Foreign aid = strong defense

Sen. Barack Obama believes foreign aid should be the top priority for the U.S. The Democratic candidate wants to double the foreign aid budget to $50 billion by 2012. I agree.
If used strategically, investing in other countries through development or humanitarian aid is our best investment for strong security. John McCain has said he sees aid as a key factor in America's defense and as a way to eliminate poverty. The debate is broader than the two presidential candidates, it encompasses Congress where foreign aid reform is gaining momentum and among nations who depend on our aid.
