Arizona gets to work
Posted by Bob Condotta
Another Pac-10 team opening spring workouts is Arizona, and the Wildcats loom as one of the more intriguing stories in the conference this season.
Arizona went 6-6 last season, an upgrade in Mike Stoops' third year in Tucson. But the way the season ended, with a home loss to Arizona State with a bowl berth on the line, was cause for a lot of consternation.
After the team finished near the bottom nationally in many offensive categories, Stoops decided to shake things up on that side of the ball, as this story from the Arizona Daily Star details.
They are calling it the Air Raid offense, and with new offensive coordinator Sonny Dykes coming from Texas Tech, it's sure to look similar to the pass-happy attack employed there in recent years.
Here's another look at that same issue from Anthony Gimino of the Tucson Citizen, tying in the change in offense to the importance of this season to Stoops' future.
To make clear a few things about spring practice, teams can only have 15 no matter when they start, so the fact that some teams are starting earlier than UW doesn't mean they are getting in more work.
As a quarter school, UW traditionally starts in late March to avoid conflicts with spring break. Tyrone Willingham has moved the start back about another week this year, saying he simply wanted to wait until after the Easter weekend. The spring game will be a week later than it has typically been in previous seasons.
