ASU CB says Sun Devils need to hit Locker

Posted by Bob Condotta

As some of you may have already heard, Arizona State cornerback Justin Tryon was on KJR-AM today with Dave Mahler and said that the whole key to the game for the Sun Devils is to get tough with UW quarterback Jake Locker.

Here's a link to that interview.

Tryon said if the Sun Devils can hit Locker hard on every play, "it's an easy win at that point.''

Tryon said of Locker that "he is their whole offense.''

UW players aren't available today so there won't be any reaction to this until Saturday, though how they play Saturday may be the best indicator of what that reaction is.

Tryon is the same player who returned an interception for a touchdown against WSU Saturday and held the ball aloft most of the way, earning a taunting penalty.

Seems like ASU is beginning to be like Miami when Erickson was there. For all Dawg fans that need a little jolt. Here is a great link to the '98 game. GO DAWGS!!!!! http://youtube.com/watch?v=Uv5tKP8vG90

Ahh yes..
Mr. Trash is back with nice locker room motivation for the Dawgs...
I love his comment in the interview, that after showboating for 70 yards @ Wazzu when he pick-sixed them, he went to the sideline, got chewed by Drunk Erickson and told him "listen man, that's football"...
---NO you idiot, getting your team a big 15 yard penalty when the kickoffs have already been moved back this year is DUMB, it's not "football"...it's your "inflated ego" and lack of discipline.

Ahh, bullentin board fodder, I've always found that it's a great motivator when a team gets called out like that.

Thanks Bob!

Nice to get some bulletin board material from those guys! If that is what it takes to fire up the RB's/WR's, I'll take it!

Everyone always talks about Erickson teams and a lack of discipline. I agree with that. However, I wouldn't mind the Dawgs getting a penalty here or there if we get a chance to send a message to the other team.

I'm not advocating a flagrant foul or anyting dispicable, but it would be great to see these guys show some emotion and take the fight to the opponent. If that aggressiveness causes a penalty, so be it. The net result might be added emotion and ultimately, a conference road victory.

Our OL has to take that as a personal challenge to win the trenches and be more physical. Remember the days when it didn't matter what RB we stuck back there because the OL was so good?

Our big men (OL) need to go after ASU and put'em on their heels.

Hopefully they'll play with passion. It shouldn't take a comment like this to lead to that. I think the Dawgs are fired up coming out of the bye and are ready to go regardless. Honestly, I think all teams have come to that conclusion. It's harder to do than people think to take him out. However, he's got to be smart. He's got to take the scramble when it's there, and get down when he can. He's also got to complete his passes which takes heat off of him, and allow him to stay clear of cheap shots. I think he'll be fine.

GO DAWGS!!!

Bob- Any news on possible recruits that may be attending this game? The biggest AZ guy we are going after is Ray Polk out of Phoenix. Hopefully he will see how he can come in and help our running game right away.

Could we have asked for better material to fire the Dawg up? Baer, LET THE DAWGS OUT! On offense, let's take the reins off the offense and let DAWGS RUN WILD!

I dont know if you guys heard this interview earlier but Mr. Tryon is definitely not the sharpest tools in the shed. Most of Softy's questions during the interview were never answered and kept referring to Softy's as boss. I thought that he sounded very ignorant and disrespectful. This guy needs to go to class and learn how to talk. Not very impressed!!!

Here's my much-anticipated pick for this week. UW 38, ASU 10. Let me explain.

The year was 1977 and the murmurs from Husky stadium were becoming audible. A new head coach: relative no-name Don James was in his third season after two years of inconsistent football. There was the fleet footed and cannon-arm quarterback, Warren Moon, who had yet to develop as a passer. His scrambling ability and runaway foot speed were exciting glimpses, but as often as not, he killed offensive momentum with his chronic overthrows, interceptions, and fumbles. Then there was the porous defense which seemed to have talent but was so often plagued by inexplicable breakdowns. So when the Huskies opened the year 1-3, it seemed for all the world like another lost season, the third such season in a row.

The fifth game of the year was a road trip to Eugene, Oregon in early October. It was envisioned as a lackluster matchup of PAC-8 also-rans. Rich Brooks, head coach of Oregon was in his first year. Neither the Ducks nor the Huskies seemed to have a chance for even a winning season, much less a conference title. Both schools and their new coaches seemed to be embarking on a familiar adventure, one of annual losses to the California schools, difficult recruiting, and frustrated boosters. No one, not even Coach James, had any notion of what would happen next.

