Public safety and taxation

Posted by Lance Dickie

Raising taxes is a delicate subject for any elected official. The Snohomish County Council made the always tough vote to increase revenues to provide and improve access to services for the mentally ill and drug and alcohol abusers. My Friday column looks at the decision to raise the sales tax by one-tenth of a cent to support options with direct links to public safety and the cost of jail and police operations.

For an interesting essay on public finances and the core functions of government, check out a policy paper published by the Washington Policy Center. The authors were Paul Guppy, vice president for research, and Jason Mercier, director of the Center for Government Reform.
