It's all over but the shouting at Pac-10 media day (not that there was any real shouting other than last night in the hospitality suite but cliches are about all I can conjure up after listening to a steady stream of them all day long).

Anyway, after cleaning out my notebook for a few stories for the paper tomorrow, I found I still had a few leftover, so here they are:

HEMPHILL NOT COMING BACK: Since several of you sent me e-mails about rumors that Chris Hemphill might be returning to the team, I decided to pursue it and called Hemphill today. He said there is nothing to the rumors and that he will head to Central Washington next month to play for the Wildcats this season (UPDATE: reader is right, it's Wildcats not Eagles --- I blame it on jet lag).

Sounds as if the rumors arose because Hemphill is still on campus finishing up some final classes and has been taking part in some of the team's voluntary workouts.

"I've just been working out with the team, doing seven-on-sevens,'' Hemphill said.

Hemphill said former Huskies Charles Smith and Durrell Moss are still planning to also play at Central this season. Central has yet to release an official roster for this season. Hemphill said practice there begins Aug. 15.

TY-SPEAK: Here are a few quick items from some of what Tyrone Willingham had to say today.

Willingham wouldn't talk about any specific possible personnel news saying he wanted to hold off until practice starts Aug. 4, but said there is "nothing major'' that would be coming down the pike. "We're just working through some pending situations with some of our freshmen, that's all,'' he said.

ADD --- I've been assuming you all know who I'm talking about here, but obviously I'm referring to WRs Anthony Boyles and Devin Aguilar. As was widely reported a few weeks ago, each will apparently attempt to take the test again on Sept. 15 and if they pass then, could enroll for the beginning of classes a couple of weeks later and could play in the final nine or so games of the season.

--- Willingham said WR Quintin Daniels, who had been bothered by a slight re-tweaking of his long troublesome knee at the end of spring practice, is "doing fine. He's doing most of the things without a brace, so he seems to be doing good.''

--- Willingham said cornerback remains "a sensitive area'' for the Huskies as practice gets set to begin. "We still don't have the depth there that we need starting camp, that's why some of the freshmen are going to have an opportunity to make a role for themselves and help the team,'' he said.

--- With five running backs coming in, there has been speculation that a couple could change position. But those decisions haven't been made yet. "We'll be looking at those (in camp) but we need running backs, too,'' he said. "They could (switch positions) if they want to do that and that's what's best for the team.''

--- Willingham hinted strongly that a walk-on quarterback or two will be joining the team soon. UW has just three QBs on its current roster after walk-on Chandler Clemons, who was the fourth QB in the spring, left the team. "We may have an addition by the time we get to camp,'' he said. "We may need someone just to hand off.''

--- Willingham said the QB depth chart remains the same, but also heaped praise on Carl Bonnell. "Carl is doing well,'' he said. "I'm very pleased with Carl. This is probably the most excited about Carl that I've ever been. Basically, he's a different person and a different player and that, to me, is exciting.'' But before you start thinking that maybe that means there's a way Bonnell could earn at least a share of some playing time --- as I briefly did --- Willingham said he doesn't like going with two quarterbacks. "I am not a two-QB coach,'' he said. "I like to have (one). I think leadership shouldn't be divided.''

DUCKS LOSE TWO: This had already been out there, but today was the first time I heard Oregon coach Mike Bellotti talk about the fact that the Ducks have lost two of their prime DL recruits --- Myles Wade and Simi Fili --- to grades (here's more on that).

"Those are big hits because those are big bodies,'' Bellotti said of the two players, each listed at better than 300 pounds. "It's going to challenge our depth and experience. However, if you are counting on true freshmen to step in and be the solution you may be a little bit ambitious so right now, it comes down to hte guys we've gone to war with.''
