers -- basically a young team with the exception of the O-line -- we need the byes to correct things that go awry. Let's just hope the corrections happen. Go Dawgs!
