Baggett hiring coming soon
Posted by Bob Condotta
So the guy who posted on here Jan. 23 that he'd heard that Charlie Baggett might be the new receivers coach --- we were able to immediately confirm that night he was in the mix --- will soon be officially proven right.
Baggett is expected to be named as Washington's new receivers coach on Wednesday.
Baggett replaces Eric Yarber, who left for Arizona State in December to work for his old college coach and mentor, Dennis Erickson.
As we pointed out then, the hiring of Baggett seems like a good fit for a number of reasons.
He has extensive NFL experience, something this bio here details.
His resume includes serving as the receivers coach of the Miami Dolphins for the past two years. Baggett lost his job when Nick Saban left for Alabama and Baggett was not retained by new Miami coach Cam Cameron.
Baggett also has 20 years of collegiate coaching experience, including 14 at Michigan State under Saban (95-98) and George Perles (83-92).
As the bio further details, Baggett attended Michigan State the same time as Willingham and the have been close friends ever since. I detailed much of their relationship in this story in the Times last year. Both grew up in North Carolina, and Baggett was the QB for Michigan State who got hurt in 1973, which opened the door for Willingham to take over and start four games.
Among the players Baggett has groomed are Randy Moss, during a stint with the Minnesota Vikings, as well as the likes of Nate Burleson, Antonio Freeman and Muhsin Muhammad.
Baggett will be the only new assistant for the Huskies this year, a continuity that should only help the Huskies continue the improvement of a year ago.
