Olson sitting out UCLA practice

Posted by Bob Condotta

Interesting news out of UCLA this afternoon that quarterback Ben Olson is not practicing, with Brian Dohn of the LA Daily News reporting that it may be because of a concussion.

With UCLA coaches available after practice, more should be known in a few hours.

UCLA's listed backup is McLeod Bethel-Thompson, a redshirt freshman who has yet to play. But the real backup is junior Pat Cowan, who is the son of former UW quarterback Tim Cowan. Pat Cowan is listed third on the depth chart because he has been out with a hamstring injury. I talked to Cowan earlier in the day and he told me he could play this week if needed.

"I feel good,'' he said.

Pat Cowan was the QB when UCLA upset USC last year.

UW PRACTICE NOTES:

--- The practice began with linebackers coach Chris Tormey telling his players to "have a good mental day.'' That fit with the theme of the week, which is that the Huskies made too many mistakes in the Ohio State game.

--- CB Byron Davenport was not in red but was wearing a scout team number. He was last through all the drills and appeared to be giving it a good go but it was hard to tell if he was going all out. LB Dan Howell appeared to be moving around pretty good, as was RB Brandon Johnson. We should get a better idea of the injury picture tomorrow from Tyrone Willingham.

Sorry to hear that Olson has a concussion, but it will change some of the game if he cannot play. Of course, Cowan is a seasoned QB, as Bob notes.
Utah succeeded with them by bringing lots of pressure. With it obvious that we cannot leave McDowell alone with a UCLA receiver, it will be hard for us to bring as much pressure as we'd like, but I am sure we will see the LB's bringing it.

Hopefully Gunheim can get more tackles than Locker this week.

Hey guys, go to the link Bob gives for the UCLA blog, and click on the comments. Interesting that the Daily News beat guy feels the need to censor his commenters and then responds back to them telling him why he censored it. Thanks Bob for allowing a robust and fun blog allowing leeway for comments, and especially for not preaching back to us like that L.A. writer. We really appreciate your work, and your style!

Ha Ha. The UCLA reporter calls his own blog commenter "classless." Unbelieveable. No wonder there are only a few comments for each of that guy's blog. Talk about classless?

I don't always believe what Lappano says, but I hope Goodwin and a #2 RB really see some action Saturday. With UCLA's tight, man to man in the secondary, we need someone to stretch the field. Seems like our receivers really struggle to get off the line and open against that type of defense.

Dang I kind of feel for UCLA. It seems every year they have a ton of injuries. So far UW has been quite fortunate in this department with exception to DB. Hopefully it continues because we are still at the stage where we lack depth in quite a few areas.

Billy Jose Camara and Cougar Pride would fit right in over at that UCLA blog . . .

I meant Billy Joe, not Jose.

Practice would be over. Wonder if there is any updated info on Olson now?

Well of all things, I definitely DO NOT FEEL FOR UCLA. They have talent upon talent in their backyard, and if they can't weather a few injuries then they don't deserve to win anyway. Oh, and not to mention that they have single-handedly destroyed several of our seasons -- most notably 1990 and 1998, but 1999 and 2001 aren't too bad either.

Bob, what's the significance of Davenport "finishing last" in the drills? Was he going last? Was he finishing last like in a race? I know you said he may not have been going full speed, I'm just wondering if maybe he was put out there last as a precautionary measure by the coaches or if he was running slow...

Not much action on the blog comments tonight. Everybody's catching their breath . . . giving their Husky minds a little rest. Yes, it will be a long week so that it understandable.

If Olson is out, how might that affect the game, from both teams' perspectives? It could be an interesting development. UCLA blog says he's having headache issues and Dorrell would not say if he will practice Wednesday.

Yep, Malibu, not too much action. I was catching up on work tonight. My only thoughts about Olsen not playing is one, I hope he has a speedy recovery, no ligering problems, and two, I almost feel bad rooting against the younger Cowan. No matter who is QB, we have to get lots of pressure on him to take pressure off the DBs.
Pretty exciting for you going to the Rose Bowl. I've been there 3 times, UW vs Mich for the Nat. Champ game, (excellent), one NU vs UCLA, (more red than blue in the stands), and one very unfortunate experience: Nu vs Miami.
You have to represent us well! Go Dawgs!
