Tight ends out
Posted by Bob Condotta
The news is in on Washington tight ends Michael Gottlieb and Robert Lewis and it's not good.
UW coach Tyrone Willingham said Tuesday during the Pac-10 media conference that both players will be out this week against Oklahoma and that "their absences could be extended.''
Gottlieb broke a bone in his hand and Lewis suffered a foot injury.
With both players out, sophomore Johnie Kirton will be the starting tight end with redshirt freshman Tim Williams serving as his backup. Williams has yet to play in any games.
Also in the mix is walk-on Tim Harris of Bellarmine High in Tacoma. Harris spent a year at Oregon, redshirting in 2003, before transferring to the College of the Redwoods and then walking-on at UW last spring.
Willingham said the Huskies will evaluate other options, as well, though he didn't elaborate.
The losses are critical as the Huskies like to use a lot of two tight end formations. Now, that means Williams would have to be used to do any two tight end formations.
