Global warming - no, really

Posted by Lance Dickie

After shoveling three inches of partly cloudy out of the driveway, I was hoping Mother Nature would be woman enough to apologize. Nothing so far.
I am curious how much of this early winter snow will stay in the mountains to feed creeks and rivers next spring and summer. This is one of the conundrums of climate change.

Snow is falling, that is not the problem. Earlier snow melts and runoff are the issue. A deep snowpack has served as our natural reservoir, but the snow is not staying in the mountains as long. The water is disappearing before it can be used for fish, irrigation, drinking and power generation. Dams and reservoirs can only hold back so much, and they have to make room for spring flood control. Water storage is a topic that will get more and more attention.

Old patterns have changed, and old practices will have to adapt.
