Locker talks

Posted by Bob Condotta

Jake Locker met the media here a little while ago and said he hopes to play Saturday against Cal.

"I'd like to, so I'm going to try as hard as I can,'' Locker said, saying it was "not out of the realm of possibility'' that he will see the field against Cal.

Locker said his biggest health concern right now is a stiff neck, and his injury was obvious during his press conference as he struggled to turn.

"My neck is just kind of tight right now, so I've got to get that movement back and that's what we are focusing on this week,'' Locker said. "I've just got to try to get some of that mobility back because that will be the quickest way to get back on the field.''

UW coach Tyrone Willingham said in his press briefing earlier that Locker was progressing quickly but that he would be held out of practice today to continue his rehab. Wednesday's practice, which will likely be UW's only full pads practice this week, figures to be the key one for Locker.

Willingham said Carl Bonnell will take the starter's reps today with true freshman Ronnie Fouch taking the backup reps.

Locker admitted that the events of Saturday, when he was carried off the field on a stretcher and taken by ambulance to a local hospital after a hard hit by Oregon State's Al Afalava, were frightening.

"That was a scary situation Saturday for me,'' he said. "I've not really had anything
like that happen me, I guess. That's part of the game. It happens. I understand that, and I think everybody who plays understands that. I don't think you can be scared. I'm sure, I'm 100 percent positive, that the team physician won't let me play if I'm not physically ready. So if they tell me I'm okay and I feel okay, I trust them and I trust myself that I'm okay to play.''

Asked to recall the incident, Locker said:

"It was third down and I couldn't find anything open so I was trying to scamble so I knew I need four or five more yards. I could have run out of bounds but I tried to get extra yards and I just kind of remember colliding with the guy. And then I went down and tried to push myself up and kind of just rolled over on my left side and I couldn't move my left arm, and that's when it scared me a little bit. And my neck, I felt a little pinch in the back of my neck, so that's when I worried a little bit. But once I was able to move my arms I felt better about it. But I still had the pain in my neck. But by then I was on the stretcher and in the ambulance.''

Locker said he did not think Afalava meant to hurt him.

"We did hit helmet-to-helmet, but I don't think he had any intention of leading with the helmet trying to take me out,'' Locker said. "I don't think he had any intention of that. We had seen on the film all week that he played hard and he hit guys and I think that's what he was trying to do, come up and make a big hit. It's like I said before, it's football and that kind of stuff happens. Unfortunately it had to happen that way. But I don't believe in any way that he was intentionally trying to do that.''

Locker, who returned to the field in the final minutes after being released from the hospital, said he talked with Afalava briefly after the game.

"He came up to me after the game and asked me how I was feeling and he was really pretty cool about the situation,'' Locker said.

Locker said the incident wouldn't change the way he plays the game.

Asked if next time he might just duck out of bounds instead of trying to get extra yards, Locker said "to be totally honest, probably not.''

COMMENT --- My hunch, just watching Locker struggle to turn his neck to answer questions, is that it's probably more on the unlikely side that he'll play this week, especially since he would probably have to be able to practice Wednesday to be ready. But we'll see. Willingham said earlier it's "day-to-day.''

Bob, I wonder how similar this injury is to "whiplash"? Or perhaps better said, something less than whiplash, but potentially could have been. I was rear-ended on the freeway in 1988, and while I did not have whiplash I was very stiff and sore for about 3-4 days and had trouble turning my head. The doctor said that if the collision had been at a higher speed, I probably would have had that injury. I wonder if the training staff could comment on that. In any event, I can certainly relate to Jake's situation and after the first few days it does clear up pretty fast.

There is absolutely no reason for Jake to play Saturday. Let him rest.

"There is absolutely no reason for Jake to play Saturday. Let him rest."

My thoughts exactly. Even if we win out we're not going to a bowl game. Would winning out help recruiting? It's all anecdotal, but probably not a heck of a lot. Sadly, once again, our season will be considered a success based on the outcome of the Apple Cup.

GO DAWGS!!

1. Let Locker recuperate.
2. I just read the Fresno/Hawaii link - as a result, I'd never attend a game there, and I hope many others will save their money as well.
3. If the crowd is as depicted, and I have no reason to doubt it, could someone get the TV crew to pan the crowd from time to time, and catch any violence on record, so that criminal/civil charges could be brought and substantiated as needed?

Locker please for your future and health, let Bonnell finish the season out.

just read the Hawaii article - WOW, totally nuts. UH is just begging to get sued over this. How can there be police officers there, but not anywhere near the visitor's section? Clearly negligence on the part of UH.

No way Locker sits for the rest of the year. I think he should take this week off, get healthy, and finish the season with a surge.
I'm actually excited to see what Bonnell can do with a week to prepare for his start. Cal is ripe for another loss.

Plenty of sense in saying he might play. This will make it tougher for Cal to prepare.

My guess is that they are putting Locker in the depth chart to give Cal some doubt that he might be able to start. Game planning for Locker and Bonnell are two mostly different things.

