Reprieve for Seattle Public Library users

Posted by Joni Balter

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels released his 2009 revised budget Friday and made the right call regarding library hours.
The challenge for the mayor was a $43 million budget hole. The legitimate concern surrounded library hours that might be reduced in an uneven and unpredictable manner from library to library. That approach has been tried before and often creates confusion among library users.
See our Friday editorial.
Late in the game, the mayor found a way to avoid cutting regular hours. Still library users and employees will see libraries shuttered the last week of August. This is the least painful way to cut the library portion of the city budget; few departments were spared.
Since library cuts are reductions people feel, a hurrah for finding a way not to confuse people who need libraries more during an economic downturn to find jobs..
