Locker to start, more on offense

Posted by Bob Condotta

We had our weekly meeting with offensive coordinator Tim Lappano, who said flat-out that Jake Locker will be the starting quarterback for the Huskies Saturday, which should remove any last doubt about that issue.

Lappano said Locker has recovered well from the neck strain suffered last week at Oregon State.

"You guys saw him warming up, right?'' Lappano said, referring to the warmup period before the Cal game. "He was really throwing it pretty good.''

Lappano said after the win over Cal that he liked the look of the power-running game that the Huskies showed against the Bears, and while he wouldn't say so Tuesday, the implication seems to be that a lot of that stuff will remain, possibly as a way to ease Locker back into the lineup a little bit.

That doesn't mean that there will be any reluctance to run any of the spread option stuff with Locker, just that it may make some sense to take some of that pressure off of him this week.

Lappano said in the wake of the Oregon State injury that UW coaches are trying to emphasize with Locker even more the importance of avoiding contact when possible, and that what happend in Corvallis figures to have further ingrained that point with Locker, as well.

"Unless the game is on the line and we need him to fall for a first down I want him to get out of bounds, I really do,'' Lappano said, pointing out that Locker was injured in the first half against OSU. "That early in the game I'd rather punt it or get another play dialed up rather than have him take a shot he doesn't need to take. Hopefully he can do that.''

Lappano said the team will still call a lot of inside runs for Locker, where contact is unavoidable. But Locker was hurt on a scramble on what was originally a pass play.

"You can be smarter when you get forced out of the pocket,'' Lappano said. "You've got to know when to get down. ... I think when he's on the sidelines now you'll see him opt to get out of bounds rather than stick his foot on the ground and go back inside and take somebody on (which is what happened against Oregon State).''

On some other matters:

--- Lappano said he likes the recent play of the offensive line saying it is getting "a lot more consistent. ... We're not seeing the huge ups and downs that we saw a year ago.'' Still, he said there remains "a lot of room for growth'' up front.

--- Said the Cougars will blitz about 52-54 percent of the time, similar to Stanford, and that those two teams bring the most blitzes of any in the conference. Said that similar to Stanford, that means the Cougars figure to get the Huskies a few times, but that the converse is that there will be opportunities for UW to hit some big plays, as well, saying "we'vve got to make them pay'' when they bring pressure. He said the average Pac-10 team brings pressure 22-23 percent of the time.

--- Said the difference in the two teams is that the Cougars bring their blitzes from a lot of different places than did Stanford, saying WSU's linebackers "are crawling all over the line of scrimmage, crawling all over the place, and that creates some problems.'' But he said a good antidote for that is a mobile quarterback. But he said "we've got to be at the top of our game to know where all those guys are.'' Lappano said a few sacks by Cal on blitzes Saturday were mostly the result of blocking errors by the backs, something that will have to get fixed this week, as well.

--- Lappano praised the play of backup RB Brandon Johnson and said his 121-yard outing against Cal was "really important'' heading into the future with Johnson a contender for the starting job next season with Louis Rankin set to graduate. Lappano said he especially liked Johnson's attitude and readiness Saturday saying "he was giving all the right vibes in that game.''

--- Lappano said the misdirection reverse plays were something UW put in last week knowing that it wouldn't have Locker and wanting to cross up the defense a bit from being able to just rear back to defend against the two-back attack. He said UW has had some of that in the offense previously but admitted that seeing how well it worked for Oregon State the previous week "influenced it a little bit, too. ... You can't stay the same all the time.'' Lappano said he liked the look of it, lamenting that one reverse to Curtis Shaw might have gone for a touchdown had it not been for a UW time out that was needed to avoid a delay penalty. "It was pretty effective,'' he said of the scheme. "It wasn't window dressing.''

--- Said keeping emotions in check this week is a big part of dealing with rivalry games. "If you get too emotional, it can hurt you,'' he said. Having been an assistant at WSU for five years, he said he knows how the Cougars will be up for the game. "I was there five years so I know what this game is about,'' he said.

--- Said he likes the way recruiting is going and that if the Huskies can win a couple more games it could lead to even better news.

I'm starved for recruiting info. Bob, what can you tell me outside of what is shown on Rivals and Scout?

from Dash's piece on ESPN website: Former Washington defensive tackle Steve Emtman (39), leader of the Huskies' 1991 national championship defense. Emtman was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1992 NFL draft but never lived up to it. Anyone with information on the extremely wide lineman, please apprise The Dash.

brandon johnson looked like the real deal, hopefully we'll get to see more of him this weekend.

