Bellotti to UCLA?
Posted by Bob Condotta
So this one came out of the blue --- the Oregonian reports that Mike Bellotti is a candidate for the UCLA job.
The LA Daily News also has some info on Bellotti and UCLA as well as an update on Rick Neuheisel including a quote on what happened at Washington.
The LA Times also has this on Bellotti and UCLA.
So if Bellotti gets the UCLA job, how about Neuheisel to Oregon? I'm not sure the UW-Oregon rivalry could handle that.

The only thing that can make this is any weirder is if UCLA now goes on to interview TW...and then Jim Mora (either the Seahawks secondary coach version or the Saints and Colts former head coach version).

Here's hoping Rick Neuheisel comes out on top on the UCLA coacing sweepstakes. All he did for our Huskies was win a lot of games, take us to the Rose Bowl while adapting his offense to suit the unique talents of Marcus Tuiasusopo(sp?) along the way. Not to mention guiding the team through the Curtis Williams tragedy, saying and doing all the right things. The Holiday Bowl vs a monstrously talented Texas team was one of the best games I have ever seen in person. For those whose sun rises and sets on recruiting, his classes were always highly rated and we almost always had a shot at marque players. Yes, there were some low points, but Don James didn't win 'em all either.
The gambling issue turned out to be the biggest non-issue in the history of the NCAA. Neuheisel did not win $4.7 million from the UofW and the NCAA because of legal technicalities. He was the subject of an NCAA with-hunt and vendetta. The UofW (Hedges) panicked and threw him under the bus. It turned out both the UofW and NCAA did more and slip and slide and dance around the truth. They hid documents, memos, e-mails and flat-out lied, misrepressenting their own rules and regulations. The Seattle Times was culpable. They ambushed the man with microphones in the hallway and launched a series of "guilty as charged" articles with the kind of one-sided editorial vitriol normally reserved for conservative Republicans. It was grossly unfair.
Anyone think this man can't coach? Mark my words. A Neuheisel offense juxtaposed on his recruiting skills backed by a DeWayne Walker defense will be a force to be reckoned with and reckoned with immediately.
Woofman.

No way Belotti leaves. Why would any program hire Newheisel? I would think his past history would settle any talk.

Woofman, yeah thats all Neuheisal did...oh wait no. He won with Lambrights players and then ran this program into the GROUND, just like he did at Colorado before that. I hope UCLA gets him if they are willing to ignore history like that, within 4 years they'll be crumbling from sanctions and poor recruiting.

Holy smokes. Bellotti to UCLA? He is so Oregon that it would make the UCLA game like an Oregon game. Know what I mean, Vern?
And Neuheisel doesn't even need to be in the news to get brought up around here.
So with no other names really being bandied about, it looks like we're in for some more good times folks. C'mon Pac-10.

You said it yourself, my friend. He won. And if Lambright had won more with his own players, he would not have been canned. (Yes, I agree that was unfair.) You think this man can't recruit? The record says otherwise. You think this man can't coach? The record says otherwise. You think this very intelligent individual hasn't learned some lessons in the past 10 years? I think he has. And if he gets that UCLA coaching job, I'll give you odds he will beat us more than we beat him. And I take no pleasure in saying that. Your hatred and disrespect are both wrong and misguided.

Woofman, whatever you're drinking, I'd like some too. Neu-weasel bet on college sports while a current college coach, and not even his current boss (Billick) sees the problem?? What a joke.
While I give him credit for winning the Rose Bowl, he was busy turning our smashmouth-styled Huskies into a WAC finesse team. Look at the yards-per-carry totals from each season he coached the Dawgs - by the last season our running game was long gone. Hello, Hawaii East.
I have no doubts he can inject some life into the Bruins offense if he gets the job, but it will only be a matter of time before it's all pass, all the time, and he winds up getting into some other kind of trouble.
By the way, the whole sympathy card period where he coached Rainier Beach for free after the UW fallout was total bogus. Talk about a desperate plea for positive PR.

Rick was many things here, some good and some bad, but one thing he was not was a great talent evaluator. There's this myth that he was a recruiting superstar, but just take a few minutes and actually look at his classes man for man, and look at how each guy's career turned out vs. how highly they were touted on signing day.
(I'll give you a hint, other than Cody Pickett, Reggie Williams and Tank Johnson, very very few lived up to the hype)

Good Grief! Neuheisel was in an off-campus NCAA basketball pool, which was perfectly legal according to both NCAA regulations and UofW in ternal memos and e-mails. What part of $4.7 million settlement escaped your notice? Do you think that either the UofW or the NCAA would have settled out of court for that kind of money if they thought they had a snowball's chance in Haedes of winning in civil court? Or in the court of public opinion when all the facts were hashed over? Newheisel won because he was innocent. NOT GUILTY.
I don't drink, by the way. Much.

