Scouting the Spartans

Posted by Bob Condotta

Today it was defensive coordinator Kent Baer's turn to meet the media and discuss this week's opponent.

And while San Jose State may not be a big name in college football circles, Baer knows the Spartans well through his previous jobs at Utah State, Cal and Stanford -- all regular foes of SJS.

"The thing that always comes to my mind about them is that they are really fast,'' Baer said. "They always have great speed at the skill positions. The thing they've added now is a big offensive line, and they are all back except one guy.''

Baer said running back Yonus Davis reminds him of Maurice Drew -- a bad analogy for UW fans who remember the 300-plus yard day Drew had here two years ago -- and also said WR John Broussard is dangerous player.

SJS is likely to play two QBs, one of whom is JC transfer Sean Flynn. Baer said the Huskies got some tape of him at LA Harbor JC where he threw for 20 TDs in eight games last year. Flynn, by the way, is left-handed.

Baer said he expects everyone to be able to play Saturday. DE Greyson Gunheim practiced Tuesday for the first time since his knee injury and Baer said he "looked really good.'' He used the same phrase to describe CB Dashon Goldson, limited with an ankle injury throughout spring.

But he also said that with the temperature expected to be 85 degrees that there will be a lot of rotating at every spot.

He also said Donny Mateaki would be the likely starter at one DT spot. Mateaki is officially listed as an either/or starter along with Jordan Reffett. But both should see significant time.

And asked about true freshman, Baer said the most likely to play is linebacker Donald Butler, who is also on many special teams. He said it is uncertain whether any others will play Saturday.