BJ is a stud...his speed, explosiveness thru the hole and the way he carried the pile..a good back can make a line proud.

i would be shocked if brandon johnson isn't the starter next year. he should add another 10 pounds or so and have alot more strength.the power game looks good for 2008 especially if garcia returns at center

Bob, what's going on with JR Hasty now? I would assume the reason he came back is he thought he would get a shot.

Don't forget about Willie Griffin. He's red-shirting and I'd hate to try to tackle him as a LB. Think he's 5'8 or 5'9" and should be at least 200 pounds next year as a RS-Frosh.

Husky football, Lappano, Husky football.

Yes, the gadget plays will work-- but mainly because they aren't expected because what opponents mostly have to worry about is getting smash-mouth and run over play after play by a punishing power running game out of the I and the pro set. THAT is Husky football.

The less I see of the "spread" the more I like this offense. We want more blockers to the point of attack and fewer defenders. Hope everyone saw how our receivers cut off backside pursuit & took the secondary out of so many plays against Cal. Homer was devastating! For once we did to the other team what TOSU, UCLA & ASU have been doing to us. Looked good, felt good. Let's have some more of that man-style football and less of this nancy-boy razzle-dazzle and misdirection crap.

Go Huskies!!

This is in response to Peter80s post a couple of threads back in regards to TW's Pac-10 record. I seriously questioned his numbers so I had to check it out. Then I couldn't reply at work so I had to wait til I got home. According to Stanford's web site, his record in seven seasons as head coach there from 1995-2001 (I didn't realize he was there that long) was 44-36-1 over all and 32-25 in the Pac-10 with four bowl games. In 1999 they were 7-1 in conference, 8-4 overall, including an appearance in the 2000 Rose Bowl. In 2001 they were 9-3 overall, 6-2 in the conference, and played in the Seattle Bowl. That sounds like pretty good numbers to me. I remember that my opinion of TW at the time, while admittedly from afar, was that he must be a pretty good coach to have that kind of success at Stanford. As it turns out, he had the best record at that school since the days of Pop Warner, far better than both Bill Walsh and Dennis Green. He coached on both of their staffs at Stanford and in 1991 went with Green to Minnesota to be on the Vikings Staff.

Stanford has to be one of the most difficult places in the conference to recruit to, especially in football where you need to recruit so many good athletes to compete. You need at least twenty-two top flight players as starters in addition to quality depth. If you have even the slightest weakness anywhere the other teams will eat you up. Then it becomes even more challenging if they all have to be very smart and excellent students as well. The UW has some pretty high standards too, but not that high. When the Huskies hired TW, I remember thinking that if he could recruit such competitive teams at Stanford, he is going to recruit some great teams here. My opinion of him now that I've seen him in action, up close, has not changed at all. He has had two very good recruiting years and is having another one this year. I think if given a chance, he is going to prove to be an excellent UW football coach (Notice it was his fifth year at Stanford when they really started to excel).

Read his bio on the UW website. It confirms everything I read on the Stanford site and shows what a truly amazing football pedigree this man actually has. Anyone that wants to fire this coach without giving him the time and opportunity to succeed has got to be crazy. Quit listening to the nonsense from the Notre Dame nut cases and support your football coach. You have a good one.

Why even respond to the Ty haters? They are almost delusional in their evalutation of the team. How can anyone say that there hasn't been progress after the Cal game is beyond me. That was the first time in years that I could see hope. Like a lot of other posters here, it seems obvious that most of them are Duck and Coug fans, or have another uglier agenda.

Apple Cup, Snapple Cup - who cares? It is the perennial battle of the last place teams, again. I'll watch, as it should be a big battle, but for PAC-10 football, again both are irrelevant. Bragging rights? Darn right! Winner can shout, "we're number 9, we're nuber 9!"

Two of the five running backs are going to be DB's (Gobern & Tate).

Prince is going on a mormon mission & won't be in a program for two years.

Scout.com has some visits listed for the Apple Cup. Since Solomon, Ta'amu & Thompson are considered big husky leans maybe they'll commit & convince Middleton. Wishful thinking.