The UW and NCAA tripped over its own legal investigation, allowing the settlement with Slick Rick. The memos from internal UW staff were false - the betting pool was still illegal. Last time I looked, settlements aren't trial verdicts, thus your "not guilty" argument is also flawed.

Ok...Tricky Rick goes to UCLA. Rick fires Walker for secretly harboring desires to play defense.
Knight fires Belotti for blatant brand disloyalty.
Oregon brings in Mike Price to help stabilize the program, and Doba fills in for Price at UTEP. First major change is to get rid of the neon...too many mojo flashbacks.
Belotti hired as commentator on the bowling channel, not catching on until too late that it wasn't a BCS-sponsored league...(please, no "kegler" jokes)
It could happen...
Walker naturally comes to UW...

Regarding the new format.
It's different enough that you'll have to give the readers some time to adapt.
Obviously "Posted by" is not working yet.
Is there any way to increase the font size? Why is it smaller than the font size in the article? That's illogical.
It is hit or miss trying to read captcha, but then I guess you save your comment and send repeatedly until you get a set of characters you can read.
I like having the original article included on the comments page. It's handy for reference purposes.

So, when I just submitted a comment, I was left stranded on a page notifying me that the comment had been submitted. Jumping to that page instead of having no response at all for several seconds is definitely an improvement. But after the comment has been processed, please return me to the blog.

Hi Malibu. I'm still kicking, thanks for asking. I once told a blog buddy that the blog could be a very irritating place, and sometimes it's just better to step away for awhile. So basically, I've been trying to follow my own advice. I was just fed up with reading the same crap fifty times a day from the same posters. I got it the first time. I'm a recruiting fan so I've been spending alot of time following UW, BSU, and Colorado recruiting. Also, I've been reading alot over at Collegefix.Net. If you (or anybody else) ever followed the old P.I. blog, most of them went to the "fix". I highly recommend that people (especially if your over 40) check it out. Some good threads over there. Gets a little snippy between cats, and dawgs, but it's moderated by 2 dawgs, 1 duck, and 1 coug, so they keep things relatively respectful, and under control.
-
Nebdawg, and Rick from Snohomish, I belatedly saw your posts, and appreciated the thoughts.
.
Nebdawg, I was happy to see that Osborne is staying at AD for awhile. Nebraska was my back -up team before BSU, so I still pull for them.
.
Rick, totally agreed with your thoughts. The blog is not about agreeing all the time. As long as the posts have a little common sense, are presented some what respectfully, and aren't repeated fifty times, I appreciate them, and know you do too. Good to hear from you.
.
Jeanne Hannah, enjoyed your post from last week. I remember Mark, from when I was just a wee little dawg totally hooked on the Huskies. Those guys have a special place in my heart. They were bigger than life to me, and I so wanted to be like them. Your post made me dig out my old Huskies books, and spend sometime remembering them. It was alot of fun. My thanks to you, and Mark.
.
Dawgma, you are laying down some good stuff my friend. I had planned on posting at the "fix", but you've been doing such a good job, I just decided to read your stuff, and say good job. You're pretty much saying it for me so, good job.
.
Finally, I ran across this post about Neu, at Don Ruiz's blog. It was posted by PapaHawk. I thought it was pretty entertaining. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
.
Excerpts from interview between UCLA Chancellor and Rick Neuheisel:
Chancellor: Rick, what are your plans for the program when you first get to UCLA?
RN: Excellence, become the beacon of football greatness in the Pacific 10 conference.
Chancellor: About your time at CU and UW, both programs struggled when you left. If I hire you am I going down that road too?
RN: You have already hired me. By granting me an interview you basically have sealed your own fate. Nobody can resist me ... you have no choice. By agreeing to talk in person with me you have already gone there. college administrators cannot resist my boyish charm and optimism. My candor in this situation will make you feel at ease, like I have changed. Even though I can't change everything, you will think I have.
Chancellor: Okay.
RN: When do I officialy start?
Chancellor: You had me at hello.
RN: Anything else I can do for you?
Chancellor: Can you play me a song on your guitar?
.
Thanks, Boise Truth

this finally works!
As far as SLick goes, his recruiting showed to be marginal given the leverage he had. By all data he was a comlete failure when it cam to lineman, especially O line. I don't mean quality, I mean he did not recruit ANY! Remember the spring game they had NO lineman, ( I think 3). The incredible failure that Gilby experienced was DIRECTLY the result of Slicks shortcomings as a recrutiter. (7 receivers, many marginal?) But the worst was his total lack of integrity. He lied, all the time. He was always plaing games, trying for more money and showing no commitment in exchamge. Folks close to the situation say it always felt that he was working a new deal, always. Trust and integrity is kind of important. He is a smart guy, I would assume he has changed. And who cares what an NFL coach says. The NFL is the most low integrity, who cares about anybod organization int he world.
Belotti to UCLA? They should hire him and he should go.