Hawaii link:

http://fresnostate.scout.com/2/700719.html

It reminds me of sitting in the LA Coliseum as a Seahawks fan during the AFC Championship game against the Raiders. Only time I have felt in danger at a game. Fortunately my buddy that went to the game with me was a competitive weightlifter.

As to Jake, I think he should make his own decision (with the doctors of course). One thing about school sports, whether it is high school or college, is that one's time there is very short and very perishable. Obviously Jake loves his school, his team, and his teammates; and their time together is over in the blink of an eye (as any crying senior on senior day who will tell you as such). Every game is precious as there are so few of them. I have always hoped each player would treasure every moment of their career and never take a game off. They're gone way too soon.

Of course, health is the biggest factor here.

Again Willingham pretends that his not answering the question about Jake starting will make a difference.

I can imagine what's going through Tedford's mind right now: "Oh no, they might start Bonnell...or if they start Jake and he has an all-world game...we'll still win because their defense sucks."

Whatever...who cares what Willingham has to say...focus more on Jake since he's the one that will be here next year.

Thank you for posting the Hawaii Article. I've noticed watching games on TV there that the stadium there may be in a rough neighborhood. I feel real bad for the Fresno fans, they have been very nice and respectful to us on their last two trips to Husky stadium. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have started anything out of the ordinary.

We are still making the trip, over there. Hopefully, the Dawgs win and ruin their unbeaten season. I know that could make things crazy as a fan of UW, but I have to believe that we will travel better than Fresno did, and strength comes in numbers. Most of the Hawaii packages were purchased before the season began.

P.S. Get well soon Jake! We are all praying for you!

Chris Miller I travel to a lot of games. Traveling Huskies could out number them 10 to 1 and we would still be in trouble. Not to demean the fans but we are OLD. I can't imagine my 87 pound mother taking on a 350 somoan. Even with help. Be safe and hope for a win.

Chris Miller-- Be sure to take your raingear . . . and a hard hat . . . to the Hawai'i game. They'll come in handy when it starts raining beer and beer bottles containing an amber liquid that is not beer (at least not unrecycled beer).

Someone remind me-- what's the translation of "aloha"?

I am "Pro" Locker playing this next week - As long as he is cleared and feels ok. You are right that there is nothing left of this season to salvage, however with the redshirt year gone by and 10 games into this one the experience factor needs to be built upon while there are games available. Granted most of his growth will come in the off-season, the seeds of that growth can be planted in experiences he gathers from each game - and the more games he get gets in, the most growth can be realized. If he sits the next three weeks, by next Autumn he has essentially 10 games over about a three year period - he needs more time to mature in real-game situations. If there is real potential for serious injury then he should definetly sit - even if he feels he cant play at 100%. But if he is ready to go I say let him in.

Regarding the link to that Fresno St article about the Hawaii Fans being out of control, I can confirm that to be true. I was born and raised in Hawaii but went to school at UW, was a walk-on at UW, lived in Washington for 9 years before moving back to Hawaii.

Hawaii Fans are the absolute worse fans especially compared to UW fans. Unfortunately a SMALL HANDFUL of nasty fans make the rest look bad, not all fans are bad. UH tried to ban alcohol consumption at games since there were so many drunk fans and fights. They threatened to ban alcohol and were threatened with a loss of attendance to games. You see UH has been historically bad and the turn out is usually in the 15,000 range. Ever since June Jones arrived about 8 years ago and the teams have become better, attendance has increased to about 30,000 to 35,0000. If they banned alcohol UH risked losing ticket holders. I have been a season ticket holder since I returned to Hawaii and over the last 7 years I have been to maybe 4 games in total. I can't stand the atmosphere and the
classless fans, it is embarrassing.

The UW game will be a little different as there are over 3000 UW alumni and much more family that will attend. Unlike Fresno St, there will be much more support for UW then Fresno. But I still predict there will be fights and nasty remarks at the UW fans that traveled to Hawaii. Main thing to remember is to ignore the comments and cussing. If you look or acknowledge, you will be greeted with much harsher treatment each time.

I am finally going to go to the UW/UH game, the first of the season for me even though I have season tickets on the 50 yard line and I pay over $350 a seat but still refuse to go. I will be cheering on the UW team.

Also for all the UW fans that travel, please do not let the game night ruin Hawaii for you. Come early in the week and do some sightseeing, it is a beautiful place and the weather should be nice. Even in December the temperature should be in the 80's and sunny. Visit the beaches, go shopping, take in a hike on Diamond Head and eat at the fabulous restaurants in Hawaii.

Frustration is never a good reason for precipitous change. It is tempting to see a change of coaches as the solution, but that will not magically produce better results. We don't need a cheerleader. Don James was a very aloof and cerebral personality who valued discipline, organization and preparation above all else. Willingham may yet prove himself to be a great coach in the mold of Don James. The next two years will tell, as the current crop of underclassmen matures. Recruiting will be aided by Locker's persence now and by his exceptional play next year. The UW is properly committed to giving Willlingham every chance to succeed. A great institution should keep its word. In the long view, there is cause for optimism.
