First practice over
Posted by Bob Condotta
The Huskies just walked off the field about 6:10 p.m. after their first practice of this season -- and the only practice this season scheduled to be open to the media.
As such, we were able to talk with Tyrone Willingham afterward, and also -- obviously -- watch practice.
Willingham said what you'd expect -- there were some good things but it could have been better; he's generally happy with the conditioning but time will tell, etc. In essence, nothing too earth shattering.
Here are a few other notes and impressions:
--For the most part, the depth chart looked as expected. One notable change in the starting lineup has Dan Howell ahead of senior Scott White at the strongside linebacker position.
-- The starting offensive line looked the same as the depth chart given here earlier. The backup left tackles, however, were Morgan Rosborough and Cody Habben, meaning the top three left tackles were two redshirt freshmen (Ben Ossai is the starter) and a true freshman. JC transfer Aaron Mason will get his first look there once/if he becomes eligible.
-- The first pass Jake Locker threw in the 11-on-11 drill that ended the day was a completion to Quintin Daniels. Willingham smiled and said "not bad'' in talking about the play.
-- One true freshman who has apparently already made an impression is receiver D'Andre Goodwin of Lancaster, Calif. Word is he clicked with Isaiah Stanback during summer workouts and he made a couple of nice catches during the practice.
-- Marcel Reece is definitely big. Quipped one observer "Who's that offensive lineman catching passes?'' He's listed at 240 but may be a bit heftier than that. Willingham said his weight is not a concern now, but could be down the road.
-- Kenny James took part in everything and even caught a pass during an early drill, which Willingham noted is the kind of thing you might not expect given his wrist injury. All insist it's no big deal and early impressions are that it may not be.
-- Jason Wells ran as the starting strong safety with Ashlee Palmer still sidelined due to academic issues. With Dashon Goldson out, the starting corners were Roy Lewis and Matt Fountaine.