After two seasons and four games, something finally clicked for the Huskies. Moon's former interceptions and errant passes became pinpoint strikes to open receivers. The running backs began to slash through gaping holes opened by a punishing offensive line. The defense suddenly looked big, fast and physically dominant. It was a complete football game which could only be fully explained by the final score: Huskies 54, Ducks 0. But it was more than just a surprising day, more than just a well-played game. It was more than just the beginning of a Rose Bowl run. It was the birth of a program and the beginning of a dynasty.

Let's get it started, again. Go Dawgs!

I sincerely hope the 5'10 180 Tryon brings more than himself to the party if he intends to lay a hit on Locker or he might get knocked out of the game himself.

probably not the brightest thing to say on his part. . . and I'm not defending him. . . but isn't he simply stating the obvious???

I agree... I think Locker should knowck this guy on his butt if he gets the chance. Not really for anything other than the fact that Locker will pump up this whole team to a point that UW couldn;t lose.

i just hope the whole team shares his thoughts on how "easy" it will be to beat the dawgs. it would be a nice opportunity for the huskies to showcase what they have been working on the past two weeks. if they feel like they've already got it, that's right where we want them. let's hope we can give them a rude awakening!

did any of you guys actually listen to the interview...or are you simply taking condotta at face value when he says the kid's gameplan was to take locker out of the game?

i listened to the interview...

tryon actually said that they need to contain locker and hit him when they can and softy INSERTED "you mean take locker out of the game" not once, but twice. twice softy paraphrased the kid's gameplan of merely playing physical with "you mean take locker out of the game".

bob misinterpreted this and softy is bush league.

I agree with Rickdawg but not for nostalgic reasons. This is a sentinal game for the Huskies. A ranked team on the road. The Huskies have all the tools to win and make an impression on all of college football. The team really thinks it can go undefeated the rest of the season. This game needs to be one where execution and opportunity signal the return of hard nosed Husky teams of the future. If we do not make as strong showing with a WIN it will be a long rest of the season! Now is the chance to show that things are different from the last four years.

rickdawg, you just got me pumped for Saturday. It has been kind of hard reading all the "Willingham sucks" and "fire Willingham" type of talk this past week. I'm not a huge fan of the guy, but let's give him a real shot at this thing. I don't think any real evaluation can be made for another year or two. Recruiting takes time, and it seems that the classes have been getting better and better since he arrived. We all want to see results on the field. Let's hope it begins against ASU.

Me too, rickdawg. Nice one! What a huge win this would be for us! Wow, would it set up a great situation going into the game with the Quacks. We need this one!

Rickdawg???!!! The 1977 team had Michael Jackson and Doug Martin and Joe Steele, and Spider Gaines, etc....we have NO ONE! We don't have playmakers and speed and a senior QB who started slow, but came on in the end.... We have a freshman who is LAST in the PAC 10 in passing and total O. This game may be 38-10, but not in favor of UW.

Re the cheap shots on Jake: They will continue until Willingham let's the league know it won't be tolerated. He better be working the officials pre game on Saturday. Sometimes he is so laid back I think he's in a coma. He needs to show some grit on this topic...

Mick is 100% correct. Obvious attempt by Softy to stir the pot. What a joke. True, Tryon is a complete ignoramous (if he said "and what not" one more time I might have killed myself) but by no means was he implying that ASU's game plan was to "take out" or injure Locker. In fact, he was extremely complimentary of Locker's ability.

Tryon is an idiot, but Softy was the instigator here...as per usual.

Man you guys are desperate if this is what counts as bulletin board material. Nothing he said was insulting, rude, or even incorrect - as many UW fans obviously agree.

And Tryon apologized profusely for showboating on that pick-6.

Here's a question for you dogs, how many picks will Locker throw tomorrow? Please tell me you don't honestly think it will be 0 or even 1, my guess is 4.

And another thing. Before Erickson, ASU was frequenlty no. one or two in penalties. Remember all calls of dirty play after that Robert James hit on Lienart? We're actually IMPROVING in term of penalties with this new coach, even with essentially the same players who played under Koetter. All this hype about Erickson's teams being dirty or out of control is just that - hype.

PdxDevil, Tryon is a punk, plain and simple. I saw the game and yes, Erickson chewed him out after the play, but c'mon, you just don't do that. That is the most classless thing to do. Taunting has no place in college or pro football. It's easy for him to have remorse after the game but the coach has to install that attitude in spring/fall camp. There isn't a SINGLE player on the UW team that would do that. The point is that Erickson's teams have ALWAYS had players that think nothing of committing dirty plays. Look at any team he has coached, including the NFL...