Neuheisel never cared about the actual substance and foundation of his program enough to recruit linemen. He wanted the sexy names and highly rated classes. He won early on because Lambo recruited tough linemen - once they left to graduation, Neuheisel's "skill" players had nobody to run behind.

Bob - you are not moonlighting as a web developer are you? Just kidding.
Woofman - with Nue it was one thing after another - the program was a joke. He may have been a good motivational coach but was no longer viewed as possessing the basic ideals that I hope all our UW coaches are held to. And when it came to recruiting he was more infatuated with stars than heart - the classes he brought in looked good on paper but - with a few exceptions - not on the field. Let's move on.

6:36 AM, Dec 21, 2007
and by the way...I was never a TW booster. He has slowly won me over with the recruiting and improved discipline...and I LOVED the Nue hiring at the time. But I have to say...(deep breath) if I had a choice today, I would pick TW over Slick in a second, no hesitation. As a matter of fact (think about this!) if I was hiring a new UW coach I would pick Bellotti over Mora! It is all about wins, right?
If I was UCLA, Bellotti would be a really solid hiring. I would make that move in a second. I would guess that Bellotti is trying to get some dough, and if he realy is at $1.1m he deserves more. He is under almost the entire upper half of the conference.

Bellotti is just trying to get more money from Oregon or possibly an extension. This is the same thing Schiano and Miles did to Michigan.
Speaking of, English was let go by Rodriguez. He would be a great dc for us, and hope he learns how to defend the spread. Lots of good recruits he could still bring in, and help out the new D-Line we have coming in. With his ties to Seattle (coached under Holmgren for a year), he pulled Schilling away, and almost got Taylor Mays...

Bob, one of the flaws about this new format is the position of the submission box. As you know, we all read and react to each others thoughts and comments. With the submission box at the top, there is a ton of scrolling needed each time the posts start to add up. We read, comment and refresh and read, comment, etc. Its going to be a royal pain to scroll up and down through 100-200 posts to get back to the submission box all the time. Oh, and I know we all would like to be automatically returned to the blog page after submitting comments.

Hey Boise, nice to see you're OK and back with us. Here's what I think is going on, and my sources are once removed so it's mostly just my call. Rick N. is obviously the pick for alums and former players. But the chancellor (an academic, not a jock) is still uncomfortable about his past. He needs an out. Enter Bellotti. I think the job is Bellotti's if he wants it and it could happen. His buy-out at Oregon is "only" $350,000. He's sort of run his course at Oregon and the post-Dixon era doesn't look to promising. '
'
Rick to Oregon? I don't think so. His past still haunts him big-time. The "UCLA" on his resume is the only reason he is hot with the Bruins. Then again, if you remember, he did cozy up to Oregon a few years back when he sat in the press box for a few games, etc. But I say, no way Oregon want to touch him. That's my take.

RN destroyed both programs he coached. He is a "soft" coach. He was the "friend" to the players (river rafting, warm fuzzy campfires, etc.). The UW became "camp feelgood"...and you see what happened to the program.
Kids need someone to look up to and respect. Someone who brings discipline and authority to the program. I believe that TW is the right man for UW. Been a dog for over 40 years and I am 100% behind TW.
We haven't had very good luck with UCLA. I can guarantee you that if RN is hired, we will start beating UCLA on a regular basis.
If Bellotti stays at Oregon you have to wonder whether this will hurt the him and team. I say it will.
We got bigger fish to fry....like getting a DC.

Although it is true that sarcasm is incredibly difficult to pull of successfully on the internet, where tone and inflection of voice cannot provide key information.

Bob. I agree with some other posters. The comment box at the beginning makes it hard to stay with the conversation. You have to scroll up and down, etc. The thing that makes this blog so much better than any other is the "conversation" nature of it. It is not just your story, then comments on it (like most other blogs). Here, your story/blog entry ignites a conversation with a lot of back and forth, and people jumping in with good info and links. I hope we don't lose that. I know it is better organized this way, but it invites the quick comment this way (like other blogs) instead of the "conversation" format that made this the best college football blog in the USA. Maybe the techies there can figure something out.

The talents of the weasel as far as recruiting were never better displayed than our season opener at Ohio State in 2003. Our lines were PATHETIC. Having Reggie Williams did not matter, when all american defensive lineman went unblocked up the gut right into Pickett's face. Then our anemic running game was easily stifled, and we threw on most plays, and ineffectively at that. The weasel is fool's gold. This recruiting class is far more balanced than anything he ever put together. I hope ucla gets him because we'll be shredding their lines in about 2 years time.