Shane we return:

WR

Shaw SO
Goodwin SO
Boyles RS-FR
Aguilar RS-FR
Logan RS-FR
Hawkins JR

Recuits: Jordan Polk (verbal), Carl Moore (JC-AA just visited during Cal game), Jermaine Kearse (will visit, HS teammate of Middleton), Bruns (50-50 between U-dub & WSU), Tyrone Ward (Husky lean from Michigan), Chris Polk (soft verbal for USC could be RB or WR), Keith Stroud (postgraduate would be eligible for spring), Juron Criner (having big senior year might be on radar), & AJ Pickens (was supposed to visit but had said we weren't super interested). If we don't get Moore we'll likely go after another JC. Even as untested as we are I still only seeing one true freshman breaking into the rotation next year if he shines. Otherwise, we're better off giving them a year to run routes & hit the weights. WR is a position of precision. I like the Baggett hire though, & think we're good in the long run with Boyles & Shaw as potential stars. Add Moore & Kearse to that mix (the others aren't slouchs either) & we could be especially dangerous in 2009. Chris Polk, too, is a diffference maker at either RB or WR, whoo would we be looking good if we wrapped up a majority of some of these guys. For the record, I still think a bowl game is in the cards for 2008 even with another brutal schedule.

TE

Johnie Kirton SR
Michael Gottlieb SR
Walt Winter SR
Chris Izbicki RS-FR

Recruits: Kavario Middleton (would likely be immediate starter & offensive weapon underneath), Demetrius Guice (big fast athlete 50-50 between us & Cal), Raphael Washington (really big, has offer), Chris Washington (no offer), Skylar Stormo (no offer), & Anrei Lintz (no offer). Might only take one here still & go JC next year for depth. If Middleton commits we are loading Jake up with enough bullets he could be the nice guy alter ego of Dirty Harry.

While I still think we can do better than Ty, I like the team. A better scheme defensively (ie a new coordinator, my vote is for John Blake give him the big bucks after Butch goes to Arkansas & recruit the studs) & maturation for Jake will yield some prime seasons.

Tyrone has done nothing for the program. This team could be 8-3 with a better coach. Our lack of aggression on defense is a direct reflection on the coaches lack of passion and enthusiasm on the sidelines.

Any Huskie fan or alumni who is happy with Ty needs to start rooting for WSU. His win percentage at UW is 32%. That is pathetic!! Who cares what he did for Stanford??? Anything less than 9 wins is unacceptable. Would LSU, Tennessee, Texas, Ohio St. or Oklahoma allow Tyrone to stay for another year? Not on your life. Phillip Fulmer is going to get fired for averaging only 71% wins. FIRE TYRONE IMMEDIATELY - WE NEED TO HIRE ANOTHER COACH BEFORE THE HEAVY RECRUITING SEASON STARTS.

Ty was hired for 5 years. He wasn't hired for 3 years. Anyone else get this? He hasn't lost the program, he has managed to keep the NCAA off our back. Just my 2 cents. There is no way that the UW can fire him anyway. We would like a joke nationally. Notre Dame keeps their joker Weis but we fire Ty when he has a better record this year. That would be insane. Ty has turned this program around. The California game among others, has convinced me of this. I am starting to believe that there are a lot of half-brained internet types.

Will Aguilar and Boyles be red shirt freshmen next year or true freshmen? Since they didnt enroll for the fall? It seems like they should be freshmen? Anyone know?

Recruits --- They will be true frosh. The eligibility clock doesn't begin until a player enrolls in school.

As for Hasty, have no idea other than the obvious --- he was third team for performance reasons before he briefly left and hasn't worked his way back since returning. Hard to argue what Brandon Johnson did the other day.

We will have a great shot at winning the Pac-10 next year. Most of the top teams will lose many Seniors. USC will have more experience, but I am now see a ripple in their system. We are starting a freshman at QB. I can't even think of the last Pac-10 team that won with a freshman at QB. Locker is going to lead this team back. I just hope some of you "Eeyore's" will be happy when we get to a major bowl.

Passion, that is what we need. Ty deserves to finish his contract. I would have liked to see more progress, but I must admit the last 5 quarters I have liked to see the kids playing with passion and smash mouth attitude--that hit on the goal was my favorite of the year!

TW would be well advised to replace the TE/special teams coach--he has been a disaster in more ways than one.

And Baer's defense has been let down by his coaching, if Ty wants to stay beyond five it is time to get some more passionate coaches--I hate to lose!!

TomS-- "Tyrone has done nothing for the program. This team could be 8-3 with a better coach."

I want some of whatever TomS has been imbibing. I'm a big Husky booster & think that there were games during the 0-6 skid that could/should have been won. But 8-3? Now that's what I would call optimism-- retroactive, but still very rosy.
